I know Nadal doesn't come to the net often, but when he does, he does it at the right moments and can hit some nice volleys with touch.

However, today I was browsing through the thread about Gaudio vs. Nadal, and I noticed you were blatantly supporting Gaudio for some reason. You were like: "ALLEZ ALLEZ VAMOS GAUDIO!" I don't know why you wanted Nadal to lose so badly, but I thought it was funny.

Now, be subjetive, and submit your choices, and stop complaining...

It is hard to even narrow it down to a top 5 in some areas since there are so many people so exceptional at that area. Sadly though for the net game part, it was hard to even find 5 that were even that good. I cringed putting down Mirnyi as the 3rd best net player in the game today.

note my disclaimer...he is one of the most mentally tough players 99% of the time though, which is not saying that much considering that there are really only 3 or 4 truly mentally tough players on tour...it's kind of sad actually, going down the list of top 100 players...almost every single one besides the ones I listed has a reputation of mental inconsistency, of choking in big time matches or points, of beating themselves when things don't go their way....Nalbandian is more mentally strong in terms of consistency, tennis IQ, and not beating himself or playing beyond himself...his one weakness mentally has been closing out matches deep in the slams (particularly playing while ahead)...of course, this is the sort of mental weakness that pretty much all pros possess until they break through if and when they win it all.

So why do you think teenager Nadal has done so well thus far?

He's mentally tough -- that's been a given for years -- but for some reason even though others are far more talented than he is, he is posting the results, certainly on clay and even on hard.

Why is that, in your view?

Is he a one-slam wonder, or is he poised to continue to damage on the Tour?

So although Rafa can execute a few forehands, even though Federer and Blake's forehands are better, his mental toughness is the key to his winning the matches, no?'

Sorry, you mentioned his movement in there, too. Not as the best, but as a factor.

Do three of those ^ things mean my post?

These are the top 5 in each category of the ENTIRE ATP. If I put Nadal at #2 or #3 in one of these categories, that's a pretty big compliment to his game.

Forehand - Federer's is the best, Blake wouldn't be in the top 10 without his forehand. Nadal doesn't get quite as much juice, and against Blake he gets killed because of that.

Movement - Nadal studies Federer's movement on tapes. No one is better than Fed in this category. I'd take Nadal in the 100m though.

Mental toughness/fighting spirit is big. If there was a category for athleticism, I'd put him #1 in that too...I have the Tennis Channel. You can't even see the ball on the matches they show.

Only one I'd really disagree with is movement - he ain't the wild teenager he used to be.

But yeah, he is a better ball striker than anyone in history, I think. Serve is very good, very underrated. Net game is also underrated - he usually wins points up there, though he rarely ventures. Definitely not the best, but whatever. Agassi rules.

I didn't put Hewitt in the mental toughness category because he's a little baby these days. He loses everything and it doesn't seem to bother him at all.

.

I disagree. It's a false impression. Federer's movement is
weaker dept. compared to his other skills, IMHO.
Still very good but there are handful of guys who can be *faster*
than Federer.

Rogelio is an astute mover with great anticipation
but not particularly quick or smooth.
Hewitt, Coria, Nadal (and maybe Blake) are *noticably* faster.
Rogelio's movement is not smooth or silky as Coria who can
glides around the court like a melting ice on glass table...

When you talk about movement, Coria is the guy currently.
That's the way you want to move on the court...

Coria is slower than he used to be. Watching him play in Monte Carlo it is obvious he has lost speed. Hewitt has lost speed too. Neither Coria or Hewitt are quicker than Federer today IMO, maybe at their best but not right now.

Fed backhand is nowhere in the top 5. Nadal's backhand is a LOT more powerful than Fed's. Nadal can hit the ball pretty darn hard and flat on the backhand side with consistancy. Fed's backhand is a fruity. After what I saw at the French open this year, I'm convinced that his backhand is not even in the top 50. He does have a crap backhand compare to other pros. Many pros can hit clean winners with backhand. I don't see Federer doing too many of that unless some s&v comes up the net and let him pass. He has a very good passing shot and slice.
