Total Knee Replacement and Hyaluronic Acid Shot experiences?

Beautiful! I’ve always had a thing for the Celeste color!

I’m on the big island right now and there are lots of people out running and riding on the Queen K highway. Most of the cyclists are on modern carbon fiber bikes but they just don’t have the same visual appeal to me, probably because I’m old.

The other thing about any modern frame is that they’re designed for 35 mm tires, and so the chainstays are longer than they used to be. When I had my Carl Strong made, I asked for every last mm possible to be cut from the chainstays because I love the look of the rear tire tucked tight against the seat tube. On my Palmares with a 28 mm tires, there’s less than a 2 mm gap and that just looks so fast to me. Today’s Litespeed frames have an almost inch gap. That chainstay length helps with the chainline when running big-big but I’d sacrifice that just for the look.

Aloha to you and the Big Island

I remember when racing tires were my 19s and then 23s for training/etc.

But the larger tires get to be more comfy.

Hope you are getting some good outdoor time with the knee while out in Hawaii.

thanks fellow TK warriors for letting us have a little cycling chat.

Found some motivation this past weekend. While watching a movie at home, grabbed the dumbells and did some reps while standing on a balance board. The balance board is fun for me. I also tried to do some mini squats on the balance board and also single leg squats on solid ground (not too far down in movement). I've been on a ladder about once a week and I try to really alternate legs.

Well, just as I was about to embark on my age 65 tournament play, my RIGHT knee is now hurting. It feels like my left knee in the year before I had my knee replacement. I'll have some days where it feels normal, then other days where it feels stiff and hurts during random twisting, landing, and pushing off. And when those bad days happen, they can be pretty bad - I can't play without a slight limp on the court. I'm back to wearing a knee brace full time.

I got a Synvisc shot on Monday so hopefully it will help in the coming weeks. Sheesh - I was all hyped and ready to make a good run this year, except now I can't run....

Sorry, that sucks, are you considering replacing the right as well ?

Is there known arthritis on the right?

Sounds like my knees. I had my right TKR and it is fine. However, now my left knee is doing and feeling just like yours is now. I feel your pain TKR Brother.

Yeah, it really feels like this is the short term road in front of me. My rotator cuff surgery went really well so I thought I'd be ready to go as the baby of the 65's. Now I might have to wait until I'm the baby of the 70's.

Yep. MRI imaging a couple of years ago showed bone on bone, or at the best a very minimal amount of cartilage on the inside portion of the knee joint, with spots showing bone changes and also bone spurs elsewhere. When I had my first knee done in December 2023, I thought my right knee was going to follow shortly in 2024, but just having my left knee fixed seem to off-load my right knee enough that it felt great. And it did for almost two years....

Dang - sorry to hear about you too. I played last Thursday and it was hurting. I walked with a limp on Friday. It was better Saturday. I did an 11 mile mike with 3000 feet of elevation gain on Sunday, and Monday the knee felt pretty good. I wake up this morning and I can barely stand up without pretty significant pain.

It's the same pattern that I had before. It just flares up out of nowhere, and the good days are good enough that I wonder why I would want to have a TKR. Then a bad day hits...

Best of luck to you!

I feel like an old car.....needing replacement parts here and there. At least the replacement parts are available, lol.

I have heard of a guy who had to replace his plastic insert. Two months later, he was back to pretty much full strength running and working out in the gym. So there's a lot of hope that if the cement holds, the first TKR will be the most grueling thing and the other "maintenance" on it is no worse than something like a bad sprain.

Went to the doc yesterday to get the results of an MRI on my right knee.

Turns out I have no cartilage left in there, I have arthritis in the knee, and my meniscus is torn in two places.

At age 54 the doc says he can give me a hyaluronic acid shot (if my insurance approves it), he put me on Celebrex, and said when I can't put up with the pain any longer he'll perform a total knee replacement.

So I'd like to hear any experiences you've had with either the hyaluronic acid shot, total knee replacement, or both. Positives, negatives, results, would you do it again, do you wish you'd have done it earlier, how bad is PT after TKR, etc?

Some background info: had microfracture surgery on the other knee 10 years ago because it didn't have any cartilage in it and it's been great...doc told me then to never play tennis again, that lasted 6 months, been playing ever since with no problems; had a DVT blood clot 3 years ago, don't know what caused it, ran from mid thigh to mid calf, on Xarelto for 8 months to get rid of it...so that's a bit of concern any time I have surgery

Thanks for any and all input!

Dealing with knee issues is always difficult. Hopefully, you get some helpful feedback from people who have been through the same surgery.

Well, I made the decision not to play Oregon State. The knee is just not good right at the moment. I can get out there and rally down the middle as well as I have any time in the last few years, but the moment I make a few hard charges into a corner or up to the net, the knee gets stiff and painful. It's probably the deep rooted memories of what I went through with my left knee but then I almost unconsciously stop bending my knees or planting as hard. My competitive level drops and it almost seems that because I'm moving in an awkward manner, that hurts the knee even more. It's a vicious cycle.

I had a Synvisc injection two weeks ago and there hasn't been any improvement. I will probably throw my name in the hat for Washington State but without prior competitive matches, I'm probably going be a one and done. That won't actually be that bad if I can make it out without hurting something. My wife and I just got our itinerary for our time in Tibet this October going to Everest Base Camp and I can not afford to hurt my knee and miss that experience.

Thankfully, riding a bike is not painful and I've been training hard. My sustainable power levels are down from ten years ago but I don't know if that is just lack of fitness, added weight, or that my redline has come down with age - it's likely a combination of all three. For two to three minutes, I'm still about as fast as I was back then but the dropoff is pretty severe longer than that.

The best to all of you knee warriors out there!

I know this might seem silly, or maybe not, but I'm about 4 years out from my TKR. I've been playing tennis for the last 3 but have always dealt with a lot of inflammation which has hampered my movement on the court and made it really painful in the morning with trouble walking down the stairs without hand stabilization.

For the last 4 months or so, I've been wearing Incrediwear leg compression sleeves while I sleep. My knees have gotten so much better that I'm actually able to run normally. Haven't done that in 6 years. I guess this has really helped me with the inflammation. I wear the knee sleeves when I play tennis, both knees, as my other knee is bad as well.

I'm 61 and played 5 matches at a 55 and over state tournament and 4 matches at a 40 and over state tournament match recent back to back weekends. I couldn't believe my knees would allow that.
