Well, the US Open has played on 3 different surfaces, so there isn't much of continuity as there is in Wimbledon. However, Sampras and Federer have 5 each on hard courts, and Connors has 5 from 3 different surfaces. I'll give the edge to Fed, -- 5 consecutive wins and 100% wins in finals.

1) Federer
2) Sampras (Won in 3 different decades, and as a teen, twenties,
and thirties)
3) Connors

1. Sampras
2. Tilden/Federer (Tie)
4. Connors
5. Lendl

Yes Sampras. The best to ever play in Flushing. When he didn't didn't win it was something outside of his game, see injuries (Yzaga 1994, Rafter 1998, and DNP in 1999). While numerous people (see Borg and Edber for eg.) hated night night matches, Pete was the best to ever play under the lights. 20-0. enough said!!!!

Put them all at their best and I can't see anyone above him.

Women.
1. Wills Moody
2. Evert/Graf (Tie)
4. Court
5. Navratilova

any one of connors, tilden, federer, lendl, sampras would be a decent choice.
mcenroe won 4 titles compared to lendls 3 but ivan made 8 straight finals so for me his consistency places him ahead of mac.

Glad to see Tilden at #1. I would continue to rank Connors second - narrowly ahead of Federer - narrowly ahead of Sampras. McEnroe/Lendl could go either way... Hard to rank a guy like Larned, but no doubt he was one of the very best.
