My First Impressions of Toroline Wasabi (Pink) and Wasabi X,
Both strung at 54 lbs on my modded 2019 Pure Aero (343g strung). My normal strings are Hyper G or Confidential (1.30) at 54 lbs, but I used to use 17 gauge for each.
Wasabi (Pink): "Comfort + Spin"
Spin: I think the major takeaway was that while the spin was really good, I wouldn't say it was game changing. I don't think it's dramatically more than hyper g or confidential (16 or 17 gauge). I knew when hitting I'd get the spin I wanted and if anything, it felt more consistent because the string went back into place. We'll see how that holds up, but I notice that hyper g and confidential get a bit erratic after 3-4 hours of play when they start notching.
Comfort/Feel: Where this string feels unique is in the comfort department. This is by far the most comfortable poly I've hit with in a while, even compared to Volkl Cyclone which I'd consider a soft poly. It really pockets the ball, and while it's still nowhere near as comfortable as a hybrid or multi setup, it removed any discomfort I felt with the Pure Aero.
Power: I feel like this is the weakness of the string. It definitely has more power than other strings I've used, but I feel like it's a bit more inconsistent. While the spin benefits from a consistent string bed, I found it difficult to gauge how hard to hit. It wasn't terrible, but there were a few instances where it felt like I hit the ball the same, but one went in the net and another shot was great. I attribute my difficulty dialing in feel a result of the comfort of the string more than it's inconsistency, but we'll have to see.
Wasabi X: "Vanilla"
Spin: Consistent spin, nothing to write home about and probbaly the least spinny of Wasabi/Hyper G/Confidential, but definitely respectable. Wasabi X isn't shaped and doesn't have texture, so all it's spin comes from "snapback." The level of snapback I think is exaggerated, but it isn't bad by any means. Not why I'd get the string, but it is good enough for a poly, especially at this price point.
Comfort/Feel: Less comfortable than Wasabi, but still more comfortable than my normal string and definitely felt like one of the more comfortable polys you can put in the Pure Aero. Feel is much better than Wasabi, it felt much closer to my normal solinco strings, and responded predictably, which made me feel more comfortable hitting with it. I would like a little more feel, but I think it balances comfort and feel well.
Power: Consistent power. I think it's pretty comparable in this regard to hyper g. Consistent power, nothing too wild, but it's reliable.
Overall, I liked both of these strings a lot. They definitely have attributes that are appealing and at a price point that is great. I'm a little worried at the lack of feel, particularly on Wasabi Pink, but I'm looking forward to throwing together a hybrid of both to see what that can do.
