Only 2 former world number 1s did not have among the best seasons in this list. They were number 1 in 52 week rolling period but did not have 1 strong year from start to finish.

1. Pat Rafter just missed
2. Carlos Moya missed by a lot

Lowest ever rank for the people in this list

Ferrer 3
Wawrinka 3
Gottfried 3
Okker 3
Zverev 2
Stich 2
Chang 2
Roche 2
Ashe 2
Stan Smith 2

Zverev made it though. Shocking.
Yes because while Olympics that year did not give points, its still big title.

Thiem missed 2020 where he won 1 slam and made 2 big finals but that season was abbreviated. With proper clay season , maybe he would have in 2020.

How many zero-slam performances are among these 170 "best" seasons? Just glancing quickly at the list, it's obvious that there are quite a few (e.g., Gottfried, Rios, Chang, Ferrer, Roddick 2004, Medvedev 2023, Zverev, etc.) Even the big guns have some, such as Connors 1975.

Yes a lot. Meanwhile many 1 slam seasons are not there. Cilic delpo thiem from last 20 years didn't make it.

Alcaraz ends the year with just 37 GOAT points as per UTS. This is very underwhelming year which barely tops inside top 100 best seasons of the open era.
His performances apart from 2 slams and IW were abysmal. No semis of masters, 3 QF and bunch of early losses. No other 500 win or 250 win. A silver in Olympics.

Didn't end the year inside even top 2, and Zverev who has not won any slam ends year much ahead of him.

He can only add a pt or two for winning davis cup now.

@Pheasant I will add Sinners numbers after ATP finals but he has already accumulated 67 pts this year.

That puts him at 9th best matched with Nadal 2010 season. If he wins next 2 matches, he would be 8th best.

Only Djokovic 2011,2015 Laver 1969, Roger 2004, 2006, 2007 and McEnroe 1984 will be ahead IF sinner wins ATP finals. 2 more matches to go.

If Sinner can get both ATP finals and Davis cup, he would be approximately at double the GOAT pts than Alcaraz this year because Alcaraz flopped hard outside of grand slams.

Sinner joins the list for first time, ending year at number 7 best season ever.

Both Alcaaz and Alexander Zverev had very good year as well ending in this list.
Whose seasons dropped off, if the goal is to keep the list at 170 total seasons (if so, why that strange number?)? Or is the list longer now?

I would say the list will keep getting longer because at 120 to 170 the difference is minute. In open era almost every year a player finished top 2/3 is in the list. Except for truly weak years where number 1 barely made it.

This is good info. And it sounds like Sinner cracked the top-10 already. 70+’wins with .900’winning pct is rare. He also cracked double digits with top-5 wins with his 11-4 record there.
