Toni Nadal: It will be my last season with Rafael Nadal on the tour

enlightenment

Semi-Pro
After 11 years without any change in his team, it´s revolution time for Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard player, who added Carlos Moya in his team two months ago, won´t work with his uncle Toni anymore. It was Toni himself to reveal it in an exclusive interview to Il Tennis Italiano. ´By next year I won´t follow Rafael on the Tour anymore, but I will work only in our academy. I want to take care of the formation of young talents, which is the most important moment in a tennis player´s growth. The relationship with my nephew has always been good, over all these years we never had any to argue about. But until he was 17 I decided everything, then the agent Carlos Costa came, his father got closer and everybody had his own opinion. And the truth is that every year I decide even less, until the point that I won´t decide anything anymore! I travelled with Rafa for many years, now I want to deal with the training of the young people and our academy is the ideal place.´

Toni also added that Francisco Roig andMoya should remain in his team, 'unless Rafa will add some other.'

Interviewed by L'Equipe to Toni spoke about the Australian Open final lost to Roger Federer 6/3 in the fifth set. Toni was aware it wouldn't have been an easy match since the beginning of the tournament.'When I watched his matches against Berdych, Nishikori, and Wawrinka, I told myself countering him would be very complicated. And really, he went at us very quickly and resisting his game was difficult. It's also true that his backhand was incredible at the end of the tournament. I see two reasons for that. Fist of all, Federer experienced a very inspiring week: he missed a lot less than normal, and he stuck firmly to his decision to hit the ball flatter. And then, I don't know if the surface was as fast as many have said, but playing at night favoured Federer, because the ball doesn't bounce as high and it was easier for him to anticipate. Extreme top spin just wasn't possible. But in any case, on the whole, his level was very high.'

And what about Rafael Nadal's level? 'Rafael recovered his game. He had a good tournament, he had a good attitude, and played matches that were not bad against Dimitrov, Monfils and Raonic. I think really Rafael was very close to his top level, both mentally and game-wise.'

Was it the best Nadal we've seen in the last three seasons? 'It doesn't seem so simple to me. Don't forget, Rafael went into Roland Garros last year feeling excellent. There was just this little niggle [left wrist] that was bothering us, and which forced us to withdraw after two rounds and then ruined the end of the season.'

How does he explain that he's rediscovered his best tennis at the beginning of this season? 'For the first time in a very, very long while, Rafael has no physical worries to manage. As soon as we started preparing for the 2017 season, in November in Manacor, his feelings hitting were very good. Peace of mind counts for so much!

Toni added: 'Rafael has been stressed for several years because of his physical problems. At some point, you can't deliver with everything you have on the court, you can't have the ideal attitude in training, you lose self-confidence too much. When your shots depend on the state of your hand, your knee, your foot, at some point having to manage all those pains tires you out. They sap your strength. It's the head above all. It determines everything, it allows you to develop your game. If it's not ticking properly up there, everything becomes very difficult. And suddenly, as soon as Rafael could play without pain, he quickly recovered a good level. And what's more, we were reinforced by the addition of Carlos Moya, who also was a real plus.'

He decided to leave and immediately Nadal reached AO final. It would be a great year for Nadal once he departs officially.

Needs to be confirmed by reliable sources.

People do not realize that for such players reaching a final is not a good result. It's winning or losing, nothing more. Don't remember any Djokovic fans being happy about him reaching USO or WTF finals, because he lost them.

You don't realize that Rafa wasn't supposed to reach the 2017 AO final due to his long-standing left wrist injury last year (since spring).

Nothing stops him from continuing to give input to Rafa while they're at the Academy. But it's surprising nevertheless. How old is uncle Toni? Maybe he's also getting tired from all the travel.

He will turn 56 on the 21st of this month. His insistence that relations with Rafa have always been excellent and that they have never had any serious disagreements etc. etc. seems somewhat contradicted by his comment that he was being pushed more and more out of the decision-making. That really surprised me because I felt and assumed that he was always the paramount decision-maker on the team. Who could have been pushing him away from this role other than Rafa? Maybe his nephew has finally decided to grow a pair and make some decisions for himself and seek advice elsewhere. Never thought I would see that day!

Whatever else can be said, Rafa won 14 Slams and 55 other titles under Uncle Toni's guidance. That has to be THE candidate for greatest coaching relationship of all time. Will Rafa be able to cope without him?

Thanks! 56 is still young but not that young to travel around the world so much. And if Rafa has really distanced himself (even a tiny bit) then maybe uncle Toni has indeed decided he'd be feeling more rewarded working at the Academy and probably helping mint the next Rafa. I doubt the two will ever have a real break-up :)

The thought did just occur to me that maybe this is a crafty manoeuvre on Toni's part to bring Rafa to heel and panic him into submission. We have yet to hear from Rafa about this. I hope he sticks to his guns!

It's just struck me that it was Toni who made this announcement and not Rafa. Isn't it normally the players themselves who make the announcements about their coaching changes? How typical of Toni to ignore the normal protocol. Calling the shots to the very last or just putting pressure on Rafa?

For three years federer fans have been hailing his repeated final losses to djokovic at wimbledon and uso as his great achievements!!

And Federer was happy with his results whether he won or not because he said he expected not to be that far. Of course they both wanted to win and either one who lost was going to be devastated after getting to that point. Anyone would be and it's stupid to imply otherwise.

It's not about the travel or his age. For years he rarely has went to anything under a masters 1000 and he doesn't go to a lot of masters 1000s. It seems a convenient time for him to leave for himself as Rafa isn't likely to win another slam other than maybe this years french.

Yes, reaching finals consistently during the "way past your prime" period is a great achievement. Did you hear anyone say it was not?

This is surprising if it is true. Given that Rafa has I would say 2 years tops in his career, I would have expected Toni to stand by Rafa til his last swing of the racket.
