Toni Nadal: "Man coaches are too servile with the players"

Toni Nadal: "Many coaches are too servile with the players"

'Without wishing to criticize, I see there are coaches who are too servile to the players. I see they run to hand them the water bottle or run to string their racket . That is not the case with me".

'I see what some players answer to their coaches and I can't believe it. With Rafa, the relationship is well defined. I'm the uncle but on the court I'm the coach and I make the difference clear. That relationship was always clear. And the secret is I am passionate about his success".

“(Nadal) is a correct and well brought up kid, very obediente, who let himself be guided. Intensity is Rafa’s salient feature. It isn’t that he trains more, but he does do it with more intensity. To me, that is key to his level”.

“The mind is fundamental in tennis, because mistakes are punished. In football, you miss three passes and the score a goal and you can be the best player of the match. I taught Rafa that it isn’t like that in tennis, because you do pay (for mistakes)”.

“The mind is trained too, not only the body. Since he was a kid, I never allowed him any dejection gestures”.

“Anyone who thinks himself special is not right in the head”.

“My nephew plays well at tennis, but he doesn’t think he’s a special being or superior to others. He’s polite and has his feet on the ground. Rafa suffered a lot when his parents separated, he suffers if he has an argument with his girlfriend, like anyone else”.

About Argentinian players “Del Potro has huge potencial. An injury cut the good streak he has in 2010, but he’s a complete player and I highlight his serve and his forehand”.

About Juan Mónaco, one of the “two or three best friends” of Nadal in the circuit “he improved a lot this year, though he lacks ‘punch’ is key moments. Rafa is very hapy about the moment Pico is going through”.

David Nalbandián “is of the tennis players with most class in the whole circuit. His return is incredible and it’s a pleasure to watch him play, because of how complete he is”.

Players tend to be capricious employers, but you can't always sack a relative nor treat them as hired help.

I liked unkle Toni's synopsis of Nalbandián:

“is of the tennis players with most class in the whole circuit. His return is incredible and it’s a pleasure to watch him play, because of how complete he is”

It's true Nalbandian is solid, from the ground up. If it weren't for several unfortunate injuries throughout his career... who knows, maybe hall of fame?

Nalbandian failed even before the injuries. Injuries didn't keep him from winning. His mind and lack of motivation did him in.

With his coaching style, I thought it might be the player that becomes too servile…if he thinks that is possible.

If Federer had the mindset of Rafa he'd have won more than 7 Wimbledons in his 14 attempts. Federer would have been headed for the greatness of Rafa, as Rafa has won 7 of 8 Roland Garros titles and is on the way to something unbelievable in 5 years time.

Just about any other sport in the world the coach is king and everyone knows it.

Tennis is unique in this regard and it is a function of the lesser importance of national prestige in our sport.

Uncle Toni has a good point. Hard to yell at somebody who writes you the paycheck, and can kick you out of the door the minute you yell at him. Tricky relationship. Uncle Toni has one more advantage. Uncle.

Care to wipe the brown off your nose..."Fed headed for Rafa's greatness?" ROFL...again ROFL...still ROFL

What a great uncle. Other tennis and football players would be lucky to have an uncle like that.

Men do tend to be more servile in certain situations.
I think this might have to do with the fact women are naturally better nurturers and often times have more experience teaching after raising a kid.
Often times the child will missbehave and require scolding.

Then they take that nurturing teaching skill and apply it to the player they are coaching. When their player slacks off in practicing they utilize that no nonsense mothering skill and can scold the player like they would a misbehaving child.

Seriously now, imagine one of those chinese dragon mothers coaching a player.

Yes Fed should have won Wimbledon from 2001-2012 with only that 2008 loss. He should have won 11/12 Wimbledons for RAFA-like greatness.

Not really if Federer had Rafa's mindset he'd be a different Fed, camped behind the baseline, trying to wear down his opponents instead of attacking. I know what you mean though, if Fed had the same intensity. Perhaps. But you can always play the armchair role and say oh if you had so and so's touch and his agility and his mental strength then HE'D HAVE 10 MORE SLAMS or whatever. It's just talk and doesn't really mean anything (no offense).

You can't compare a guy with 7 wins from 14 attempts to a guy with 7 wins from 8 attempts. Completely different levels, not even close. Not to mention the guy with 7 wins from 8 attempts only dropped ONE set this year. This is only the beginning.

Let's not go there. It will only prompt someone to post Rafa's WTF attempts and titles.

So how many WTF titles did Rafa win ?

So if you're only playing the best players, it doesn't count? I'm not sure I understand that logic.

The same number of Singles Gold Medals Federer won (and Federer has been to 3 Olympics and was seeded NUMBER ONE in all 3). BTW, the Olympic final is best-of-5 sets.....unlike the World Tour Finals final.

Stanislav is a solid German player. He could probably pair up with Brad Baughman and win the Olympic doubles gold.

WTF used to be best out of 5 up until 2007 Rafa couldn't win it then either. Also since its best of 3 it should be easier :) just shows Rafa can't win against the top eight together LOLOL
