Topspin

When hitting topspin, does the ball hit from the top of your string bed to the bottom, or do you make it so that the ball lands in the center before you start brushing up?

Thanks. :)

its better to start in the middle than the top. you'll be able to hit the sweet spot, which allows you to gain power with the ball. when you hit the ball in the top, most likely, the ball will get hit by the frame or it would generate enough power to get it over the net.

I hit with a fair amount of topspin. My strings always break/wear in exactly the center of the sweetspot.

Even hitting topspin, the ball stays on the strings a VERY short time (4-5 msec?). You can try to estimate how much "rolling" takes place during this time, but I would just try to hit the ball in the center of the strings.

Realistically, you're not brushing much. If you do the math, to get the ball all the way across the racquet (26.3 cm on my DNX10 MP) you would need to swing at over 100 mph, and you'd need to be moving exactly perpendicular to the ball. In other words, you would need it to be all spin, with no drive whatsoever.

(velocity = distance / time) (v = .263 m / 0.005 s -- roughly 5 milliseconds, the highest speed that Goodwell [RSI magazine] had for contact time) (v = 52.6 m/s) (52.6 m/s = 117.66 mph)

EDIT: Oh, yeah, the point. The point is, try to hit the sweet spot. You're not earning any brownie points by missing it cleverly, and you're not going to be brushing more than a few centimeters.

Ehhhh... if that was for me, I don't want to sound rude (so you're welcome) but I'm not sure how well I worded that. I know that it was way more detailed than it needed to be, so I apologize if I made you go all o_O
