Top player in UK... clueless?

I started a thread about this before somewhere, but I thought I might bring up some interesting news. Joost Vogel, aka one of UK's top players, is clueless on even what forehand grip he uses. I guess it really is true that good tennis players just play tennis and let others worry about the rest. I highly doubt he knows what string or tension he's using either. I thought this interesting fact should be shared with the boards, quite contradicting to many string jockeys around here like myself.. No offense intended to this fine player, if anyone believes I am trying to flame him.

here's his video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZU4-JLGWd2o&feature=related
and here's his comment, unedited.
"Hey, I think I'm using a Semi-Western grip. I'm not sure tho, it might be that I even use a Western. So yeah.. You're welcome, bye."

Yes, it can be true. A good tennis player does not make a good coach because this good tennis player may not be a good communicator.

Everyone has their skills.

I guess you can either be out of it and just play, and be really good. Then their are other...myself included...who just want to know everything the is to know...and you can still play really well(Murray's mother says hes a complete freak and tracks and follows all the stats and new occurances).

Following stats does not mean you know the things that go into a stroke in detail. Although the mentality does help. :)

I think that he knows more than he actually says publically...
Like when people say "Oh I did horrible (on the test)" but
secretly know they did pretty damn well.

by the way, this is to anyone who knows anything about this, would a Western grip player use neutral stance? based on the video, he tends to use it quite a lot when he has time to prepare. based on this, would you say that he's using more of a semi-western forehand than a western? it may seem trivial, but I'd just like to know .

this guy is great. Volleys are great and I liked the forehand. Backhand looked a little awkward but obviously its really good! Thanks for the vid.

And I don't think its weird to not your grip. I don't know my grip either, I just know its around a semi-western. I don't know if I have a mild semiwestern thats on the border of an extreme eastern or whatever you grip fanatics call it. I just know its in the area of semiwestern...

Hes one hell of a player though, my god hes good

He follows everything to do with tennis...stats included.get it??

I guess I didnt "get it" because you explained yourself pretty poorly. Here is what you said "Murray's mother says hes a complete freak and tracks and follows all the stats and new occurances."

What the heck does stats and new occurances have to do with knowing grips? I can know the percentage of how many double faults I have had but not a clue on how to teach a forehand to a beginner. "Get it?"

Sampras knew his stats but had trouble explaining how he hit his forehand. "Get it." LOL

Well first of all Joost Vogel is from the Netherlands, not from the UK :) And i can assure you that he knows what tension and string he plays.

But his name sounds so British!

Not to sound stereotypical, but Vogel, as a surname, really doesn't suit someone in the UK.

Also, I would like to ask the name of the grip between semi-western and western.

I guess that would be extreme semi-western? Or maybe mild western :D

I think my grip is like semi westernish, but I think my grip is a little too small, so it feels like extreme eastern at times, sometimes even extreme semiwestern!

And I disagree with the fact that you're either a good tennis player or you know a lot of stuff bout strings and what not.

My teaching pro is a good player, but he also knows grips, and he strings racquets.

I really dont see why it matter if he doesnt know about equipment. If he plays well with it, why does it matter that it is?
