Apart from Delpo's brief appearances, the top 4 have all been Europeans since 2008. For years the discussion before every draw was which one of Djokovic or Murray would be drawn to meet Nadal or Federer in the semifinal.

Top ranked players were mainly Americans and Australians in the 70s with the exception of Nastase and Borg. In the 80s, more Europeans such as Edberg, Lendl and Wilander reached #1 followed by Becker, Muster, Kafelnikov, Moya and Safin in the 90s but they were not all in the top rankings at the same time.

Rankings used to fluctuate a lot more until this current era where 4 players have dominated the top 4 rankings for a decade,
so consistently. If Murray hadn't been injured for so long it's likely he would still have been in the top 4. The Big 4 were the first group of players to be identified as such because of their dominance for over a decade. That's why there is no Big 5 including Stan because he's only held a top 5 ranking for short periods.

Wrong...going by rankings Raonic was ranked #3 in 2016. Nishikori got up to #4 in 2015.

In the last 5 years only Nishikori, Raonic, and Del Potro were the only non-Europeans to make it in the top 4.

Or which one of Federer or Murray would be drawn to meet Nadal or Djokovic in the semifinal. Depends on whether Fed or Djoker was Nadal's top rival back then.
