I think defensive return, Federer should be up there. Even Isner said that Federer's return against his serve is better than any other player.
Despite those two things, good list:)

Some guy on this forum yesterday tried to tell me Pete’s 2nd serve wasn’t a weapon. His 2nd was like another 1st serve

It was Sampras' 2nd serve that saved him so many times! His was the top as far as I'm concerned along with other historians like Bud Collins IIRC! ;)

I honestly don't think that Djokovic or Nadal are in the top 5 in terms of speed. Top 10 yeah, but when you compare them to Gael Monfils, Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Murray, James Blake, Michael Chang, Bjorn Phau, they just look a bit slower off the mark. Having said that, I do think that Djokovic and Nadal are both better defensive players and hit better shots on the run than all of the players I just mentioned. I think this ability gives the illusion that they are "faster" in terms of foot speed, even though they aren't.

Maybe not now, but early Nadal was as fast as anyone(except Monfils).

My top 5 foot speed goes something like this:
1. Monfils
2. Nadal
3. Phau
4. De Minaur
5. Borg

Yeah young Rafa was definitely faster than those guys listed, particularly Simon and Nishikori. Hewitt was a scrambler but I never really found his court coverage that fast, whereas De Minaur looks faster than he is because of the jerky way he tends to slide around on the courts. Only Monfils and Djokovic match a young Nadal for speed, with Monfils being faster, and Djokovic probably a smidgen slower.

True!

Fedr 1st serve return >>> 2nd serve return (relative to tour standards)
Absolutely.

Others can't take their precious swings on a 1st serve as well as they would like to.

Fraud's chip return and excellent hand eye coordination help him to hit a good 1st serve return. Due to high speed of the return(which inturn is coz of the high speed of the 1st serve) it sometimes takes the server by surprise. They can't even get to the middle of the court before the ball passes them. Hence all those 1st serve return winners by Fraud and Djo.

It's a nice, deeper return, difficult to get on top of.

With the 2nd serve returns he either takes a swing which is okay or he slices which is very good or he hits the chip return which I absolutely hate(especially the FH chip) coz on 2nd serve returns you gotta hit good clean swings.

Chip return isn't effective. He ends up hitting them short and they are very attackable. They send him on backfoot almost immediately. The opponent is coming in to hit a winner off the weak return and now Old Fraud has to conjure one of those FH CC passes or the amazing BH flick pass but Old Fraud is not great at defense or passing shots so he just ends up losing the point.
This is one of the main reasons why ball bashers are bad for Old Fraud.

Nadal punished him a lot because of this even in Fraud's prime years.
But against almost all others he could conjure up so many great passing shots so that he could get away with the weak 2nd serve chip return. Poor Roddick have been passed so many times trying to attack the Fraud 2nd serve return.

But his 2nd serve return has always been a weakness against good opponents.
It's the only one of the 4 big stats(serve and return) where he lacks no?

Others take a full swing at second serves and as a result hit deeper and they don't have a disadvantage as soon as the rally starts.
After all those years one would have expected Fraud to fix that 2nd serve return but he never really did. There was 2017 when he was trying his best to take a full swing but by the end of the year he again went back to the silly chip return.

Not his fan, but omitting Nadal in all categories is surely a trolling attempt.
I've never cared for the guy; going back to when he was a kid! I didn't particularly care for his act from the beginning; exacerbated by him owning Federer! I would never irrationally try to undermine his record, but it has some shortcomings which I believe eliminate him from talk of GOAT'dom even if he surpasses Fed in MAJORS! I give him being in the top 4 ALL time, but that's about it! :sneaky:

Sure, Nadal has shortcomings as all of the top players do, including Roger. But that's not the point of this thread. When we look at the shots at least in a few categories Nadal is easily among the top3 all time. The prime example is of course the forehand - arguably the most important shot in tennis - where he ranks in the TOP2 all time.

Federer's shortcomings seem to be mainly with his inability to tame 2 of his biggest rivals; Nadovic! Other than that he's had an immaculate career who holds records of consistency that are unmatched and may never be broken! Unfortunately he's almost being matched by the other 2 in other categories that he'll never achieve! :sneaky:
