Triax....with bite?

So I've been testing out Triax in a 17 gauage recently and I absolutely love the feel of it - plays "poly like" but nice soft on the arm. I primarily play doubles and so far the string has lasted well so far (12 hours so far).

The only critique I have, is that I miss the "grab" that sharp poly mains gives, which gives me some confidence on slice serves and knowing I can rip through a shot.

Anyone tried Triax as a cross with a shaped poly main (knife/butter?) Or suggestions on any alternatives to try?

It might be I just need more time to get used to the lack of bite, but keen on thoughts!

Triax 17 is actually stiffer than plenty of poly's, several of which offer similar tension maintenance and of course better spin and durability. Here are some of them:

Soft, Slick Round Crosses: Yonex Poly Tour Fire (medium stiff/soft), Tier One Ghost Wire (medium soft), Wilson Revolve (medium soft), IsoSpeed Cream (soft) and Yonex Poly Tour Air (softest).
Shaped Mains: Solinco Hyper-G Soft or Tour Bite Soft, YTEX Square-X or Quadro Twist, Gamma Moto, Tier One Firewire

So many options out there. Give a few a shot, and I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Try the 1.33 or 1.38 (with the tension down 1 kg or so).

Friction scales with surface area is always true independent of geometry.

So you'll still be playing Triax, which you seem to like, but with more spin potential.

Looser mains also slide easier since they aren't as locked with the crosses.

Hi Acey, does Triax 1.33 or 1.38 gauge gives more spin ? Thanks

Theory says the 1.38 would have the most friction but if you want to change the playability & pocketing less, I'd try the 1.33 first.

Be mindful that "measurably more" doesn't always equal "noticeably more" so you may find yourself still preferring the gauge you're using now.

Thanks for your reply, will try both the gauge.

I tried Triax as a cross to Hyper-G Soft and liked the combo. One thing I founds was that you likely need to string the Triax cross at less tension than you would with a full bed of Triax at least if you are looking for snap back on the main. For instance 48 lb HGS, 50 lb Triax gave me nice spin from snapback but 50/52 did not. With Triax at 52 or above, it's pretty locked to the HGS. If I were to have my racquet strung with a full bed of Triax, 50 lbs would be too powerful with too much trampoline effect. I think this is a general problem with multis as crosses. You probably need tension to be lower than you might like for control (not to mention the inevitable knife/butter/fray) if snapback is a priority.

initially hated my v7 blade 98 16x19 strung with triax 1.28/poly tour air 1.25 hybrid strung at 43/37 lbs but after letting it sit for 1-2 weeks, it felt perfect. Solid comfort and playability, quite surprised because I almost cut it out after initial impressions that it was much too stiff for me.

I tried Triax and liked it quite a bit. Godd durability for a multi. That said, I liked RPX pretty much exactly the same and it had the same or maybe slightly more durabilty. Both have more have more comfort with a slight reduction in spin and control from a full bed of poly. String about 4-5 lbs less than a traditional multi. I usually string NXT Max at 57lbs. RPX feels the same at 52-53lbs.

I'm really interested in this topic of RPX vs. Triax. There are claims in TT they play/feel almost the same. RPX is quite a bit cheaper. Specially if using just as a cross, $20 a pack really seems too high. Can anyone comment on differences between these two in hybrid and as a full bed.

Actually I just noticed TW has dropped price of some finer gauges of Triax (probably to match what was on Amazon for a while) to $17.95. I imagine this may be short lived pricing.
