Tri Level Leagues?

So this season was the first time I have heard about this league. Have been playing usta leagues on and off since 2010 and bumped up from a 3.5. Is this something other sections regularly compete for? Considering the proximity I am wondering why we don't get a crack at this every year. From a promotional video I watched I got the impression that they are in fact trying to maximize the number of adult participants that get to travel every year.

Any players have experience actually participating in the national event in Indian wells? Our team just took the district title after much drama.

It is common and has been competed in for quite a few years in a number of sections. I don't think all sections offer it, and some offer a "One Doubles" instead that is just one court of doubles at one NTRP level, and then the winners of each level form a Tri-Level team for the Invitational.

I find it very exciting, our section has it every year and all levels are highly competitive, tough to get into teams actually. I'd highly recommend trying.

TriLevel league champion in my neck of the USTA woods is a highly-sought-after title. The winners of the local TriLevel leagues battle it out at Sectionals, which offers very competitive tennis -- pitting the best of the best at each level. Teams compete hard because the Nationals held at Indian Wells during the second weekend of the ATP/WTA tour event is IMO the best Nationals event to attend. $200 fee covers the player party and tickets/parking to the pro event all weekend.

I'm kinda on the fence about Tri Level here in Norcal.
The format is 16 teams playing over the course of a single weekend, with the winning team representing Norcal at Indian Wells.
Teams are grouped into four groups of four teams, you play three round-robin matches against the other teams in your group on Fri and Sat, and then the group winners play Semis and Finals on Sunday.
Since there are 16 teams the odds of going to Indian Wells are slim, and typically the winning team is built to win (basically the top few players in each of 3.5/4.0/4.5 getting together to make a run).
In terms of the experience it kinda feels more like a NTRP tournament than a league event. I'm more of a league person myself.

Interesting. And what if more than 16 teams want to play? Is there just not enough interest for there to be local leagues prior to playoffs?

It's limited to the first 16 teams to register. And as far as I know it's always been done as a tournament format over a weekend. Don't know why there is no actual season - maybe there is no room for it on the calendar given all the other leagues, or maybe just not enough interest.

It's done as a regular league here in our local area in NC. Introduced only 3 years ago the ladies have a bunch of teams. This is the first year there have been any men's teams.

This will be my first year to do it. From what I hear in our region (south Texas) it is a one day tournament - and there may be very little competition for it.

I played on a team that went to Sectionals a year or two ago. I don't think we even had to play at match to qualify for State. At State there were only 3 teams at the 3.5-4.0-4.5 level. Everyone played each other twice and the best record went to Sectionals. I'm surprised it's not more popular around here. The team I played on was based an hour outside of Atlanta. I don't think there are any Atlanta based teams, at least there wasn't the year I played.

I played it once when i was in a new area and trying to meet new players. I had played the spring mens season and was invited to play on a tri-level in the fall so i said sure. It was the season format rather than weekend (which sounds kinda appealing to me). It was okay i guess but it didn't have as much of a team atmosphere because the mid level guys seemed to know the lower and higher guys, but the lowe and higher didnt know each other as well.

Does anyone know if it counts towards ratings (paging dr @schmke)? I hope not because it seems like it would be a sandbagger's paradise. Kinda like letting players play in multiple local leagues creating the guys that play all out on one team and manage their rating using another team. But im sure that kind of thing never happens and everyone gives 110%...

Depends on the section :) Some include Tri-Level, others don't. Mid-Atlantic does to my knowledge.

Around here, the 4.5 captains really have no interest in this, so the teams are all run by 3.5 or 4.0 captains. That makes 4.5 players, even low level 4.5s like myself, a hot commodity. It's good to be loved again once in a while. LOL.
