Tretorn Micro X Tennis Ball review

I received 144 Tretorn Micro X balls for a Xmas gift this year and have finally had time to give them a go.

They feel and play similar to a freshly opened can of Penn Championship xtra-duty felt balls. The only noticeable difference is the sound. They make a louder pop. The feel and size are so much the same that I cannot distinguish the difference.

For the record, I’ve also used Gamma and Penn Presureless balls. Micro X are much higher quality.

If you own a ball machine, it’s worth the extra money.

The sound definitely is different!
When I have used Tretorn Micro X balls for warm-ups people hear the sound and disgustedly throw the balls off the court. They think the balls are dead due to the sound.

Does anyone know of a source to buy a half dozen Micro-X balls rather than twelve dozen? I'd love to get a small number to test out.

I'm a big fan of the Tretorn balls for my ball machine. I got a 144 set as well and just used half of it which lasted me the whole year, and I'm going to use the next half for this year, hopefully if the parks stay open. For the longevity I get with pressureless balls for machine practice the Tretorns have been fantastic. Sure, there's nothing that can replace normal tennis balls, but my expectations for machine sessions are clear enough that I'm okay with something that is close enough that lasts me several months.

I just did a web search for "tretorn micro x tennis balls 3 ball pack" that showed a couple websites that sell 3 ball cans. The UK based "rac depot" is a trusted store that I've purchased reels from before, and interestingly, the search also yields a "wall mart" link that shows availability, but for some reason if I go to their main page and do the same search, it doesn't show up.

I might give these a try one day. Right now I have the Wilson Triniti balls. They bounce well and seem like they will hold up, but time will tell.

I use SetPoint Pulp which I bought from Spinfire USA for my Spinfire Pro 2 machine. I have found they are at least equal to and probably better than Tretorn Micro X. I find the Micro X bounces just a bit high compared to SetPoint. Both seem to last the same amount of time, which is many many months if not a year. I just bought some more SetPoint Pulp. I checked Tretorn's price to see if they were any cheaper but they are the same price and you don't get a discount if you buy more than one package. You do with SetPoint.

I tried to buy a sample pack of these. They want $12 for 3 balls, shipped. Guess I’ll stick with the Tretorn

Spinfire sells 3 packs of 72 SetPoint Pulp balls for $119 each (2 packs for $129 each). Way cheaper than Tretorn which costs $60 and $40 more respectively for the same quantity.

Who buys just 3 pressureless balls? The shipping probably costs more than the balls!

I wanted to test them before buying a large quantity

Also, Tretorns ship for $6 for 72 balls. So all the savings for the other balls is given back in shipping charges

Why not just use corny kegs and pressured balls?

I’ve tried using that plastic tube to pressurize 8 balls, but they never seem to bounce right. And regular balls get chewed up in ball machines. Tretorns seem to withstand the ball machine abuse better

Used both, spoiled by an unlimited number of pressurized balls the past five years. Still have a bucket of 96 Tretorns.........................................really backed off from using a ball machine. Too many wrecked my elbow........................................easy to pump up the spin and pace. Unrealistic

I don't know where you get your numbers, but I live in Pasadena now. Lobster is in LA. They want $12 shipping for a 1 pack, $24 for a 2 pack and $36 for a 3 pack of 72. See below right off their website. Setpoint Pulp charges less to ship plus I save $60 for a 3 pack or $20 for 2 to boot! Even if they charge more to ship where you are you still end up saving.
