I don't like it either, but the rules are rules. You can't just knock it down to a point or game penalty because it wasn't intentional. Which based on how lightly he hit it, is probably more what he deserved.

Just absolutely terrible luck. But he needs to take responsibility too, the rules are in place because something like this could happen if you're not watching what you're doing. And they need to set a precedent that this won't be tolerated instead of letting a big name get away with it.
Yeah, I get it. It just makes this tourney feel like a sham now.

It's not a joke. It's a very legit rule. You cannot injure linespeople and referees because of your inability to control your temper. Shapo almost knocked out an Umpire's eye, Nalbandian left a linesperson bleeding and Novak knocked this lady breathless. This rule is there for a reason and it must be enforced no matter what or who.

You just inadvertently proved my point. Shapovalov literally fractured an eye and the guy had a very calm and forgiving reaction. This lady will walk away with a light bruise at most but because she went apoplectic, we lose the #1 seed in the 4th round.

It's an idiotic rule.

Shapovalov hit the ball with maximum power. Henman also, point blank. Nalbandian hit the ad that was just in front of foot fault judge that gave him several FF.

Novak was careless but it's not comparable to any of those cases.
It's all the same. Varying degrees of carelessness that renders a linesperson injured. You cannot do that. Period. It does not matter if the person bled or how "serious" the injury was.

And if Serena had done the same you all would be calling for her to be banned for life.

He took a lineswomans throat out.

If they’d have let him continue why have a rulebook???
The lady got up in a few minutes, he didn’t completely disable her ability to breathe. And also I wouldn’t say ban Serena for life, I would say disqualify her. Nice bait though. I say it’s good they are following a rule and disqualified Djokovic.

Way to ruin the Open. This is a trash call. Trash. Ruined everything for a simple mistake. I dont care, they made the wrong call.
Didn't this happen last week or so? Guy didn't get DQ'd. Someone came down, got the umpire, player and person hit perspectives, then made a "call" not to DQ? Proves it's not black and white like some people are claiming.

Quite simply the correct decision was made.

I have not used this forum in a while, but some things have not changed. @Djokovic2011 you are still a level headed fair supporter. More grace than most of us on this forum

@Lleytonstation I can understand your frustration, but rules have to be followed. Also, a few minutes earlier he did the same thing, even harder, and it nearly hit a ball kid. So if he keeps doing that sort of thing which is dangerous, he has to take the punishment when it eventually hits someone.

Ever been hit directly in the throat with a tennis ball traveling 30 mph? She went down like a sack of potatoes and then struggled to breathe.

Anybody involved with tennis knew this was a default as soon as it happened. Even Goran knew, you could tell by his reaction. This is not only the right decision but I can't fathom why the heck it took that long. It was obvious, just like it was obvious when Henman, Nalbandian, Shapovalov got defaulted.

Because none of them were the dominant #1 player in the world. It may not be fair, but that makes a difference and I think it's understandable that they didn't rush to judgement and let Novak say his piece before deciding how to proceed.

You don't know that and even if that were so, it does not matter. You cannot hit a linesperson. Period. The ball hit the lady in the neck and knocked her breathless. You can't expect the lady to match up to your levels of tolerance for pain. It's unfair to judge how injured the person felt sitting in front of a screen. She was breathless and in clear discomfort.

I know I know. Just upset we dont get to see someone beat him or for him to win. The tourney loses value to me now.

I get that they were following protocol, but it kind of ruins it. There was no intent to harm so I don‘t think it warrants a DQ
While it is a harsh decision, thete is never intent in harming with these tennis players.

But it is their choice to control themselves while angry.

You're a true fan of tennis.
I admit, I'm a bit more cynical. I didn't want Djokovic to win this USO simply because I didn't want him to catch up to Nadal on the slam count. I also like Thiem, who has a great chance to win his first slam now.
If this was the first time Djokovic had done this, I'd feel very sorry for him, as it would be bad luck. However, as he's done this a few times and had some near misses, you have to seriously question his judgement.

Also, on less relevant note, what is the forum's verdict on Djokovic's shoulder? Just an impact issue or an actual problem. Will he be okay for the French in 3 weeks time?

Federer once hit the ball kid who wasn't paying attention right in the head (outside of play) and he was AIMING for the ball kid, trying to get him to catch his trick shot. It all ended with everyone laughing, including the ball kid. Unfortunately, video seems to be scrubbed off yt...

Did you watch how hard Novak hit the ball two points prior when he lost serve ?

Novak had previously justified at WTF that he was not the only player to hit balls in anger. Even today he is quoted as saying that the lady does not have to go to hospital.

Novak just needs to change. No two ways about it. Hopefully he learns.

This major was for the taking . All he had to do was step on the court .

I think he is just fine. But mentally we will see. But of course I wanted Djoker to lose more than anyone. But not like this. If he is the best he should win, but I was hoping someone would beat him. Now someone will win without having to beat the best. Not good for tennis.

He also jammed his shoulder and was getting a good fight from Pablo. Whose to say if Novak would have won the match. Who is to say he could continue to the finals with a bad shoulder if he defeated PCB.

However, this is Novak. He was going to win this without a shoulder. What a way to go.

2020 is just not the year.

He'll be fine. Look to him going far at Rome and RG because he'll have a chance to give his neck and shoulder a little break. Obviously it was nothing major so a few days off (to get his head in order) will do him some good.

He could have lost. But the fact that no one beat him and he did not withdrawal makes any winner in question.

Hitting ball as hard as possible at inanimate object few points earlier doesn't have anything to do with this incident he was defaulted for. Actually, if you believe it has, then you also have to believe that he should've been warned for that but then those aren't the rules.

I agree with the rest. He was close to accidentally hitting a linesperson with a racquet back in 2016 RG. Needs to be more careful.

Like I said just about an hour ago, victim blaming is oddly popular.
I feel like this year is all about “Victim Blaming.”
It’s so crazy. What happened to decency and logical thought process? It’s truly a shift in social consciousness and I think we all know the source of it. Year after year of victims being doubly victimized. But that is just life.

I do feel sorry for Novak. He was probably going to have 19 slams by years end. We’ll never really know

But they had to default him. You can’t just pick and choose. Not on the biggest arena of the sport.
Yea, Bedene should have been defaulted, too. But no one cared then.

I love how people are actually blaming the woman for getting hit in the throat as if she used her telekinetic powers to hit herself instead of the player

It was a well executed combo involving Roger's pharmaceutical connections and Rafa's Mallorcan 'hoo-ha' that did it...

Lol seriously? Of all the posters on this forum to come out with this reaction you were the last person I was expecting to see. Quite simply the correct decision was made. Can't understand why you have such a problem with it.

Respect for this post. Whether you like someone or not you can't hit a linesperson.

And can Novak bounce back from this? It’s a short turnover for FO.
He’s had his hands in all the pots. Starting a new association, on the phone to state officials so Manarrino could play his match right before his own.
The disaster of Atria.
To get defaulted during a historic run to get more majors than anyone. It would suck for him to get to 20 or just under and look back at this event.

Brad Gilbert cracked me up when he talked about FedFans praying something would stop Novak and Rafa from catching up to Fed.

Novak was abusing the ball today a lot, it was an unfortunate accident but novak should have controlled his mood swings. Understandable call, it ruins the tournament to some degree and makes an easy pass for the younger players to reach the final, but it is what it is.

Absolutely the right call.. Rules are rules and no player is above them. Djokovic being out actually has made this USO most interesting it has been in years
Thats a severe interpretation of what happened , officials hiding behind the rules because they have no courage to defend a controversial decision. Even Pablo was thinking about getting back on the court.

Apparently the official just held a very closed press conference. She said she saw the ball coming her way and the last thoughts through her head before being struck were: "Vamooooos Rafa!!!!!.....thump"

All joking aside, rules are rules, can't send conflicting messages out there no matter who it happened to. Easy decision, he needed to get DQ'd.

Compounded the mistake, and we all make them, by not doing the press afterwards. Not saying that would be easy but he's missed an opportunity to deal with it. He could of put his side across and make an apology to the lines woman, fans and the tournament organisers. Sadly for him it will rumble on until he does.

Would you be saying this if Serena had done the same exact thing unintentionally? And lets keep in mind Djokovic has just as ugly a history of acting out on court except now 100x worse because Serena never actually physically harmed anyone.

She's a mother.
