Tony Nadal: "Paris public has is very stupid"

The French hate Nadal.....they literally booed hiom off the court.
.

Really? Where did you get this "factoid" from? The last 4 years when the finals were played, it seems strange to me that there were no French people in the stands. Surely the French must have boycotted the finals the last 4 years because there was too much applause and cheering. Did the Spanish Armada come to France en masse, buy all the available seats, and push the French out? Even last year, when Federer was beaten into total and complete submission, there was lots of applause and celebration when Nads won.

It must have hurt pulling this one out of your arse.

Historically.............

It's part of the FO history that they have always, and I mean always cheered for the underdog. How many years have Rafa and Uncle T been on tour??? They know that and have been through it before, so I think that this was just sour grapes for Uncle T. Raf has been sending signals (in little comments) all year that he was not all that confident and when really pressed, he cracked; it happens to everyone. Won't be the last time for Raf either, more pressure to come with other players now feeling Raf is beatable.

and why not? do they HAVE to support Nadal or any other player? why? they are people with paid ticket to a show, that is all. they can support whatever and whomever they want

I expected the French to show a bit more enthusiasm for Nadal in the Soderling match but most of the support seemed to be for Soderling. I think they went with the prospect of supporting the underdog.
But, Yes you expect a bit more support for the defending champion.

I think after watching the match today with Federer (he was booed for a stupid line call discussion) it is not ALL the french crowd but rather a minority who are just there to cause trouble. It sounds like everyone in the stands but it isn't. I'm sure many of the people are just there to enjoy a good match

The french crowd was very rude I think when they cheered on Nadal's errors. They didn't boo him but they came very close to it. A 4 times champion deserves more respect than that. I don't know why they behaved the way they did. Maybe they wanted change or maybe they wanted the biggest threat to french player's chances out of the tournament. I can't really figure it out but french are a strange bunch.
The northern french are quite snobby unlike the southerners which is the case with the whole of Europe I think. Northern europeans are generally more snobby and have bad attitude compared to sourthern europeans like greeks, spanish and Italians who are simple people, more chilled out. Southern Europeans are more louder and have less manners but are more honest and frank. The northern europeans have this fake sense of respect and politeness.
I am British and I just call it like it is. This is not bashing but just an honest observation.

this is true.I've had some misunderstanding with Polish friends because of this. They thought my gesturing was..invading their personal space.:-|

I was actually quite amused to be called "stupid" by Rafael Nadal's coach - although not actually French I was part of the Parisian crowd at Chatrier (and cheering for Soderling) so I guess his label applies to me too.

I'm glad that most people in this thread agree that the Nadal camp has basically nothing to complain about. The only time Nadal was kind of booed/whistled was during some line call challenges, but seriously that seems to happen with virtually any non-French player at Roland Garros so big deal. On the whole the crowd gave more than enough support to Nadal, for a start I would say maybe 25-30% of the people that I could hear yelling out were encouraging Nadal, and for any great shot of Nadal the entire crowd, myself included, gave roars of approval, so there is absolutely no cause for complaint. There's no reason why Nadal "should" have gotten more support based on who he is, it's up to the spectators to decide. Also, it has very little to do with him being Spanish - far more with the people's desire to see a historic moment, which they are entitled to hope for as paying spectators.

I doubt many of the people here making the biggest complaints even saw the full match on TV, let alone actually attended the match at the stadium.

The french love the underdog. Nadal is no where near the underdog when it comes to the FO.

and they love federer more than the underdogs. we found that out at the final. soderling h2h record against federer was 0-9, yet the french fans cheered wildly for federer, even after he had destroyed soderling 6-1 in the first set :)

I think we agree that the French are almost always for the underdog and I think they were very impressed with Soderling and his accomplishments reaching the final, proving that his win over Rafa was no fluke. However, I think the French were more interested in seeing history being made in this case.

Its because the french crowd wanted to root for the underdog. Nadal has won this event 4 straight times and many frenchmen wanted to see someone else win for a change. Im sure they were excited when roger won.

I have some news for you: EVERYONE in the world is a Federer fan. He is loved all over the world and wins the fan favorite award every year which Nadal has NEVER won.

yep and thats y im not a federer fan. i dont have a problem with him and think hes a great tennis player and a good person. however, hes always tried to be everybodys darling. the media, the fans, etc etc. no personality whatsoever. or maybe hes good at hiding it untill he feels like crying. and he plays along all the time sucking up to the elitists in tennis and rarely speaks his mind.

nadal is a different type of person. hes not elitist. he doesnt care what people think about his style. he doesnt try hard to portray himself as the most classy guy out there like federer does. and lets face it. his pragmatic style whooped federers pseudo aesthetic $%^$. and trust me u wont see nadal in a silly white suit at this years wimbledon because he is down to earth.

oh and dont forget! federer speaks french!!
and the french are obsessed with their language and their culture. they would cheer for every international player who speaks french to them. just silly
