Training camps for kids. Help or hype?

    I'm a big believer in the right training load, at the right volume, at the right time. But, the training prescription/metric is very difficult because we are all different and we are different every day.

    Are these performance training academies any good? They are cropping up everywhere. Are they good for adults too?

    When you go to NB's academy in Bradenton, Fl., should you be getting daily doses of performance training aside from the stroke instruction? (assuming the load isn't excessive)

    My suspicion is that some kids are helped by this sort of training, but that many are not. How do we know our kid will be helped? We don't, until we let them try it, but if your kid is dog slow, these performance camps may make the difference between, say, not playing college tennis and playing at a DII school.

    My view is that parents of athletes should be thinking about one of these camps, or about incorporating serious performance training principles into their child's activities. There is a ton of information available online to help. Here's one that's been around awhile:
