Toroline Super Toro

Rookie
I was able to get a set of Toroline's Super Toro (now in blue) a while ago, but the prototype version in green. Here's my review that I did in the summer. I plan to string up the now released version within a month. Both versions are six-sided but the blue is said to be softer and more forgiving.

Toroline Unreleased Sample (neon green) 1.23

Tension(s) used for playtest
: 48/46lbs

Regular string set up & tension: RS Lyon 1.25 @ 48/46 in Head G360 Speed Pro

Racquet used for test: Head Graphene 360 Speed Pro

Power: This string had an above-average amount of power in comparison to RS Lyon. I recently playtested the blue version of Yonex Poly Tour Pro 1.25 which had even more power than this string. Like YPTP, I think this string forced me to swing more low-to-high than usual to add some more spin. I like to play with a mix of flat and topspin shots on both wings but with this string, I had to make sure I was swinging more vertically than horizontally into the ball to make sure the ball would land in the court instead of going long. Also, it became more powerful over time.

Control: This string had a decent amount of control but I think a player using this string would have to be "on" or playing well each time he or she plays. I had to make sure I had good footwork and the angle of the racquet was not too far off from being perpendicular to the ground or I would have a short or long ball. When playing with RS Lyon, I had great directional control but could also expect a sense of consistency and leniency from the string if I wasn't playing the best that day. Also, because of the feel of the string, I would lose the ball in the string bed.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?): When hit in the sweet spot, the response was plush and comfortable. However, I find this string quite muted. I played with this string freshly strung the night before and it was stiff at first, but over time it loosened up. As the string started to lose a bit of tension and became less stiff, the degree of muteness increased. At first, it was a little jarring (probably from the edges) even when hitting cleanly and felt crisper (it was still somewhat muted, but became more muted over time). Now, it's hard to judge where I hit the ball when hitting cleanly but can still definitely tell when I hit it on the outer ends of the string bed. With Lyon, it is still muted but I don't feel the sense of losing the ball when hitting it as much as this string. It's as if the string bed is a taut net or trampoline rather than individual strings.

Spin: As I said earlier, I like to hit flat and with spin. With this string, I think I got the same amount of spin as with Lyon. Yes, this string has six sides to it, but I didn't see any noticeable effects. At first, I could feel it bite the ball but in the end, it was capable of good topspin and back/underspin.

Durability: I'm not much of a polyester string breaker so this string hasn't broken yet. The edges wore off within a week though.

Playability Duration: I would say this string lasted about 2 weeks before becoming too muted and too powerful. But for me, I think there needs a break-in period with this string because it was too stiff at first.

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time? Explain answer): I would string it maybe 2 or 3 lbs higher to account for the tension loss but would not mind stringing it at the same tension because I know there is a break-in period.

List any additional thoughts (optional): Serves: decent control, power, spin / Volleys: point and shoot, but the feel may throw you off

Overall: This is a pretty decent string, but won't be my new string of choice. I think it may be a string for those who can handle the stiffness and like a muted response. I also think it suits string breakers because they could probably break it before it needs to be restrung. A bit too powerful and not as forgiving on off-center shots and on "bad days". I haven't played with Hyper-G before but from reviews, this string sounds very similar.

Resurrecting this thread to say I had this strung at 52lbs in a 2023 Head Gravity Pro. Found the string very stiff, muted, and plasticy. Like the OP said, it is not a forgiving string. Anything off center gave me a dramatically different response compared to sweet spot. Flatter shots would launch and putting some shape on the ball resulted in shots falling shorter than I expected. It also tolerated slower swing speeds worse than some other polys, like my beloved Head Lynx Tour. Just hitting big groundstrokes from the baseline, it was pretty good once the strokes were grooved in, but in point play, I struggled to find my range. Overall, hard to calibrate. Held tension really well. I kept waiting for it to loosen up, but after 8 hours of play, I decided to cut it out because it seemed to be working at cross purposes with this thin-beamed, responsive player's stick.

Really high level (D1-pro) players mostly bashing from the back of the court with power/spin rackets might like this one.
