Tourna Big Hitter Silver 7 Tour

Tried stringing my SW104 with 17 gauge S7T at 10% looser than my normal tension and did not have a great result. Normal hitting was fine but with extra ballspeed and a bit higher launch angle. Whenever I got put on the run, and especially with a shot that had some speed to it, I couldn't control my shot well enough. It was just too powerful and the lower tension, combined with the inherent springiness of S7T, decreased control below my threshold for managing it under pressure situations.

Going to try it again at my normal tension +5% and see what happens if I go the other way.

Made it to 14hrs with my last set of of BHS7T in a 6.1 95 18x20. Cut it out due to playability dropping off a bit. So far with two reels have cut every set out before it broke. Just strung a PS97 with BHS7T in the mains and Sensation 1.30 in the crosses at 54/54. Will be a decent test of the string. Multi doesn’t support the poly mains very well so they get beat up and stretched out quicker than normal.

Have been trying a bunch of different strings. Latest was BHS7T in a Wilson Ultra Tour @ 38 lbs full bed. Played 2 hours and it felt great... maybe a little too soft. Went on vacation and didn't play for 2 weeks. Picked it up again an it felt and sounded different. Not too harsh and still playable, but seemed on its way to dead. Thoughts on how long poly can sit in a racket unused before it goes dead?

I Have some vintage racquets I've strung up with poly and have had them sit for years without being used. I don't really notice that the strings change much. If they were fairly fresh the last time I played with them, they still feel lively and elastic the next time. That's not to say they haven't changed, but that they don't totally lose playability just sitting in a racquet for years.

Ok gang. I grabbed 1 set of BHS7T 17g to try. Wondering what tension I should string this?

I play with a slightly weighted up APD. Here’s a few setups I use currently:

Luxilon ALU Power: 50lbs
Tier One Black Knight 18: 50lbs
Pro’s Pro Blackout 1.24: 54lbs
How did your experience with BHS7T compare with Black Knight? I'm interested in both and am expecting my BK set in a couple days. Also are you using them in a full bed?

I asked the following in TW Questions/Comments. But I figured I'd ask it here as well.

Can anyone explain the difference in the engineering process between Big Hitter Silver and Big Hitter Silver 7 Tour. Aside from the fact that one is round and the other has 7 sides to it. Is there any difference in the material used or the process in which the string goes through?

The reason I ask is because a few years ago I tried the Big Hitter Silver and didn't care for it at all comparing it to Alu Power. And lately I've been told by many to try the Big Hitter Silver 7 Tour. And my thoughts have been... "If I didn't care for Big Hitter Silver, why would I like Big Hitter SIlver 7 Tour?" Isn't it the same string but shaped?

I think the shape differences are enough to suggest giving it a go.

I think the chemical or the manufacturing process changed. Tourna Silver was released quite a few years ago and did not report great tension maintenance on TW and other site's tests whereas the new Silver 7 Tour has some or the best tension maintenance of any poly in tests.

For anybody who knows, how would this string be hybridided with a natural gut? I’m planning on using this with possibly a natural gut in my blade.

I would assume the gut will get torn up due to the shape of the silver tour string. I thought about trying that combo as I have both though.

My apologies. For some reason I didn’t get an alert of your response.

Yes, both in full bed.

To me BK is softer, more refined, and the shape of the string is very subtle. Very forgiving, arm friendly, but still grabs the ball reasonably well. Holds tension pretty well.

S7T is bright, crisp, gives you a ton of feedback, and the shape of the string is in your face. For me the feedback borders on too much, particularly on an off center hit. But man alive does it grab the ball. And, it plays fairly consistent for a good while.

I just played 13h with VS/BHS7T before the gut broke. It lasted as much as a slick round poly.
Spin was great, but the comfort was not there. I found off center hits still jarring and just was not as plush as I expected it to be with gut.
Sharp and rough string cutting through the gut, that's a myth. Gut is ridiculously strong.
The gut is in fact so strong that it smoothed out the sharp edges of the BHS7T after 5-6h! I've never seen this happening when I play with it full bed.

I've been experiencing some shoulder tendinitis after hitting with BHS7T exclusively full bed for about 3-4 months, and that's why I decided to move to gut/poly.

I have problems with the comfort on BHS7T. Played about 5-6 hours, some hard hitting and matches, the elbow twinge returned after a year.

Was imagining more comfortable experience since not many people complained.

Apart from that, control, spin and power is optimum, good tension maintanance at @22/21 kgs.

I might hybridize this with Velocity to eliminate elbow issues. Or going much lower in tension maybe @ 18 / 16 kgs Any experience here?

I would encourage you to try it at the lower tension levels. I've dropped it as low as 16kgs and found it to be fun to play with. I've been playing with a full bed of it at anywhere from 16 to 21kgs. I've found that I like it best at 20kgs. This is the only string I've attempted to use at lower tensions and it's worked out well for me.

This info may be buried in a thread here somewhere but... Can someone with significant experience with each compare BHS7T to Tour Bite? I'm using Tour Bite 1.25 now but want to try BHS7T 1.25. Unfortunately there is no data for 7ST 1.25 in the TWU compare strings tool at the moment . Also, tension wise, if I'm 48 lbs with TB should I stay at that tension with BHS7T?

@rooski as you have probably seen, BHS7T only has data for 1.30. Data looks almost identical as TB 1.25. IMO, I'd tie up the Tourna 1.25 at the same tension as you do TB on your first time out. Going up 2#s might also be something to consider as the data for BHS7T 1.25 would possibly be lower. I haven't played with TB in a very long time and BHS7T i've only used in a hybrid.

I believe @Injured Again compared the two in the TT review thread for BHS7T.

I played with Tour Bite 1.20 and 17 gauge Silver 7 Tour back to back. I started my review in the Silver 7 Tour playtest thread with this:

To summarize, going from Tour Bite to S7T, you'll notice more ball speed and equal or greater spin capability. Tour Bite is the string I think of when talking about a crisp feel. Silver 7 Tour still has that to a lesser degree, but it comes with added comfort. Pocketing feel on Tour Bite is pretty consistent but with S7T, I think it's a bit more variable. On shots where you swing hard, S7T give pocketing feel and feedback like a slightly more muted Tour Bite. On slower swings like volleys, there's a hint of a springy feel which enhances comfort but may make it feel difficult to control those shots at first, and this was my biggest adjustment since moving to S7T.

I think you'd be okay stringing up S7T at 50 pounds to start. I went from Tour Bite 1.20, which is going to be softer than the 1.25 you are used to, so going up a couple of pounds seems to make sense.

Good luck!

@rooski Forgot to mention that the biggest issue with Silver 7 Tour seems to be with shear breaks near the edge of the frame or at the grommets. The best guess is that some sort of post-extrusion treatment makes S7T a bit brittle. I've only had it break on me once in about 40 stringings but my best guess is that the string gets twisted at the grommet and eventually that causes it to snap. So just be extra careful for the several central mains and crosses, and not to pull too hard at the tie-off knots.

I remember the same comments when BH Black 7 17G came out.. Great advice when stringing this stuff.

I'd just like to add that in addition to the mishit problem, myself and a hitting partner who has also been using the string for several months now both coincidentally have a bit of arm trouble. Not sure if it's related to the string or not since it's not really that stiff but the off center hits (which also cause the breakage) are incredibly jarring with this string. I've switched to gut/poly last couple of months and shoulder is gone.

I haven't noticed that off-center hits are that jarring, but that may be for two reasons. First, I'm using a pretty hefty racquet, an SW104 which has additional weight in the handle so it's about 350-352 grams. Second is that I use differential tensions, with the center eight mains and center five crosses at my "reference tension", decreasing as I move towards the edges. I only started this when I switched to the SW104, trying to find a way to combat a lower launch angle due to higher string density than I previously used. It did give me a higher launch angle, and also made the sweet spot a little bigger and made mis-hits off the edges of the stringbed a lot more forgiving. When I first strung up the SW104 with equal tensions on all strings, mis-hits near the sides would land pretty short. With the lower tensions on the side mains, these shots come off with a higher launch angle and a bit more speed, so the ball goes probably ten feet deeper. Shots near the tip with the low cross tension (32 pounds at the very top cross) have enough oomph to get the ball decently back in play rather than dumping into the net.

It's not a cure-all, but it definitely helps take off that worst 20% of the shock.

Has anyone strung this up at sub 40? I'm down to about 45 and everytime I drop the tension, it seems to only get better. Just wondering what the super low tension playability is like.

I started out at 45x43 per the TW reviews and love it there (just got a reel to try like 3 weeks ago). But I have a reel and based of a couple tests it's my new permanent string.

How low you want me to go. I'll string it lower next time and side by side them (gimme like a week to hit through my current setups)

This looks like a very good string. Only wish it comes in thinner gauges. How does it compare to Tour Bite and Max Power?

Edit. Never mind saw the TB comparison. If someone has compared it to the max power..

Fwiw the 1.25 is significantly smaller than most pentagonal 1.24-1.25 strings I've used so if you haven't tried it out irl it may be smaller than you'd expect

The regular Tourna Big Hitter is my string of choice and this was a strange string imo. The TW review and tests said it was very good at holding tension but after I strung it up and played with it, the strings moved all over the place with no snapback like most polys. Even when I moved the string with my fingers, they strings would not snap back in place, but the strings did not play like it was dead or tension was lost. After a week or two, the strings actually started snapping back better? than it originally did when it was freshly strung, completely opposite of normal stringjobs.

Playability wise, its a crisp playing co-poly that plays more comfortable than cyclone or other shaped strings but I am not a big fan of shaped polys so I'm the best judge for this string.

Out of curiosity what tension did you string it at, also what racquet head size, and string pattern? Ime it had great tension maintenance but an otherwise normal lifecycle.

It was 52lbs in a 98sq inch frame with 18x19. Like I said, it played fine, it wasn't spraying, good control like a freshly strung full bed of poly. Just, it did not have the snapback that most fresh full bed of poly gives you and I had to straighten the string like it was a multi or syn gut. A lot of people were also complaining of it breaking during stringing process, so idk what gives with these strings lol

Yeah that's what I meant by normal life cycle: snapped back till it didn't any more (~aweek and a half) for me in a 98in² 16x19.

Did break it on the stringer on my third stringing tonight, although I probably just snapped it with the awl which I don't think is the issue I normally see posted.

So for me snapback improved after a week or so, and snapback was better after a few days to a week compared to when it was fresh. That's why I said it was strange.

Touna Big Hitter Silver. My go-to string for over a decade. Great performance and dirt cheap. Even if the price wasn't a factor, I prefer it over the premier high-end polys

I just tried a hybrid setup with Tourna SynGut and BHS7T @44lbs. It was much easier on my arm with the same spin I've begun to love about the string. Not sure how long the SynGut will last but I've played with it for about 10 sets of heavy hitting with no issue. Still enjoying the setup so far.

I just strung up another racquet with BHS7T in a hybrid setup with Black Zone 18g which is one of the softest poly's I've played with. I'll let you know how it goes after playing with it for a while.

You put the softer string in the mains. So I highly doubt that he'll put the Black Zone in the crosses. Unless he has no idea what he's doing. Then he might.
As long as they don't notch the softer string you put the smooth poly in the crosses and the shaped in the mains. I doubt that blackzone is gonna notch from anything let alone silver 7

If you don't understand the difference between Poly and gut idk if I can help you.

They have the poly in the crosses for the same reason one puts the smooth poly in the cross in a poly poly hybrid: the slicker string goes in the crosses to allow more movement and snapback in the mains.

For hybrids I tried:

Gut/Poly - VS Mains / BHS7T Crosses works well, gut gets frayed a bit more than with slick crosses but durability is the same for me. Djoko, Fed etc do gut mains / poly crosses.
Poly/Gut - BHS7T Mains / VS Crosses - $$$, this lasted an hour and a bit sadly, felt like a dampened version of the BHS7T, initially great spin, then gut absolutely shred and popped. Several ATP players prefer ALU mains / Soft crosses (Sensation, Gut, Element or another soft cross) for a more poly feel but softer on the arm.
Poly/Poly Hybrid - BHS7T Mains / Black Zone crosses works well.
