yeah leyton hewitt was the same... tenascious/brilliant defensive play on fast surfaces, gets rolled off the court on clay. i always associate good defence = good on clay but these two disproves that

It wasn't meant in a derogatory way, just suggesting that it's sad that other people don't know the greatness that Looney Toones was.
They hit very flat which leads to their shots losing a lot of sting once they land. Clay also requires the use of angles and hitting flat makes it harder to hit more angles consistently. Medvedev especially seems to rely on the flat, almost skidding action/penetration of his groundstrokes to gain an advantage during a rally but clay really takes that away.
Murray was another player that on paper would be good on clay but really was not as good as you would think.
Murray and Hewitt are also counter punchers who don't generate a lot of pace on their own. Clay kinda rewards you more for generating your own pace/angles (and you have time for it). Murray and Hewitt's advantages were being solid volleyers, using your pace against you and having good instincts/creativity but clay doesn't reward those skills as much.
That's why a guy like Muster did well even though he wasn't a good volleyer nor was he a "natural" like Federer.
Of course, Nadal is also a good volleyer and is creative but those skills are on top of the clay fundamentals
