Travel in the US with sticks isn't a problem. The problem with sticks and international air travel is the inconsistency of security staff. Depending on their moods, it can be very different each time.
In DXB, where I've flown in and out many times without incident. Just this year, at the security, one guy decided to scrutinize my cabin luggage, which is usually the same stuff I fly through with some clothes, shoes, exercise bands, laptop, camera, stringing machine and 3 sticks in 2 bags. After making me remove every item into boxes and rescanned over, he decided to say sticks not allowed. Then I went to the Emirates rep, and he came over and said it was ok, then he decided to confiscate the exercise bands as "tools"! I just smiled and said "sure!" I flew out again with the same stuff a couple of months later, same guy, nothing! I did leave my bands in checked luggage.
