Tour Finals chiefs keep anxious eye on Nadal & Murray

LONDON (Reuters) - Organizers of the ATP World Tour Finals in London next month will be keeping a keen eye on Andy Murray's results and Rafa Nadal's health over the next couple of weeks.

Home favorite Murray is one of several players scrambling to accumulate enough ATP Race points to grab one of the three remaining spots while already-qualified Nadal has been diagnosed with appendicitis and question marks remain over his appearance.

Murray, an ever-present at the season-ender since it came to London's cavernous O2 Arena alongside the River Thames in 2009, apart from last year when he was recovering from back surgery, guarantees a spike in ticket sales at the hugely popular event.

Likewise, 14-times grand slam champion Nadal boasts an army of fans worldwide and should he succumb to ill health the event would be down-valued, whatever the quality of the eight men who do line up for the ATP's showpiece tournament.

Another bolded orgy of Nadal adoration from the man from West Point.

Apparently the simple fact that the exact same thing would be said if it concerned Fed and/or Djokovic is lost on OP.

Cognetive dissonance at its best.

If you EVER see similar sentiments expressed about Federer or Djokovic, please share it with us. Cognitive dissonance is knowing that Nadal is the most popular player worldwide but still put forward views suggesting that Djoko and Fed are just as popular.

I am sure Federer as the player with the most mens singles grand slams ever and Djokovic as the world number 1 have more than enough fans that feel the WTF would be lessoned by their absence as they have earned enough points to qualify.

Do you have any facts to back this up?

Not conjecture, opinion, or speculation but actual real hard verifiable facts?

Well to be honest Nadal fans seem to be louder at the O2 and you hear Spanish phrases every now and then, Federer's fanbase seems to be a bunch of rich flagwearing Swiss that buy out one corner of the venue like they're corralling themselves and shake their little cowbells. This is just my observation of course

Nadal's absence being a major loss in value for the WTF ? Please...
In the same way that Federer and Djokovic (to a lesser extent) would have a major impact on the tournament...I don't see how this would be a ridiculous point.

It's perfectly plausible that there are many people who are Rafa fans first and tennis fans second, in the same way that there are Federer or Djokovic fans who live tennis second. I know someone who went to watch Federer at the US Open last year, who didn't know that the tournament was a big tournament, let alone a grand slam. Plus, as a Rafa fan, I've seen plenty of accusations of Rafa fans not knowing a thing about tennis or even enjoying the sport at all.

If you have difficulty even fathoming that possibility, I hate to break it to you, but it isn't the statement that is being ridiculous.

Shame if Nadal's not up to playing.

Then again, no big deal since it's only going to make an already blah money-grabbing, quasi-exo event even more blah-ier.

Just read what the WTF Chiefs say if you don't want to believe the social network fan numbers.

So despite my post making it clear to not bring up speculation, conjecture, or opinion

you both do exactly that

From what I'm seeing now, Nadal probably will be up to playing.
But he won't play, because they want to do the surgery early enough so he has a good amount of time to recover and train for the AO.

If both Rafa and Andy won ´t play than it would be bad for organizers, bad means they will still earn a lot of money but less than last few years with, Nadal is 2nd most popular player worldwide after Roger so worldwide audience will be clearly lower without him + Andy is ,,home,, player so his participation can boost ticket sales in London and overall attention for this event in the UK, anyway i think TV deals are long terms so money from TV companies should be the same like last year i believe, also money from sponsors should be the same, but ticket sales can possibly suffer with no Andy and Rafa, but nothing horrible, maybe prices will go down few GBP

They'll lose more money if Murray doesn't play than if Nadal doesn't play. Murray much more popular in the UK than Nadal, even with his Scotland vs England comments.

In the UK yes, but globally now, Rafa is bigger name worldwide, i believe TV contracts are long term - at least for few years, but with Nadal out, worldwide audience numbers will be lower so that means if new contract will be negotiated for 2015-2018 for example they are in more difficult position to sell TV rights to TV companies with lower numbers from last 2014 WTF, also with lower numbers, because of Nadal, let´ say TV deals are 20mil in US for example, but they can´t ask from advetisers- i mean TV companies the same money like last year with no NAdal there and them expecting to have lower ratins.

How does clayqueen somehow manage to turn every thread into a Nadal worship thread.. Even those that aren't about nadal. Serious mental issues going on...

How many MB's does your web connection even allow? Nadal the most popular player worldwide?
Yes, among 14-year olds, I'll give you that. The same category of the Western population who also appear to think that Bieber is the best/most popular kind of music.

(Now, where's that bucket, I need to puke)

As a regular of internet forums for about three decades, yes, I've witnessed my share of stupidity enfolding.
You, however, manage to take it to heights I've never even feared to see.

Welcome to being #1 - and only - on my ignore list.
That's a genuine accomplishment, I daresay so.

^ Facebook isn't popular among 14-year-olds.
Facebook was created in 2004.
It was popular among 14-year-olds in 2004-2006 (and some of the parents also took an interest and got accounts too).
Plus all the families I know today are not letting their kids use facebook, because its considered to be a dangerous influence.

I guess that Djokovic would be a bigger miss for the WTF. Nadal has never been a big contender, when he dared to show up at the WTF. He would be a big miss for any clay events, where he actually performs well.
Murray would be a bigger miss, since the WTF is on homesoil, sort of. It's the same with Tsonga or Monfils at the French Open, or any other player in a home tournament.

As for your acquaintance being a Federer fan without knowing what the US open stands for... PLEASE

I'm pretty sure that Facebook was created for students at university (or college in the US), so how can it have been popular for 14 year olds when it wasn't open for them? You had to have a university email account to join up as I recall when I joined, so 18+?

Still seems popular to teenagers here, my colleagues with 13-16 year olds all have children on it.

murray needs to win again soon or be eliminated from any discussion of the big 4... nadal just needs to get back to playing,,the sport is in a mini decline without him.. fact.

this "musical" reference reminded me of a beautiful citation from a TTTW philosoph (cronus, XXIst century):
To the question of this thread.

It is just like asking if Justin bieber good for music? and if twilight is good for the movies?

I guess we all know the answer.
(when asked if the nadal was good for tennis)
