Toni: When Nadal is fit, he's battling physical struggles from prior injuries

Hmm. If Rafa's foot issue is a farce in your eyes, let me ask: isn't it a farce that someone who has reportedly had a chronic back problem since at least 2003, has run like a rabbit all his career and won 20 GS titles ?

Ask, and you shall receive answers.

Federer has never claimed that he has played his whole career through pain that left him "struggling even when fit", has never whined left and right about his back issues hampering his career severely, has never claimed that his back issue "might have" put a stop on his career, nor has he tried various tactics to use the said problem in various ways to "demonstrate" how much he has to fight that problem (the knee band in the Shanghai 2017 final is still fresh in the memory).

Couple that with Tio's current statements that completely contradict his statements from several years ago, when he declared Nadal pain and knee problem-free, and you get the difference.

Now, since you are here, let me also ask you something: do you remember Toni Nadal or Rafael Nadal announcing that Rafael Nadal's knee problem is alleviated, and he is pain free?

8-)

When is the Nadal going to openly blame Tio for ruining his talent?

That is the main problem that was ever presented, and something that is (thinly) veiled by the success the Nadal has as a tennis player.

That is the hard question that Nadal should write about.

Rafa has openly laughed at people who are bashing him & his uncle like you are doing.

Fed & his fans have always whined about his back issues.

How come he always retires when he is losing?
He always retires when he's losing (as in every time he's losing, he retires) or he only retires when he's losing (meaning that if he's leading, he'll never retire.

First of all, are you second-guessing the motives of the man considered the fiercest competitor in the game?
Secondly, I'm not looking at his, or anyone else's, record, but don't you think the great majority of retirements are by the player who is trailing?

Uncle Toni is a funny character.

When I read between the lines anytime Uncle Toni was brought up in Rafa's book, I've always had the sense that Nadal secretly blames him for how hard he pushes Rafa in training sessions for his injuries.

For Rafa to do that he'd actually have to grow a backbone

Don't you guys get tired of posting the same posts over and over again? The obsession with anything related to Nadal's injuries is so repetitive. It's like "hey an article about Nadal's injuries, better make sure to comment that they're all overexaggerated and fake." How can you guys be so lacking in empathy?? I would not like to see what you all say about people with mental illness. And jesus the amount of manufactured outrage that goes on here is mind-numbingly dull. Bleh...

Welcome back Duck!

All he's saying is that Rafa has a congenital issue with his foot that affects his knees and he has to live with it.
Exactly, Ann. I had migraine headaches for 45 years. They stopped suddenly when I stopped caffeine in 2013. Because of all those years of pain I can stand pain that most other people can't handle. I broke my skapula two weeks and two days ago (shoulder blade), right side, ended up in an ER getting X-rays. They gave me a morphine tablet and two percocets, then sent him home with a script for more percocets. For those who don't know, percocets are oxycodone with ibruprofen, and oxycodone is behind uncontrolled substance abuse. They told me to do nothing for 6-8 weeks, use a sling, stay immobile. I'm back to typing, back to playing the piano in just over two weeks and started running again last night, been walking at least a couple miles for a full week.

You can do a lot with just plain determination and will power.

I'm not saying that Nadal's problems are not exaggerated, but I give him credit for hanging in there, and I'd wager he can take pain that would defeat most people - and perhaps this is true of all great athletes.

I never filled the percocet prescription, and I've only been taking minimum anti-inflamatories to speed up healing.

How did you just stop caffeine ? Don't you have any kind of withdrawal symptoms, like heavy headedness, or lethargy ?

I once tried giving up the one cup of coffee I have in the morning. For six months felt awful, and then had to come back to it. I still have only one cup, wish i could drop it.

My blood pressure went up after I stopped a prescription pill, Trazadone, to manage the migraines, because it was interfering with my sleep. That's when the BP went up, and no one knows why.

So I was looking for solutions. I had a dull headache, not a migraine for maybe 10 days, pushed through, then I've never had another one. It's easy to stop something when you have horrible pain using it and none when you stop. It's about as hard a decision as deciding to stop dropping a hammer on your foot once a day.

If stopping cigarettes stopped weekly migraines, pretty soon no one would smoke. Bad pain is a huge motivator for change.

Never left.

I wonder if Rafa sent him home to Majorca because he has early stage Alzheimer's? I don't think he's lying. I think he's being too honest. He almost makes Rafa sound like a, pardon the expression, "victim of the opioid epidemic". And, Rafa, stop lifting, dude. You don't need the extra muscle. I love the way you fill out your muscle-shirts, but I'm willing to forego those beautiful biceps for a few more years of your GOAT-hood.

Toni is so obviously exaggerating the extent of the problem and just how much pain Rafa went through. Having serious chronic pains in your knees and back practically all the time for more than 10 years would make anyone absolutely miserable. Rafa is a very cheerful guy, he clearly enjoys playing a lot and in the majority of matches in his career, he didn't show any signs of feeling pain.

Still, I understand it was really difficult for him to deal with his condition on top of injuries. Ad I believe that he might've expressed the wish to have less pain even if it meant he wouldn't achieve as much.
Yes, hence, the "painkillers". For a minority like me, they make you feel like you're coming down with the flu, but that's better than a sharp pain that doesn't go away for days. For most, there's that euphoria... especially if you drink with them. ;^)B

your judgement literally sucks on everything!

More fake news. Where is the Federer press release about this matter?

Your post is proof that fake news are coming from you.

Here is one of many articles about his press-conferences:

¤¤ Roger Federer has given a detailed description of the back injuries he suffered last year...
Federer said it first happened at last year's Indian Wells tournament, in the second round, on a second serve. Despite repeated back problems in the past, he described this one as lasting longer than any previous injury...
"It did go away three weeks later, probably, when I was home," he said. "Just kept on lingering, lingering, lingering, and then eventually it went away. ...
Federer returned mostly pain-free in Madrid after a seven-week break last spring, but had mixed results. ...
"And then I got hurt again," he said. "That's when things really went became difficult, because I think the second time I got hurt I had like a back spasm in Hamburg. I should have pulled out of the event."
The problem began during the event when Federer was playing soccer to warm up, though he felt that may have only been a trigger....[And so on]¤¤

Doctor: "You have a chronic injury with chronic pain."
Nadal: "If I add just another 10 RGs running around like a jack rabbit, would that be too obvious?"

Fed devotee, you have to replace Rafa's name with Fed's name and '10 RGs' with '20 GSs'.

So, you confirm that his chronic (reportedly) back issue is a farce.

The difference is that Federer doesn't always have it lined up as an excuse for losing. He doesn't mention it very often, hardly ever takes an MTO, and doesn't retire from matches. You don't hear about it all season every season for 13 years. It's not the same. When he has an issue with the back, you can guarantee it's legit. With Rafa who the hell knows half the time???? Sometimes it's real and sometimes it's just convenient.

Hater spotted.

I hold Rafa responsible for creating his own injuries through a robotic style of play: but the reality of those injuries cannot be doubted.

When he does retire it's through legit injury indeed. No doubt whatsoever about that.

And contrary to some (cough-Fedr-cough) he will never strategically tank a match or forfeit in advance a final because he doesn't think he can win vs another player.

Of course his injuries are legit because he's always injured

lol. somehow, somewhere I just knew that this thread would turn out to another 'my daddy's pee pee is bigger than yours daddy's wee wee' ... some 'fans' just never learn. But, but h2h, but more majors, but no WTF, but no gold ... but ballet is more artistic than bulls fighting ... give us goats, give us cows.

Let me know who won this one. Nole fans where are you? Aren't you going to 'spice up' this lovely thread and b!tch about something :)?

It’s a side note and a little off topic but...

This thread brings to mind something from a few years ago. Serena destroyed some kid who had dared to win the 1st set, commentators went wild claiming that she had flu and that it was a superhuman performance. This type of thing really grinds my gears.

Top athlete or not, flu makes you bed ridden. She had a cold. Clearly. Yet because she made a fuss of it with her body language (shoulders slumped, the lot) before slamming down huge serve after huge serve, she was held up to be superhuman.

They’re all human. They get injured and ill. That’s life. Toni needs to stop going on...

Too bad my migraines are biological. My Grandmother is 89 years of age, has never smoked, has eaten cleanly and still suffered from bad bouts of migraines. My Dad who is a health nut has had them throughout his life too although he is a smoker..

I began to have them at age 16. At that time they were horrible, arguably the worst pain I've ever experienced even to this day. But with time they don't occur as often and when they do, they aren't anywhere near as severe. As a teenager I'd have to sleep off my migraines. Now I'm in my mid twenties they are just a minor annoyance throughout the day.

Then again I did read that they pick up again in your 30s. If so I haven't got much to look forward to.

I'm the same way with caffeine.. but it's cola that has done it to me. Every day I have to drink at least a couple of glasses of cola or I get bad headaches and feel sluggish...

I too wish I could drop it. The best I've done so far is switch from full sugar cola over to no sugar. I still get the caffeine hit I need and don't have the huge influx of sugar that accompanies it.

I have almost always seen Fed devotees' comments about Fed's health issues when I have read posts on TTW.

When he [Fed] has an issue with the back, you can guarantee it's legit. With Rafa who the hell knows half the time???? Sometimes it's real and sometimes it's just convenient.

Fed devotee, don't try to cheat readers by constructing fictional stories about Rafa!

Hmm. Toni talked 7 months ago (at a conference in Spain), but some people can't stop making a fuss about it on TTW!
