Toroline

I did a full bed of truffle in a functional tennis saber. Much prefer it to x one biphase or the last Rexis multi I tried in that.

Will see how long it lasts to see if it’s worth it over just syn gut.

It’s really sticky to each other in the full bed, so I can see why a nice slick cross will go will with it.

No shank breaks when hitting with it in a 37inch racket strung at 30lbs. (Tension needs to be a lot lower in that frame. For context, I strung poly tour pro at like 17lbs.)

Curious what color they got coming. I just bought a few sets and just decided to lean in to the purple though can’t say I love that it’s purple.
The alt colorway will be Grey, IIRC that's what was said on Tennis Nerd's video with Eric

Their newer releases are all trending up in price. I stopped trying them because I don’t want to find out I love something that costs more than double what I pay for Lynx Tour.
Don't need to worry about that, only o-toro tour has good tension maintanance. Bit more muted in feel but you can easily get more pocketing and softer feel with using some round cross with lynx tour mains.

Yeah I'm the same, I'm always hurting myself trying out Toroline strings only to be pissed off because a reel costs twice as much than LT...
Am I missing something? I know their strings have been getting more expensive, but last I checked, a reel of Lynx Tour goes for $170 on TW, and a reel of O-Toro is $185. More expensive, absolutely. But I haven’t seen a reel of LT anywhere near $90.

I found a 200m reel of LT Champagne for €109 (on the river site) and mini reels of O-Toro is €99 for 100m, so not quite 2x, but close enough

Currently TWE with -10% influencer code (I like to support smaller dudes like dandan10) LT 1.25 200m reel 89€ and o-toro tour 1.23 100m reel 89,91€. So even cheaper:cool:

No jumbo reel OTT currently on TWE. Yeah with jumbo maybe slightly less than 2X price.
Still, they are too expensive. I haven’t tried a single Toroline string that’s better than Confidential Soft for me. And you can get Solinco reels for $115 or less overseas. The newer Toroline strings are priced like premium polys.

Maybe it’s too profitable having folks chase down the hybrid rabbit hole.

I got a ~15% custom bill recently for my order from TWE to the US. Still worth it for Lynx Tour perhaps, but much less attractive than it used to be without the fat custom. The $800 minimum threshold for import duty is gone. Also the bill came like 2 months after so I thought I was safe.

If you live in Europe, ignore what I said

Lynx Tour Champagne 1.25mm full 200m reel for 74.80 euros on TWE, with influencer code, before shipping, and import duties to the US.

I’ve ordered many times, when there was no import duties, the value was insane.

I asked Toroline Eric about this at some point.. he strongly discouraged it. Said "you coooould do it, but why?!"
My experience with Truffle X:

For the past two months, I’ve been using a hybrid setup with Solinco Mach 10 1.25 @ 48 on the main strings and Truffle X @ 50 on the cross strings.

I really liked this setup; my initial thoughts are:
1) At first, my wrist always hurts a little (this has always happened to me with all Solinco strings—it’s not elbow pain, it’s wrist pain), but after warming up for about 5 to 10 minutes, the pain goes away
2) I like this hybrid because it offers both power and control, yet it’s very comfortable thanks to the Truffle X.
3) The spin is “moderate”—not quite what I expected from the Mach 10, but I can’t complain.
4) The main thing is that this hybrid lasts me about 8 hours, which makes it not too expensive for me (I play 2 hours 3 times a week, so since I restring my own rackets, it’s perfect for me).

However, in the back of my mind, I always wanted something with just a little more spin and power without sacrificing the comfort of the Truffle X.

That is, until I saw the TennisSpin video about using Truffle X on the main strings.

I tried it out, using Truffle X @ 50 on the main strings and Solinco Mach 10 1.25 @ 48 on the cross strings

And all I can say is, WOW... I only played a 2-set, 2-hour match, but here’s what I can tell you compared to my original setup:

1) Much more power and spin—both increased by 20% or 30%. It literally felt completely different (I could even increase the tension by a couple of pounds to compensate)
2) Spin was what I liked the most; now I had more directional spin—which is very unusual—since I could “hit” spin and felt that if I wanted to cross the ball with more angle, I could do it (a very different feel than my current set up)
3) The comfort was incredible, and besides, I didn’t feel any pain in my wrist.

Overall, I really liked it and I’m going to keep using it to test its durability and, especially, to see how it reacts when I hit the edges of the racket.

Anybody with truffle in the mains that can share their experience.

I've been having slight elbow pain with a full set of O-Toro Tour at 48/46 lbs in a 16 x 19 Angell TC 100. I have a set of Truffle X that I haven't tried yet. I'll try it in the mains with O-Toro or O-Toro Tour. I also have Wasabi X or Caviar I could try with it. Bet that would make a plush set up.

I've gotten the impression people prefer round strings over shaped in the crosses? It makes sense to me intuitively but of course intuition is often wrong. I loved a full bed of O-Toro Tour at 50lbs but my rear delt/shoulder couldn't handle it.

If you want more top spin generation via increased snap back slick round string good choice. But you still have to have top spin friendly swing path of course. For a flatter hitter like myself full bed of sharp 6-sided string like OTT felt controlled (53/51lb in tfight 305s 18x19 98 head size) High string to string friction locks up the string bed and gives good boardy control because strings move less. Launch angle is more consistent because strings move less, ironical that shaped strings increase launch angle compared to round ones.

A locked stringbed does not pocket the ball smoothly. The impact shock is transferred directly to your wrist, elbow, and shoulder. To protect your arm, it is highly recommended to drop your tension down into the 44–48 lbs (20–22 kg) range.

I'm running Otoro Tour x A5 at 46lbs in a Mizuno Acrostrike 305, zero discomfort. But tempted to try full bed again at 44-46. Previous arm trouble with full bed Tour was in a 2019 Prince Tour 100 310.

Has anybody tried otoro tour/A5? Thoughts and feedback? What about A5/Otoro Tour?

I'm testing the O-Toro Tour on my B racquet. It's a really good string, stiffer than the regular O-Toro/O-Toro Spin (my main string nowadays). It has way more control, less power and only generates spin if you swing fast enough. If you're good enough it might be an obvious choice but I'm still having a hard time adjusting with it. What I did like is the tension maintenance - I'm on the 2nd set of O-Toro Spin and the O-Toro Tour still have to loose enough tension to be noticeable.

Not this exact setup by I just had a session with Otoro white with cash crosses. Im having a hard time with the “feel” of the stringbed vs my usual Otoro/otoro snap. Also not getting as much action on the ball vs my usual setup. Will definitely need more than a one hour session to determine if it’s worth continuing with.

I have a set of both Otoro tour and a hybird set of Otoro tour/A5 and working to decide on what string to put in mains. Just finished with a full bed of A5 which I enjoyed the directional control due to being round but did miss a little bit of that bite on the ball from the shaped Otoro. Weighing the pros and cons of A5 in the mains or not.

How would you compare A5 to alu power/alu power soft? I am not looking for exact copy because I know that isnt possible, but maybe 80% alu which lasts at least 6-8 hours. A5 sounds promising but unfortunately I can only buy 100m reel so just want a little more opinion on this before buying.

Will string it in new blade pro 100.

Interested to hear your thoughts on A5. If it plays stiffer and more consistent than snap tour flex it would be a winner for me as a cross string.
A5 is way more springy than STF. I have no idea why it's rated stiffer in the FAQ on Toroline's site. I'd string A5 three (mint) to four pounds (black) higher than your STF tension. It does not have the backbone of Alu, but obviously it's got better tension maintenance and snapback but it's no Alu-killer like Sniper — which has actual aluminum in the compound. To me it's like a gray M8 that's round, very lively, very slick but not a ton of connection.

As is the case with most of Toroline's portfolio.

Now, Grapplesnake on the other hand, usually better feel and rebound characteristics.

As such, the ultimate setup these days is often Grapplesnake mains, Toroline crosses. Best of all worlds.
I was using Wasabi X, but @Trip got me into STF black and I have not looked back.

Save yourself a bunch of time and just try it, especially if your main has any shape. It's stiff, but it's not because it's so slick and resists notching, you get more snapback, which dissipates the energy protects your arm. If the strings keep sliding your arm does not take a hiding.

I had to cut Otoro/cash(softer a5?) out. It just did not work for me. I couldn’t get over the feel of the stringbed and couldn’t vibe with it. I also went down in tension and felt some tennis elbow. Otoro (all colors) by itself, fantastic for me. Otoro/snap (even tf), fantastic for me. Cash/a5, cool string just not for me. Cash has a cool cool color though

I played both side by side as crosses in matched racquets, same tension, and found A5 to play stiffer than snap tf and have better tension maintenance. Also noticeable in the hand A5 being stiffer when weaving crosses. Feel and sound are noticeably different between the two but ball flight was similar. A5 plays more consistent against higher level play for me as the string wears. Ball trajectory does not creep up as much as snap tf and overall plays more controlled.

Huh, I did notice it was stiffish when weaving but more springy on impact, it's paradoxical. STF black just lets me feel the ball flattening more on impact, it has a backbone. I'm using Sniper mains so maybe A5 just feels too similar. With STF black I notices they are different strings. You basing your STF experiences based on both colors? Because mint is noticeably softer to me.

I have only played the black snap tf. I think you are right about pairing both together it might be too much of a good thing with the sniper mains. I play with a soft main so the ping that A5 delivers gives me a little more feedback compared to snap tf. Both are good strings, just personal preference and what you pair it with.

...the ping that A5 delivers...
This seems to me as a very accurate way to describe it as a cross with a softer main, which is how I've been using it. I find it actually to be a "metallic" ping and I am having a hard time liking it, although I love the better tension retention and the super slick characteristic.

Sure!

RPM Blast 17 - Nice spin, low power, arm hurts in a deep aching numb pain kind of way, makes me feel confident in my swing but zero confidence in my body staying healthy, still spinny after 5 hours but feels bad when I touch the ball.

Yonex Poly Tour Pro 17 - Medium spin, less than RPM blast, feels great for 2 hours, balls go sailing if I play the same after 2 hours. Doesn't hurt my arm, but hurts my mental wellbeing when I have to focus on controlling the ball flight instead of being confident in my swing.

Head Hawk Touch 17 - Medium spin, slightly more than Yonex Poly Tour Pro, feels good enough fresh and feels pretty good even after it loses playability. Arm is a little sore but not as bad as RPM Blast.

Head Lynx Tour 17 - So much spin, literally the ball dives down with violence into the court, great power, it feels and plays like a better, modern ALU Power with good string maintenance. My arm felt like it was on fire from the first contact, and after playing with it for 2 hours I was convinced I have zero future in tennis if I use this string. I still think about how nice the action off my racket is when I was using this.

Diadem Solstice Power Teal 16 - Equal spin to Toroline and slightly less than Head Lynx Tour, ball felt wild as soon as I start swinging fast. Nice power, good ball grip, I hit the ball pretty hard and heavy against guys who hit hard and heavy so it breaks within 1-2 hours of play for me. Can't knife a slice with this string for some reason and I can't hit a serve flat.
Cross Lynx Tour with Enso Pro or Wasabi X and your pain is gone. Trust me, worked great for me. Even 1.20 full bed lynx tour hurt me. 1.25 LT champagne with either of these crosses worked perfectly.

Ps: I string between 46 and 48 lbs mains and 44-46 cross

How is tension maintenance with both?

Can anyone kindly update the full data page of A5 from racketpedia? Their data states that A5 is softer than o-toro, which is the reverse to the toroline's statement in their FAQ page. Thank you.

As good as it gets. Full bed of LT is probably better (I wouldnt be able to tell because I cant handle it but that would be my guess) but it is very good. Wasabi x better than Enso Pro Id say. Otoro snap tour flex might be even better but stiffer as well, I havent tried.

As I stated above, A5 is quite springy and more lively than black STF. It's going to expand the sweet spot and help with volleys, block returns and pickups, but on full cuts with Sniper mains I was hitting the back of the fence compared to the same stroke in a matched racket with black STF crosses and Sniper mains. It is stiffish when weaving crosses, I could almost push the string laterally the whole way across, I could get it over to the 7th main in the midsection, 8th and 9th crosses. I just had to guide the tip up and over each main when pushing. So I guess someone could consider that stiff, but it has a lot of juice. If you strung a full bed at 55 and Alu at 55 there would be none of the crispy metallic feel, it's more like Poly Tour Strike or Hawk Touch but much slicker.

Poly tour strike but slicker? Dont make me buy more strings after I just settled

Poly tour strike is my favorite string in many aspects but the effort in getting spin made me move away from it. If there is a similar one with better snapback it might just be the goat.

I’ve been playing with A5 as a full bed for over a month now in my Vcore 95 so thought I’d share some of my thoughts.

On the first hit I hated it, low powered, made the sweet spot feel incredibly small and zero forgiveness that just made it feel like I was being punished (likely exacerbated by the 95” racket). At that point I was ready to cut it out, but on my second proper hit, it definitely opened up and played pretty decently for the rest of its life. It’s clear the string has a defined break in period but after that, the playability (at least for me) stayed relatively consistent.

I don’t think this string lives up to the hype in terms of the highest spin potential of any round string (for example I can get more spin out of Razor soft, Lux Alu power and Lux element to name a few) but it’s no slouch. However, for me the best things about this string was 1. its consistency with power delivery that made it feel very linear and 2. its playability over its life (after the break in that is!). The other highlight was returns of serves as it let me redirect, and even add pace, with ease - it has been the best string for return of serve that I’ve played with.

In terms of negatives, outside of the initial break in period, I wouldn’t say there are any as it’s very much a jack of all trades string, in that it does everything above average but doesn’t really excel in anything either. In that regard, it reminds me of a better version of Poly Tour Pro, which in itself isn’t a bad a thing.

Going forward, would I stick with this string? I’m undecided. The break-in period was very off putting and I would worry that if I dropped the tension to accommodate, the power post-break in maybe be too much for my preference. I could try to hybrid with a softer cross to elevate this, but that seems another rabbit hole in itself! The price is also very high, so maybe one to revisit on sale.

In the interim, I have a set of ‘Cash’ waiting to be strung, which may solve the issue. Or the Infrared A5 could also be a solution, but I would be concerned the 1.20 gauge might bring the power and launch angle up above my preference.

Alas, after an awful start, it has been a positive experience and it’s nice to see a somewhat crisp Toroline offering for a change! This will be one of the strings that I’ll end up putting head to head with others in my search for the perfect string to compliment the VCORE 95.
