Toronto Maple Leafs are Cushion Heads

First off. I don't know what a cushion head is. Secondly. The Maple leafs and their fans are the most overrated thing on the planet.

Boo. Boo.

P.S. Matthews is trash

I ways lucky enough to see them play at the Gardens multiple times playoffs included. Always a blast. To say they're overrated is a bit of a stretch. They' ve been on a bad luck streak for almost 50 years:(
Lacked depth of team tbg even then..
But so do the Habs and the Canucks..

This is the best Leaf team for decades, fun to watch.

If you put them on the ice against the 1962 Leaf squad, would they win? Probably not, but this is still a relatively young, learning, getting-better team.

At least they dont suck that bad these days

Turonno will support them regardless of how they play tbh

The Leafs will always be the league's biggest laughing stock until they actually win a cup, that's just the truth. All of their cups came in a 6-team league in an era of black and white TV where the Beatles, JFK, and Pele were the biggest names around. No one outside of a few remaining geriatrics have ever seen this team even play for a cup and hell, I don't even remember the last time they won a playoff series.

I can remember them from the sixties, I saw all four of their Cup wins then (I was rather young then). That 1962 Leafs team had nine HOF players plus other all-stars in peak form, I rate that team #2 all-time to the Habs from the late fifties.

Do I need to be Canadian to have a clue?
Simple. They get all the love and their players get overrated due to it, such as Matthews, while the best player (McDavid) gets trashed on because he is not a leaf.

It would be one thing if they were good, but they always suck and still get all the attention, and now they are good and it is miserable to hear fans and analyst drool over them.

It would be like Barca not winning in 50 years but still having the same love and hype.

This is true. But they are playing in the worst division, and Matthews is overhyped.

Oh, I think I can understand a bit.
It’s like in Argentina, where we have Messi, the presumably best active football player in the world, who hasn’t won anything with his National Team.

But they are hyped every world cup. But Messi isn't over rated. Maybe on the international stage, but Matthews is not even top 5 best player in the world and they treat him like Gretzky (Pele).

Matthews and Marner are good.
Sure, they take some time to work up to the Cup winner level, but that usually takes time.
Marner is good, and of course Matthews is great, but he is not the best player in the league like they make him out to be. Remember, this is by far the weakest division too.

You never know until playoff time, this year the Canuck teams have all improved.
In scoring stats, Matthews, Marner, and Edmonton's star guy are at the top, right?

There you go, 1962....almost 60 years ago when neither of my parents were alive lol

The drought this franchise has been on for over half a century now is extremely embarrassing given how Toronto is supposed to be the "hockey capital." The Blue Jays, Raptors and TFC have all been founded and won titles since the Leafs most recent cup

The Leafs are the equivalent to England's national football team....they're the so-called "home" of football with loud arrogant fans but like the Leafs, they also haven't won jack s*** internationally since the 60s

Oh I'm not a Leafs fan (far from one) but Matthews is genuinely a very good player...this kid is gonna dynamite for years to come. The Leafs on the other hand are no closer to the cup though imo. They're clearly beating up on a crappy group and if you were to put them in the same division with Pittsburgh, Boston, Washington and Philly, they probably wouldn't make the playoffs this year

This is how much has changed since the last time the Leafs won the cup in May 1967:

- There were only 6 teams in the NHL
- Moon landing did not happen yet
- African Americans were still legally segregated in most of the US
- MLK and RFK were still alive
- The Super Bowl did not exist
- Tennis Open Era did not exist
- Three-point line did not exist in NBA
- Bill Russell and the Celtics won the NBA Title....yes old a** Bill Russell and his Celtics were the reigning champ the last time Leafs won
- England were the reigning World Cup Champs (my goodness how times have changed lol)
- Gretzky & Lemieux were 6 and 2 years old, respectively (Crosby was more than 20 years from being born)
- There were only 6 nations in the European Union
- Height of the counter-culture era
- Height of British Invasion Mania
- Cold War and Vietnam War were still ongoing
- Penny Lane by The Beatles were the number one song
- Colored TV did not exist
- Cell phones did not exist
- Computers did not exist
- Queen and Led Zeppelin did not exist
- Chevy Camero was the top selling car
- Canada's Charter of Rights & Freedoms did not exist
- My mother was not born yet; my dad was just 3
- The Twin Towers were not built yet (they’ve now been gone for nearly 20 years)
- Greater Toronto had 2.2 million people; we now have nearly 6.5 million living in the GTA
- The average age of a Toronto resident in 2020 is 41 years old (this most recent cup happened 53/54 years ago)

With only 6 major league hockey teams, and about 110 players on the rosters, the competition was tough, the teams would be competitive today.

I do agree here, so the original 6 competition argument falls flat... but that still does not make me understand why Toronto gets all the special treatment today.

I'd love to hear @Steve0904 's opinion on this :)
LOL. I think the Leafs right now are not as far ahead of the other teams in the division as their lead suggests. I still think they’re the best team in the division but not by such a runaway margin. I’m semi worried about the 3 upcoming games with the Jets. That’s their toughest competition IMO. They can beat Mtl and they can beat Edm, but the Jets scare me tbh. A big team with playoff series winning experience.

I’m also scared of Carey Price standing on his head like he did last year and taking the Leafs out come playoff time, but I am enjoying the recent surge. They are finally playing the kind of defensive system based hockey that will make them successful in the playoffs IMO. So we shall see I guess.

P.S Montreal fans are pinheads, or Oilers fans after the recent beat downs.

I don’t think this is true. I think McDavid is better than him, but he’s on the level of McKinnon at least, and if he wins an award this year you can’t say he didn’t deserve it. The kid has been awesome since he came in the league. To be quite honest, if you’re underrating Matthews it means you haven’t watched enough Leafs games.

I think they’d make the playoffs. They’ve been a good enough regular season team to give them that IMO. But I agree they’d have trouble winning a playoff series.

Your not understanding me. I think he is a great player and will be a top 5 player for the next decade.

I just can't stand out the media fawns all over him. It is way too much. When you start saying he is better than Mcdavid, then you have drooled too much.

PlusI have seen too many leaves games in my life. The past 3 were the worst.

The schedules are too wonky this year to know how good teams really are. Toronto will lose to Boston or something like they always do.
Unfortunately that is probably still true.

I just wish the Leafs at present were given more credit from fans of the other Canadian teams to accept that the Leafs are most likely the best team in Canada, and if not then they are 2nd to the Jets, and we will find out shortly how they match up in the upcoming 3 H2H games. Because they are clearly better than all other Canadian teams.

And the big thing here is that they've been the best team in Canada (for consistent point totals at the end of the reg season at least) since Matthews was drafted so this isn't a one off thing. Calgary had a great year once in the last 5, same with Edm, and Mtl, but for consistency it's been the Leafs or the Jets. They would make the playoffs in any division even one that includes Boston and Tampa among others because they've done it every year before this one. This idea that the Leafs would miss the playoffs altogether in a tougher division is not supported by the facts, and is quite ludicrous to be frank about it. Finishing 3rd to Boston and Tampa perhaps, but making the playoffs all the same. It's not that hard to see unless you're a jealous fan of another Canadian team.

And sure the Leafs haven't won since the dark ages, but I think "laughing stock until..." is a bit much while the Leafs are making the playoffs and the other Canadian teams don't, some of which are in the basement of the league and have been for a while. It's just a fall back like the 04-07 weak era BS in tennis. Now obviously I wish they could win a playoff series which I think would lead to even more respect and creditability among fans of other teams, but no Canadian team has real bragging rights when the last Cup came in 93. And if they do I'd rather brag about something relatively present than something that last happened when I was 3 years old.

And on that note even if we stretched it back to the 2000-2004 years the Leafs had a very good team then pre lockout. Roberts and Niewendyk, Sundin, Kaberle, McCabe, with Curtis Joseph or Ed Belfour in net etc.... All old guys that retired post lockout, but a great team nonetheless. Consistently 2nd RD of the playoffs and an ECF berth in 2002 losing to Carolina. Always beat the Senators no matter if the Leafs were the 8 seed and Ottawa 1. So the Leafs are probably Canada's best team post millennium, they're only made fun of (and sometimes by myself as well) because they haven't won a playoff series since 04 (and haven't won since 67) and all the other Canadian teams caught lightning in a bottle for a year or two.

And no I don't count what Montreal did last year as making the playoffs. They were 10 pts out at the stoppage and were given a handout by the league because they're a popular team. I do think the league would've done the same for Toronto, but at least Toronto was in a playoff position then. Montreal was floundering and would've missed the playoffs 100%.

No I think I understood fine. I said McDavid was better than him, but I think him and McKinnon are probably around the same level. The kid gets media attention because he deserves it. Being the leading goal scorer in the league will do that. Just like McDavid gets fawned over in Edmonton, we just accept it because he's the best, and frankly we like it because he's Canadian whereas Matthews is not. Same way in my teenage years I held a grudge for Ovi just because he's Russian and Crosby is Canadian. I'm sure Draisaitl gets fawned over in Germany too. We just don't see it. In fact he won German sportsperson of the year last year after he won the Art Ross.
