With the year close to its finish, I thought it would be a good idea on who excelled on what surfaces. Below are lists of the top 5 players on hard courts, grass, and clay for 2007 based on total number of ranking points accumulated over the 2007 season.

Hard courts:
1. Roger Federer (3580 pts)
2. Novak Djokovic (3140 pts)
3. Nikolay Davydenko (1705 pts)
4. Andy Roddick (1575 pts)
5. Rafael Nadal (1530 pts)

Clay:
1. Rafael Nadal (2650 pts)
2. Roger Federer (1625 pts)
3. Juan Monaco (1005 pts)
4. Novak Djokovic (990 pts)
5. Nikolay Davydenko (885 pts)

Grass:
1. Roger Federer (1000 pts)
2. Rafael Nadal (755 pts)
3. Richard Gasquet (490 pts)
4. Andy Roddick (475 pts)
5. Novak Djokovic (470 pts)

Some surprises: Djokovic only 400 points behind Federer on hard courts. Davydenko in 3rd place on hard courts and Monaco in 3rd place on clay.

Looks about as I would expect. A little surprising to see Monaco so high on clay though, I would put him between 6 and 10.

He did play (and do very well) in alot of the smaller clay court tournaments like Buenos Aires, Poertschach and Kitzbuhel where he won so I can see why he's won alot of clay court points.

There's not too many great clay court players out there these days, you have Federer and Nadal, then probably Davydenko, and Robredo but that's about it, even Ferrer seems to do better on the quicker surfaces.

This year was pretty bad in terms of Fed's standards. I'm sure he can get more HC points in other years.

There are about 20 threads that discuss that topic. You'll just have to wait and see.

lol.. i find it funny that federer loses 8 times in one year, and everybody thinks he is on the decline. give the man a break, if any other player on the atp circuit lost less than 10 matches per year, i reckon that they would be extremely happy and think theyd had a great year.

In perspective, when Sampras was number one he ALWAYS LOST MORE THAN 10 MATCHES PER YEAR.

So, Sampras was always in a decline?

Here are Sampras' stats for the 6 years he was no. 1 (win-loss)

85-16
77-12
72-16
65-11
55-12
61-17

MY GOD... So Fed is on a decline because he has lost 8 this year? O----K---.

suddenly i remember about what novak djokovic said in montreal.
"he is just a normal guy he cant win everything"

Djokovic also said he was playing better than Nadal at the French Open when he retired at two sets down.

Anyways, by Fed's standards, this year was abit disappointing. by anyone else's, it was great.

True, but I'd still say he has to be behind Nadal, Fed, Djokovic, Davydenko, Robredo. He is right in the mix with the guys below that.

There are other good clay courters besides the 4 you mentioned. There is Djokovic, Andreev, Canas, Moya, Chela, Monaco, Ferrer, Nalbandian. Sure, these guys might not all be clay court specialists, but they can all play well on clay.

what an ass. He's got about 1% of Fed's talent and he goes around bragging like he's #1. Props to Santoro for putting him back in his place.

This year is not finished for Fed, maybe he will get more disappointed. But it is lucky for him that Nalby can not be in Masters Cup otherwise with such form he would kill Fed on any indoor surface.
I think the biggest sadness of Fed is he has been losing in 4 finals and his W/L in finals is not impressive at all: 7/4
Nadal: 6/2 (tomorrow will be 7/2 or 6/3)
Djokovic: 5/2
Davydenko: 1/1

The results from Paris will not affect these stats since it is played on carpet.

"In partnership with the FFT (French Tennis Federation), Gerflor has decided to be present this year with a new coated surface.
This decision has been made in cooperation with all the players and the ATP to offer them the most common surface during the BNP Paribas Masters Series 2007.Indeed, this kind of surface is used in most of the tennis tournaments in the world (indoor and especially outdoor)".

So I don´t think you should consider it a different surface. Otherwise anyone can make the carpet rankings too.
