True Fans of Tennis Can Only be Disappointed by Events

Regardless of your views of vaccination, the political circus and the depth of your fanboyism, it is a massive shame the current World No 1 and defending champion will not be there to compete.

This unfortunate episode has at least revealed who on this forum actually is interested in tennis versus posters overwhelmed by excessive fanboyism and the minutiae of every changing Covid compliance rules and regulations.

It won’t be the same and it will be a hollow victory for whoever wins it. Personally I would like Zverev to win and see good runs from Sinner and Alcaraz.

It‘s a very flat feeling, but hopefully the next fortnight of tennis is entertaining and the competing players put on a good show.

Just not the same without Djokovic being there. First AO absence since 2004.

I'm not a fan of djokovic the person or djokovic the tennis player. His tennis style of extreme defence is not my cup of tea. Does that make me not a tennis fan?

Personally I think the regular tennis fan is big 3 to move on and a new gen to take over. IT's always about the next big thing.

All trolling aside (the mods have woken up), I do actually feel really bad for Novak.

The Australian government should have taken the the original court ruling on the chin, and allowed him to compete.

I would have liked to see him play, the Aussies have handed this badly, but in the end, Djokovic is responsible for his predicament. He should have never been allowed in the country in the first place.

I'm sad today for several reasons. I'm not sad Djokovic was expelled from Australia. While handled poorly, it was the right decision. But I am also sad for Novak the man and his true tennis fans (antivaxxer groupies, not so much).

Novak himself has some difficult decisions going forward. People keep saying he's strong, and in many ways he certainly is. But he's also human. This has to be a terrible blow to him, both in tennis terms, and losing much of the love he so dearly craves. I'm also sad for his true tennis fans who love his game and looked forward to watching him play, and perhaps winning. This AO won't be the same to you. But he'll be back at other majors and probably the AO too.

I'm also sad to see the level of unbridled vitriol and mind-numbing stupidity some have posted here recently. From out and out violence, to bare racism and of course the endless antivax spew of ignorance. This has been very disappointing to see. But unfortunately it's our current world.

Will this be a hollow victory for the winner? Of course not. In terms of tennis it won't be much different from a slam where the defending champ can't compete because of injury. Except Novak is not injured. He could have avoided this entire fiasco by getting a little, painless jab. Or two. He should have taken one for his team. Not only he will suffer.

I am so looking forward to later today when play starts. Hopefully every other word won't be about this fiasco. Of course there is a mute button and an 'ignore' list.
