Toni says Nadal will pass Fed in GS tally

"I will not coach Nadal any more".

"Federer is the greatest of all time/better than Nadal".

"Nadal has utmost respect for Federer".

"I will not be actively involved with Nadal's career any more".

"Winning at any price was never important".

Just a couple of uncle Phony's many statements.

Oh, and, as though even if that come to pass anything will change about who Federer and who Nadal really is.

I don't care what those pros say, they just want to get rid of the press and are board of goat questions, they don't care, it shows.

Anyway, if Rafa ends up with the slam count, I can't wait to see how this forum will explode.

After all this brilliance and consistency and avoiding injuries and longevity Fed ending up without the slam count. That would be quite a blow for his fans.

Ahh..Now New User shows his true face. No what they are tired of is Federer.....being in front of his nephew. Also it’s bored.

You are wrong.

Federer will remain with his brilliant career and Nadal will remain the ATG, who is involved in the GOAT discussion thanks only to his clay prowess (as there isn't anything outside of it, that is "best").

8-)

What do you mean true face, I'm a huge Fed fan, but I don't particularly like a lot of his fans that much.

It would be cool to see how they explode.

With Rafa it's the opposite. I like his fans, but really don't like the guy.

Well his nephew is reasonably close in slam count, there are no young prospects in sight (certainly not on clay, what is new) and Fed is bound to lose steam and stop defying age at some point so I wouldn't say it's outlandish.

That said, Fed will remain the better player for me regardless of the slam count.

If Rafa breaks the record, some of them will be away from clay and he will add weeks nr.1 and masters too. He will add other records too.

Also, I don't see how it's bad if you win too many FOs. So, if Rafa only had 3 FO titles, he would seem more well rounded?

Sorry to tell you but Nadal will get a lot more popularity vote if he gets the slam record. Even a lot of Fed fans will jump the boat.

Come on, you really think that Rafa with 20 majors and the slam record will just be another ATG?

You totally misunderstood.

Unless Nadal wins another 3 US Opens he will never be considered better than Federer anywhere except on clay.

He can round his resume as much as he likes.

Exactly, Fedal won't be happening again and again, Young guns are waiting too

Can you point me to some of them? The only reason we are hearing comments like these is because there are no promising young guns.

Isn't it funny how everything still revolves around the same guys? The Djokovic fans are optimistic he'll reign again because no young challengers. Uncle Toni thinks Nadal will break the slam record because no young challengers. It's mind boggling!

I don't think distribution matters much after you won career slam and made multiple GS finals everywhere. Also in this homogenization era, distribution is less relevant. Agassi at least has an impressive career slam.

On paper 5AO+5USO = 10FO.

BUT, competition is my main argument why Fed should be considered greater. Clay and grass hardly have any competition. But the field on HC is INSANE.

Of course competition will be tougher if 75% of tennis is played on HC.

So, yeah for this reason alone I think Fed has higher quality titles.

Also grass due to the fast nature has tougher competition too. Because the margin between top guys is not so large, a few mistakes and you can lose the match. There is no way on clay that you can lose to inferior player, so top guys have advantage on clay.

I am not talking about distribution.

I am talking about titles and level of play.

That’s because the young guns are an afterthought for some posters unless they need one of these young guns to stop a rival.

Yeah so far it has been disappointing, but at some point soon they will start taking over .

All it is going to take is for Djokovic to snap back into gear, and then watch how everyone changes their tune.
So true. 1.5 year ago people would laugh if you said Djoker wouldnt surpass Rafa, and most people thought Fedal were done winning slams (me included). Now people think Rafa will win 20. I never stop getting surprised how fast things change in tennis.

For 2017 to happen the stars had to allign for Fedal, that wont happen again.

Nadal is uninjured, folks.

You knew this. However, it is most curious. Am I imagining things or did a chronic knee injury force convenient withdrawal from late season tourneys? Does no one remember?

The giveaway is another thread claiming how Nadal should come out after the clay season and “say wow this was easy”. Because we all know how Nadal fans feel about clay and they can’t brag about Nadal on any other surface.
You are right, a fan is a strong word. I prefer his style. I'm not into hero worship, it has always been strange to me. Ok, so those guys can hit a ball , big deal.

I would school them at table tennis and I'm a newb there. Talking about skills, they should try table tennis. You don't have time to react and you have very small rackets.

And you can't just grind at table tennis or win with fitness. You can only win with skills there.

Nadal is injured? That is brand new information!!!

Yeah, I have a deal with Nadal fans. By default I always assume Rafa is injured, unless stated otherwise.

But let me tell you this. Even healthy Nadal can't beat Chuck Norris on clay.

This has been going on for more than ten years, but the top of it was last year when Rafito appeared in the final with his knee taped.

The tape was not seen before or after this in any other near matches.

That development is rivaled only by his sabbaticals due to family problems ( are they also no more? I don’t follow as closely as I perhaps should for the full experience, lol).

True.

Federer plays for his love of the sport.

Nadal plays for his (and his uncle's) love of besting Federer.

Don't get cocky. There are plenty of tennis players who are better at table tennis than you might expect.

That's only because there wasn't any quality opposition. Let him go against peak Nicholson, Streep, Deniro, Brando. No way he wins it.

That is an idea.

Maybe if the Nadal is a few Majors short he can get them by competing in the WTA.

Or just make a tournament at his academy, call it Major tournament Del acdemia Rafa Nadal and invite a couple of his donors (pardon me, students) as a competition.

It would still be a Major for the vamosalaplayans, no?

Still plays a lot of ping pong. Probably bad a** too
Bye the way :). Do you remember Chandler from Friends playing table tennis on Ellen vs some Asian Olympic player?

He looked quite good for a ping pong newbie. The thing is he was also a top junior player and you can see his technique there. People should check out the clip. It was also funny how he used tennis technique for his shots, was so funny.

He says “I trust he will endure enough to break Federer's record of 19 Grand Slams."

What he's really assuming (and hoping for) is that Roger will stay at 19 slams. They hoped he would stay at 17 and look how that worked out.

Good luck to the Nadals. They should be worrying about Djokovic catching up to Nadal's 16 while Roger goes on to 22. Yes, I said it - Roger will win at least 3 more slams.

The stutter steps are fine, but the quick shift of weight and the compact strokes are influenced by my normal tennis habits.

I am no Federer, though.

Im thinking Federer whoops me bad and I'm pretty good at ping pong.

I don't remember that episod. Didn't know he was a top junior player. I learned something today :).
