Tourna Mega Tac Overgrip Playtest!

First off I'd like to thank TW and Tourna for the samples.

I am a recreational player in the 4.0 range. I hit with a semi western grip and create a lot o my own power. I currently play with a Head IG Speed Pro.

I always use and overgrip on my racquet on top of a leather grip. I believe you get much better feel from the racquet this way with the absorbent quality of an overgrip.

I used to be a die hard original dry tournagrip guy, until I discovered Solinco's Wondergrips, which I use religiously.

Upon receiving the samples and installing one, I noticed that the new Mega Tack was thicker that what I was used to and extremely tacky. I mean it felt like if you hung this stuff up in the house you could catch flies!

Installing was no different that any other grip. It did not wrickle as easy due to the increased thickness an for once, I had plenty of extra at the end so one does not have to stretch the heck out of the grip to make it fit longer handles.

Upon using the grip for several hours of play, i noticed the tack did not fade like the regular version. I do think that it added a bit of thickness to the grip that I did not care for.

Sweat absorption was very good as I am a heavy sweater. It did become slightly slick after a second set of singles here in AZ.

The one downside is the grip did start to show signs of wear after one outing, which gets costly if you play a lot.

Would I use this grip? Well let me say since finding my wondergrips that I can use for weeks without changing probably not. My current grip has slightly less tack, but much better feel and seat absorption.

The new grip from Tourna is excellent for someone looking for extreme Tack, but does not sweat as much as I. Also for someone doesn't mind changing a grip each time they play.

It is a quality product and much better than their original, just not for me.

I will stick to my current grip which I think is a hidden GEM.

Was the test grip easy to apply (any wrinkles during install, did the grip lay down nicely?) It was average, had to rewrap it one time due to a few wrinkles and there is still some but it doesnt bother me at all.
Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?) Exactly long enough to fit my handle (Babolat Aero Storm), not exactly sure how that compares the length of other handles. This is not a problem for me with a one handed backhand anyway.
Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?) The grip was extremely tacky, having said that the racquet slipped out of my hand once. I am not sure how this happened, but it took me a while to get used to the grip. It was very hot however, so I was sweating a lot. The second time I used it I had no problem.
Longevity of Tackiness - The grip has lasted me for a week or so, that is 3x as long as the pros pro ones generally last.
Level of sweat absorption - This is one area where the grip was not so great, I felt it didnt absorb sweat compared to even my normal ones. This may be why it lasted longer.
Would you consider using this overgrip? Yes, I would once I got used to it.

A bit slow of me, had a long match tonight so i'm down to the wire. Here goes!

Typical of Tourna grips, didn't have a taper but I was able to stretch it so there was minimal wrinkling. Typical wide grip similar to the XL tournagrips, and consequently it was just like installing Tourna Tac. No difference, in my eyes.
Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)
It was about what I expected from Tourna; IE it fit my grips (4 1/2) but only because I stretched it with minimal overlay. Could be longer, but it works as is.
Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?)
Wow was this tacky! After install, it was definitely sticking to the hand quite a bit. Almost too much; very welcome on serves and volleys, though. I found myself having slight issues with grip changes initially, but once it got a little grimey it became perfect for me.
Longevity of Tackiness
One racquet has considerable grime on the grip, but I still have no need to change it. I would have for sure gone to a new Wilson pro by now, but it's still fairly tacky. I could see a couple more hours on this grip, good longevity if you don't shred grips.
Level of sweat absorption Higher than I anticipated coming from Wilson pro. I think the thickness helped a lot, and it made the grip much more economical to me.
Would you consider using this overgrip? Definitely thinking about it as an alternative to Wilson pro; didn't like the feel of regular tourna tack, but this is pretty good.
List any additional thoughts on the overall performance
I'd have preferred a longer, less wide grip ( for leather grooves), and it would be nice to have a taper. However, as I wrap lefty this is a minimal issue to me. I'm hoping to see it in different colors, and I bet black would be even better than white.

Overall, awesome playtest.. good grip for the cooler days I've been experiencing, and keeps my grip on the serve, which is extremely important to me. Wishing I'd only used one frame to playtest so the three pack would last longer xD

I use the white Wilson Pro Overgrips. They’re nice and soft and somewhat absorbent. I’ve tried the Blue Tournagrips and didn’t care for their abrasiveness and short length.

No problems with application. Easy to figure out which side was up since the outer side was tacky.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)
Yes, it was a good length. Not like the standard blue Tournagrips which are always too short for me (never bothered to get the XL version which would compensate).

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?)
At first I thought it was nice, no slipping or anything when I first applied the overgrip. Grip changes took a bit of effort until I got used to them. When they got wet from sweat, they felt a bit too slick and gooey. When I put my racquet down it would pick up everything including bits of clay and grass clippings.

Longevity of Tackiness
They stayed pretty tacky for 2-3 matches.

Level of sweat absorption
Not very good, unfortunately. Sweat seemed to make them slick and gooey.

Would you consider using this overgrip?
No, I didn’t really care for the degree of tackiness and how it felt once they got wet from perspiration. I generally don’t need a grip that is quite this tacky!

List any additional thoughts on the overall performance
I can see how this would work well for a lot of players out there. I just prefer something less tack and more absorbent.

Yes. Currently using white Wilson Pro Perforated. Previously used white Wilson Pro and white Gamma Supreme. Tourna Original XL if I am playing where there is humidity (not very often.)

Grip went on fine. I take the extra 30 seconds to cut my Tourna Original (and this) to a taper at the starting end. It would be nice if they put a taper on it to start.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)
Long enough for my 4 1/2" Prince grips. Looks like I could have covered another inch.

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?)
Through the roof. This is by far the tackiest grip I have used, to the point that it may be TOO tacky at the beginning. Definitely took some getting used to.

Longevity of Tackiness
Much longer than the Wilsons I usually use. This is the longest lasting grip I have tried.

Level of sweat absorption
I'm playing in the high desert - no humidity and 70 degrees or less lately - and I don't have particularly sweaty hands. I can't comment on this because it wasn't an issue.

Would you consider using this overgrip?
I'm not sure. It may be excessively tacky. I have been using them for a couple weeks and have become more accustomed to them, so time will tell once I switch back to the Pro Perforated. I may miss this much tack and the longevity of it. I may be glad to be back with an overgrip that makes it easier to switch from semi-western to continental or my backhand. This overgrip also comes in black. With many other brands the black is not as tacky as the white. If the black is a little less tacky there is a good chance I would switch.

List any additional thoughts on the overall performance
I had problems (listed a few pages ago) with this grip over leather. 45 minutes into my first session the overgrip slipped down on the leather exposing the grip and causing wrinkles in the overgrip. I had to rewrap the grip much tighter than I do with my Wilsons or previously with the Gammas. Once I wrapped very securely I did not have another issue with it. I notice that the other playtesters that had issues with it slipping were also over leather and nobody complained about it slipping over synthetic.

Tourna Mega Tac Overgrip Playtest

I played this overgrip side by side with a fresh Wilson Pro overgrip (white) on top of Wilson Shock Shield Hybrid grips(white).

Do you typically use an overgrip?

Yes, always

If yes, which one do you use?

Recently have used Wilson Pro (white) and Gamma Dermagrip (white)

Was the test grip easy to apply (any wrinkles during install, did the grip lay down nicely?)

This overgrip was trickier than others to put on. I wrap the wilson pro overgrips a little looser so they are more tacky. The Tourna Mega Tac requires you to pull "taut" (per instructions) or it doesn't wrap well. The overgrip rode up over my buttcap twice during play and i had to rewrap a few times. I typically use the rubber thing on my racket to hold the overgrip down, not finishing tape. This is all stuff that you can get used to though.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)

The overgrip was plenty long.

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?)

This overgrip was ridiculously tacky. I played this in 60-90% humidity (Houston, TX) and the overgrip felt sticky/gooey.

Longevity of Tackiness

This overgrip continued to feel gooey even after it started losing "grip". Overall I would rate it as consistently having more tack/grip than a similarly played wilson pro overgrip.

Level of sweat absorption

I didn't have problems with the sweat absorption but, I wear wristbands. It did feel gooey right out of my racket bag (probably from the humidity).

Would you consider using this overgrip?

Only if I moved to a drier climate. I couldn't get over the sticky feeling so I won't be purchasing any. I definitely recommend trying this overgrip if you live in a drier climate than me, which is pretty much anywhere.

List any additional thoughts on the overall performance

Honestly, I hit just as well with this as I did Wilson Pro overgrip and the overgrip seems to retains tack/grip longer. Too bad I couldn't get over the sticky feeling though.

[The Meat]

After a few weeks of play testing here are my results.

Grip applied quite nicely at first, but wrinkles if you twist it a little.
Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)
It was long enough on my midsize and midplus racquets.
Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?)
I loved the tack, it reminded me of the good old gamma supreme level of tack but a little more. The tack at first felt a little like sap, but after a few hits it dulled a little into a nice tacky feeling.
Longevity of Tackiness
The tack lasted a good few weeks of play without causing too much slipping when wet. I would say it out does gamma supreme's tackiness over time.
Level of sweat absorption
None, Sweat either stayed on or evaporated off the grip after some time. When it was humid, the grip was quite slippery.
Would you consider using this overgrip?
If the price is around the gamma supreme line I would definitely consider purchasing it.

Overall I liked the longevity of the tack, it reminded me of the good old gamma supreme overgrips which still reign supreme in my mind. Better tack than yonex supergrap and old gamma supreme, lacks in absorbing capabilities like supergrap. It's a nice grip, hopefully it comes in a 30 pack.

More than long enough. No complaints here.

This grip does just like the package says: grabs you back! It's a little too much for my preference, but I had no slippage issues at all. Top notch for tack.
Longevity of Tackiness

Used it for about 8 hours, and the tackiness was still going. I have very dry hands though.
Level of sweat absorption

I got a couple drips of water on it while in a match, and this stuff doesn't do very well when damp. I'd say 4/10.

Would you consider using this overgrip?

Probably not. Pacifics xtack is amazing.

I really don't know why tourna does precut the end for you..for me that was the worst part of this grip. Overall, if you have super dry hands this would be one of the better ones to try. It would be good for long handled rackets like yonex or prestiges.

Was the test grip easy to apply? It was pretty easy to install after you got past your butt cap. Its very similar to Tourna Tac in how hard it is to apply but if your careful it shouldn't be a problem.
Was it sized appropriately? Yes I actually had a good inch or two left over after gripping.
Level of tackiness: This grip is easily the tackiest grip I've ever used. I thought Tourna Tac was tacky but this grip brings it to a whole new level.
Longevity of Tackiness: There is so much tackiness in this grip that it practically lasts forever.
Level of sweat absorption: This grip has many great things about it but sweat absorption was a downside for me. I sweat a lot and this grip doesn't absorb it very well.
Would you consider using this overgrip? I would definitely consider using this overgrip. In fact I'm almost set on switching to it right after it's released and I run out of overgrip. Overall this is a very great grip but would be even better if it absorbed sweat a little better.

At 9g that's a heavy overgrip. That said you can adjust for weight by changing the replacement grip. Even the same brand of replacement grip can vary considerably in weight.

For me Tackier the better. Yonex Super grap was just Not tacky enough for me. but one thing that concerns me is that Other playtester on page 1 said there was some kind of SLIMY feeling. What does that mean ?? Did you have that issue also ?? If it is just part of tacky feel then I don't mind that. What did he mean by Slimy ?? slimy slippery like snail mucous ? or just slimy Tacky ??

Longevity of Tackiness - after a few matches, I feel the tackiness is essentially the same as when just wrapped. Any difference is not noticeable on court.

Level of sweat absorption - High, which I think is just right for my situation. I might be making a turn into the tacky side (heartbreaking, I love tournagrip )

Would you consider using this overgrip? - I would. It has a good feel and appears to be durable. Maybe in a different color than white, though

List any additional thoughts on the overall performance? - I think it did what Unique set out to do, and while it may be too much of a jump for me right now, I could see myself using it more in the future if I get used to tacky, not dry, grips

Yes, Unique Tourna Grip Original XL. I've used Tourna Grip ever since I started playing in high school in the mid-90's and only switched to the XL version when I first started playing with Yonex racquets a few years ago.

No issues for me since I'm used to Tourna Grip and always cut it myself to make a taper. There were some wrinkles at the beginning of the overgrip as others mentioned but that wasn't a big deal to me. I also like that there was no adhesive at the beginning as that messes up my synthetic grip underneath.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)
This XL version is exactly the same length as my regular Tourna Grip XL so it was perfect for me on my Yonex RDiS 200. I also overlap only about 2mm.

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?)
Wow, a fresh grip of Tourna Mega Tac is definitely the tackiest grip I have ever used. The first time I brought it to practice, I let my teammates hold the racquet and they all said it was way too tacky as they are all Yonex Super Grap and Wilson Pro Overgrip users. As others have already mentioned, your hand does stick to the grip especially when the grip is fresh. It was tougher to change from semi-western to continental as I'm used to using Tourna Grip Original which basically has no tack to it at all.

Longevity of Tackiness
After the first one or two sessions, it loses some of the initial high level of tackiness but is still plenty tacky. Basically it's perfect after that point and it is still going strong for me after 7 sessions and a total of 11.5 hours. I'm going to continue using it until it's either all ripped up or my hand starts slipping but I doubt it'll ever lose the tackiness. It's already surpassed the longevity that the Tourna Grip Original gave me which was around 9 hours or so.

Level of sweat absorption
Definitely seems like the weak point of Mega Tac. One of my teammates who was there the first time I used this grip has extremely sweaty hands. When I let him check it out and he handed it back to me, the grip was slimy feeling as the other reviews have described so far. Luckily I don't sweat very much so this was not an issue for me as that slimy feeling was pretty gross, haha.

Would you consider using this overgrip?
Definitely. During the colder months when my hands are more dry, the extra tack is definitely welcome. So far, the grip seems to last pretty long so I may even be able to get through the winter months with the two remaining grips in this pack. I think I have about 45 of the Tourna Grips and 3 Yonex Super Graps left so I'm set for awhile. When I need to stock up again, I'll be looking to see if these are available for sale for the colder months. So far, nothing beats the feel of a fresh Tourna Grip for me.

Really nice grip. I didn't have any issues of the overgrip slipping off the handle as others have mentioned. Probably a combination of not using a leather grip (the original Yonex Synthetic grip is underneath) and I pull the grip pretty taut in general.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?) Yes, plenty of length.

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?) I found the grip to be incredibly tacky, without being slimey. It is the tackiness grip I've ever encountered. However, I did not care for the feel.

Longevity of Tackiness: The grip remained tacky throughout various sessions. As it got sweaty, the grip would get a little slick. Upon drying, the tackiness returned.

Level of sweat absorption: This is where the grip fails for me. The grip cannot handle the amount of sweat that occurs when playing at a high level in 80 degree or hotter weather.

Would you consider using this overgrip? Personally, I think it's a solid grip, but I just didn't like the feel of the extra tackiness.

List any additional thoughts on the overall performance: I was able to play with this grip outdoors and indoors in Connecticut, as well as outdoors in Florida. I had no issues with the sweat absorption/slipperiness in CT. While playing in Florida, the grip was saturated within 10 minutes. By the 45 minute mark, I could barely hold onto the racquet without it twisting in my hand. To be fair, I experienced similar issues with some of the other racquets I playtested that had tacky grips installed, though they did not get as slippery as the MegaTac.

I was impressed by the durability of the grip. I usually get some breakdown/rough spots where my thumb and forefinger meet the handle. I did not get any of this during the playtest.

Yes, the test grip was easy to apply. I did cut a taper into the grip (like Wilson Pro) before installing though. To me, it makes the grip easier to install with no wrinkles.

Yes, the overgrip was able to cover entirely the handle of my Babolat Aero Storm.

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?)

This is a very tacky overgrip. It took some time to get used to it. When switching grips initially I was very aware of the extra tackiness. After a few minutes however I got used to the grip and it was no big deal thereafter.

Longevity of Tackiness

Three sets and still tacky.

Level of sweat absorption

The Wilson Pro Preforated seems to absorb sweat a little better, but wears out (loses tack) much sooner.

Would you consider using this overgrip?

I think I could get used to this overgrip and would consider using it in the winter when I don't sweat as much and need the extra tack it provides. I currently use Tourna-Tac in the winter and this grip might be a nice replacement.

Because, they often play in Hot Humid conditions where the sweat goes out of control. so in that circumstances, dry tournagrip is the best. Super tacky grips tend to become slippery eventually so it doesn't last as long as super dry tournagrips.

As noted by others, the outer wrap or two of the roll out of the package was a little wrinkled, but it went on fine. It is a little stretchy, so it smoothed out nicely. It was a little harder than my normal grip to lay down because it was so tacky, but overall not difficult.
Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)I had no problems with the length on any of my racquets. It wasn't the longest grip I have seen and if you play with an L5 grip on an extended handle racquet, it could be a little short.
Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?) Tackiest grip I have played bar none. It took a little bit of time to adapt to it actually because it actually made changing grips a little difficult before I got used to it.
Longevity of Tackiness The tackiness actually lasted a long time if you didn't sweat too much. The first grip I played with on a pretty warm day, and it got a little slimey after about 40 minutes of play and had to switch racquets. On a cooler day, that was not a problem at all and it held up well.
Level of sweat absorption
Would you consider using this overgrip? Yes, I would consider using it especially during the upcoming indoor season where sweat isn't as big of an issue.
List any additional thoughts on the overall performance In addition to the tackiness of the grip, the durability was also actually really good for me. Like many of us, I have quite calloused hands and tend to abuse grips in those areas. The really seemed to hold up well though.

Like others have mentioned Tourna doesn’t pre-cut there grips for easier installation but I’m used to that. I kind of wish that this grip would have had a least one side cut. That way I could put it on the way I want without having to carry a scissors in my bag.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?) The grip was plenty long for the Head Graphene Pro’s I was using.

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?) The grip was very tacky as delivered. The grip was tacky, but it seemed to make my hand a little more slippery. I actually lost a break point due to the racket flying out of my hand (serve went in).

Longevity of Tackiness? The tackiness diminished a bit over time, but I was happy with how long it lasted.

Level of sweat absorption? The grip didn’t absorb sweat very well and I think that is why the racket flew out of my hand while hitting a serve. I think the sweat pooled in my hand more than normal and in turn my hand was slippery. However, my hands sweat more than normal so this might not be a problem for everyone.

Would you consider using this overgrip? I probably wouldn’t. The original Tourna Grips are thinner allowing a little more feel on the racket bevels. I also think my hands just sweat too much for this grip and I would be worried about the racket slipping out of my hands even with the extra tackiness. The original TournaGrip seems to be even tackier when it gets a little wet and that is perfect for me. It also absorbs the sweat that comes off my hands, keeping them dry. So even though I won’t be switching, I’ll still be a TournaGrip customer!

List any additional thoughts on the overall performance:I gave one of the grips to my friend and he loved it. He is currently using Yonex overgrips and after testing the the Mega Tac grips he wants to make the switch.

I usually use Solinco Wonder grip on top of Wilson Pro Hybrid. Used to use Tournatac but tried solinco and it does everything better.

Was the test grip easy to apply (any wrinkles during install, did the grip lay down nicely?) Easy to apply, no real problem whatsoever. The grip did wrinkle a bit from the turn down from the buttcap, but overall pretty smooth. Tourna does not precut BTW.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?) Grip was long enough even for the long yonex handles.

The grip was extremely tacky, even bordering on "sticky." I usually love Tac, but it was a little bit too sticky. 11/10 for tac though.

Level of sweat absorption? Like solinco, the grip doesn't absorb sweat very well. It's not problem for me since my hands don't sweat, but it could be a problem for others.

Would you consider using this overgrip? I probably wouldn't mainly due to the thinness of the grip. Solinco offers some more cushioning and even the original tournatac is relatively cushioned. This megatac is just not as thick and is the main drawback for me. I definitely appreciate the tack for sure.

It was certainly an interesting playtest from Tourna, as I've used their products for quite some time, but it just couldn't beat out solincos cushioning.

I do use overgrips on my rackets. For a while now, I have been using Wilson Pro overgrips. I've also used Tourna Grip and Gamma Supreme overgrips in the past.

This grip, like Tourna Grip isn't tapered, so I trimmed a bit to make the beginning of the grip narrower. After cutting the grip I was able to apply it without any wrinkles.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)
The grip was long enough for my Head Microgel Radical MP, so I think it should work for most other rackets.

I thought this grip had more tack than Wilson Pro overgrips. Initially the overgrip had too much tack. About an hour and a half of playing later, the tack settled to a more ideal level. I never noticed my grip slipping during my playtest.

Longevity of Tackiness
The longevity of tackiness of this grip has surprised me. At first the grip had too much tack for me, but after breaking it in, I liked it more. I played for about 4.5 hours with one grip and it’s still maintaining a decent amount of tack.

Level of sweat absorption
I can’t really comment on the level of sweat absorption, since I don’t have sweaty hands. I imagine the grip would play similar to the Wilson Pro or Gamma Supreme overgrips when wet.

Would you consider using this overgrip?
I probably won’t switch to Tourna Mega Tac, but I may try it again. I prefer the Wilson Pro Overgrip because it has an ideal amount of tack and comfort out of the package.

I thought Tourna Mega Tac was a solid grip. It had the most tack of any overgrip that I’ve used, while also being pretty durable. I would like to see how it performs on a humid summer day. Thanks again for another playtesting opportunity TW!

that is because it is so Thick. 0.81 mm ?? wow. that Is super thick.

Keep in mind that's just the measurement I could get off my Harbor Freight calipers. Going by their spec, it's accurate to .03mm - and I'm not sure I'd even trust that. Put on top of that the less-than-stellar action on them, you start to get the picture here.

less than steller action on the calipers ?? Wilson overgrip and yonex supergrap are only like 0.6 mm. so this is very thick overgrip. I like thick since they provide better cushioning than thin ones. In Dry winter time this could be a great grip.

Why can't they invent super Tac grip that will stay dry and tacky during really humid sweaty days of summer too ??

This grip has held up GREATLY now that the temperature is colder (I live in NJ)

I cannot imagine going back to Tourna Grip original, especially since I don't mind the slimy effect if I do start to sweat. I have been using the same singular overgrip for 6ish sessions now, and I feel that it the feel is way better now that it isn't as tacky as it is when fresh out of the box.

The one thing that it doesn't get that sort of... soft/velvetty feel that Wilson Pro Overgrip gets after being used for a few sessions. I absolutely hate that feeling, but this one doesn't really get it. Great grip, hopefully it gets accepted well by the community

Shame its an overlapping grip - I prefer mine to lie flat. Also never understood why Tourna don't provide a pre-cut taper at the start.

agreed on the pre cut taper... hate that especailly with this grip it is hard to get on without it bunching up
