TOP 50 Men's Wimbledon Matches (1968-2023)

A list I made prior to this past summer's Wimbledon tournament, thought I would share. I posted a similar list for the US Open a few weeks ago. As in that case I readily welcome disagreement on my ordering, or what I included or excluded - but more than even that I enjoy getting insights into matches from eras I may be less familiar with. This occurred several times over on the US Open match list with some matches of Noah, Krickstein, Wilkison and other luminaries from the 1980s, a period a bit before my viewing-time. In any case, look forward to any considerations you all may have. Might do an Australian Open list next, with that being the next major.

isner - mahut and anderson - isner semi 2018 are definetely top 50 and much more legendary than many of those picked 50 matches. ivanisevic - krajicek 1998 probably also belongs there.

No room on this list for pre-1968 finals or matches? I think that this list should be open to all eras.

How about the 2023 final? I thought that this was a good one.

Yeah that match was good, if not top 5 due to the very patchy play from one or other in sets 1 and 3 and of course that horrible meltdown towards the end where we almost got a nalbandian queens type default.

I would vote 08 final as #1. But I didn’t see 80 final live either.

Unless you have seen every match live and in the proper context, then it’s impossible to have a list like this. But it is pretty cool anyway.

2014 final is better than 2012 final.

I have some issues with that final. So sue me guys.

1) the rain delays really dragged it out and disrupted both players rallying rhythm (helped federer on serve)

2) they had no lights yet so the final games were lower in quality (2000 was pretty much decided as rafter seemed beaten despite an opponent not fully fit)

3) rafa choked from a lead in the 4th set tiebreak when other great tiebreaks in finals were less down to this kind of nerves. Even roddick in 2009 for me didnt do much wrong and ill take his word for it about the wind affecting his volley miss.

4) federer fought well but was pysched out much of the match. He allowed other results from before to affect him.. and not for the first or last time. Again compare how much better roddick was than normal the following year in the semis and final with bad matchups.

5) a lot of the official experts raved about it being great. I just found it a bit much. That is the most subjective of my reasons but i dare defy the official wisdom at new year drinks and get looks that haunt me for years.. not for that long as said friends were not ones for the long haul but still.
Edberg and becker were less hyped and less iconic for whatever reason but their wimbledon trilogy was no worse in drama and quality.. and they were really the 2 best grasscourters rather than the two best on the whole tour, on a surface that played favorably for both for different reasons to other eras.

This was a good ending to a trilogy and signified the end of federer winning consecutive titles at his favorite event. But i will put hand on heart that 2007 was better and 2006 saw peak fed doing everything in true maestro style. The drama here is of course the main draw.

The Becker-Agassi SF 95 is for sure Top 10 !!! The 89 SF Becker-Lendl too!
Both are matches with highest quality, mental strength and special circumstances.

Both of them do belong. Probably 1982 F Connors-McEnroe as well. Still, overall, a great list. Always tough for the person making the list. They obviously have to keep some good ones out. Then we say this one and this should have been in there, without saying which one's listed should not have been listed!

Nice BH passing shot from Fred MP down, though! Agree he was not close to his best in '08. Some say his prime (peak?) ended after YEC '07, and I'd go along with that. I'm impressed that he snagged that USO in straights over Murrah, actually. Good job!

Of course but 6-2 would have been a commanding lead plus championship point. However there seems to be a standard in mens finals at wimbledon that most do not end in a tiebreak.

Pancho Gonzales v Charlie Pasarell, surely? 1969 Round of 128 - 2224 16 1614 63 119

(Using your format this doesn't even look like a tennis score!) :-D

Rather difficult to exclude this classic, I should think.

Also,

1913 Wilding df. McLoughlin

1927 Cochet df. Borotra

1933 Crawford df. Vines

1949 Schroeder df. Drobny

1956 Hoad df. Rosewall (acclaimed as the best by Ted Tinling)

1964 Emerson df. Stolle

1966 Santana df. Ralston

You must have a good time machine in working order.. that doc brown documentary sure was entertaining wasnt it?

Good evening,

Dan Lobb - as you may know, I do enjoy researching and making lists such as this, and I often apply differing standards when I do so - you get more varied results. I have over time toyed with taking a list such as this back into the pre-Open Era. The main issue is I prioritize my lists having a sense of 'completeness' - that is to say I try to provide an overview of the totality of the tournaments for the years I have defined. As we venture back into the pre-Open Era finding resources that can supplement my lack of knowledge proves difficult. Finals can be accounted for reasonably well. But personally, without being able to feel as though I could provide a comprehensive enough overview, I would just assume not pursue. That said I am of course aware of the Crawford-Vines 1933 final, and many others that would rank high on a list such as this. I see you are familiar with a number of classic battles from the Amateur years - does this include the Drobny v Patty bout from 1953? Just such a match I have enjoyed discovering in my various queries into the past.

Moose Malloy - Connors-Pernfors was indeed a late exclusion.

Hard Court - I appreciate the kind words. One thing that plays a minor role in lists such as this (for me) is a certain degree of balanced representation. Not that biases' I have don't shine through (not so big on Isner for instance). I generally found the 1982 tussle between the two Americans to be a rather bland affair. Speaking as a Borg fan, perhaps it was his absence after so many which kind of left a certain regal flair to be desired. In any case, not down on McEnroe-Connors matches - have 2 of their US Open matches quite high on that list!

Galvermegs - I agree with a lot of your points on the 2008 Final. I at times rank the 2001 Final over it. However, the 2001, 2008 and 1980 Finals are essentially always top 3 for me, just considering the setting, the stakes, the drama etc.

Thanks for responding OP. I must admit i didnt really have the same investment in the nadal federer rivalry for another reason and that being both men were like sampras mk2 in that they were so much better than their peers. So all their finals were high quality pretty much but i never cared so much even about the given underdog. But its understandable a lot of other fans would be captivated.

Strangely i dont even think the 2001 final is top 15 material. It was special and a great ending to a unique wimbledon. But both men returned poorly most of the time and there wasnt the chance for too many great points as they both went for it on serve and the points were very short on average. Too many routine service games as well. I would definitely have that 1981 final higher as i said before, but you do respect it of course.

Also the 1984 final was so special from mcenroe and the key example of how good he was at his peak.. but i take it you prefer both playing well (or being allowed to play well ;) )

Rather difficult to exclude this classic, I should think.
I often think of pancho as the best player to never win wimbledon

Yes there was rosewall rafter and roddick. Yes lendl and some others did well despite clearly not liking the surface.

But gonzalez was clearly invalidated by when he was allowed to compete. And yet he could still push a much younger player in their prime and come away with a win. With tiebreaks maybe he would have won a round or two more after.

Yes, I would also include that 1953 Drobny/Patty match, which seemed to sum up the number of matches they would play against each other.

It was rather similar to the series of matches at the U.S. Championships in the 1930s between J. Gilbert Hall and Sidney Wood, in which Hall had a series of substantial leads over Wood but lost all of the matches.

1990 Final between Boom Boom and Edberg belongs WAY HIGHER. That was a classic battle of wills, and the third chapter in their classic Wimbledon rivalry

I didn't see the '98 Final between Sampras and Goran on the list (might've overlooked it). That was the only time Sampras was taken to the 5th set in a Final at SW19, and Goran resurrected his career to get to that Finals

Glad to see both Rafter/Agassi SFs on the list. Man those matches still haunt me as an Agassi fan

Moose Malloy - I appreciate the inquiry. Certainly do in some manner over the years. As with this Wimbledon match list, I'd probably need to dust off whatever it is that I put together, and update etc. I had in mind to do the Australian Open (1988-2024) before that tournament gets under way again next year. I could do the French Open as well - and there, just to have it be somewhat different, and owing to the degree of consistency that tournament has had over the years - might could take the time frame back to the 1920s or so.

as much as I am all for putting matches where federer loses higher up than when he wins, Wimbledon 2007 was a better match. Nadal of 2007 would have won 2008 4-4-3 imo against Federer of W08.
W07 unfortunately was higher quality. It might be the best match at Wimbledon to be honest. JMDP v Djokovic is up there as well

Gasquet v Roddick in 2007 is a horrible match. Roddick was pushing and not putting in any thought when coming to the net.

I’ll drop a hot take and say Wimbledon 2019 can be much lower on the list. Wimbledon 2007 is a lot lower yet much higher quality than Wimbledon 2019, like three notches higher level really.

Rosewall vs Laver- 1972 WCT final- 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 - Top 5, at least?

1990 Final between Boom Boom and Edberg belongs WAY HIGHER. That was a classic battle of wills, and the third chapter in their classic Wimbledon rivalry

I didn't see the '98 Final between Sampras and Goran on the list (might've overlooked it). That was the only time Sampras was taken to the 5th set in a Final at SW19, and Goran resurrected his career to get to that Finals

Glad to see both Rafter/Agassi SFs on the list. Man those matches still haunt me as an Agassi fan
Totally agree.

Good gosh darn list, man! Nice work :D I would have Djokpotro 2013 higher, and I'd have the other epic 2007 QF on here to go along with the one you have. That top 6 is particularly beautiful. Not sure any other major could claim so sexy a half dozen.

I think wimbledon will.always have great drama, atmosphere and historic stakes. But a lot of top notch matches happen in main tour events and the night matches in AO and Uso can be as good as it gets. The sampras agassi qf in new york is still hard to beat for sheer relentless quality

Agree big time on that USO Agassi v. Sampras QF!
