To be fair, Wilson and Luxilon are joined at the hip, so anything else would have to come out of his own pocket. I recall Wilson not really liking anything but a red stencil on their racquets, and therefore no full bed of black strings is usually seen on Wilson endorsees. Not sure if it has changed or if Wilson can make an exemption for the Greek.

To be fair, I’m pretty certain he can afford 5-7 reels of whatever he wants. Not that he’d have to pay anything close to what us hacks pay…if he’d have to pay anything at all.

I was always amused that VS refused to give their natural gut strings to any pros and made them all pay full retail price, including Pete Sampras.

Just saw the black strings on the ATP Finals IG account story. I’m really curious to what he changed to because Luxilon Smart is still very stiff and it is erratic from what I’ve heard. So can’t imagine it is that.
Why did Pete have their stencil if he had to pay?

Many pros with racquet deals use other brands' strings. Djoker uses Babolat and Luxilon in his Heads. But Sissy might be testing Relvolve black.

He had ofcourse the racquet brand's (Wilson) stencil, just like everybody else. VS is made by Babolat.

I am watching Pete play Tod Martin on the tennis channel (Championship at the Palasades) - I wonder what's with his racket? It looks like a Wilson Nsix-one, but it it looks like it has a Babolat stencil on it? I guess he ould have his wilson strung up with Babolat string maybe.

He’s probably looking for free power but still retain the similar impact feel. He really can’t stray too far and make a sudden change to a gut. The impact feel is so different, it would be too risky at this stage of his career.

In his book, he said he purchased it with his own money. That's what I'm going off.
He may have before he had sponsors, but he was clearly getting paid to use it at the point he was using the VS stencil.
Heck, players in the 70's had VS stencils, that means "no pay".
BUT, maybe Pete payed out of principle........he was making millions.

Just was answering the question: he's not restricted to it, he'd just have to pay for it. The black string/red W stencil part is a bit more of an issue if it's (still?) true. Haven't seen or tried to put a red stencil on a gut/black poly hybrid...

That's what a Wilson employee told me some years back. But when the Wilson employee told me that RPM Blast had just been introduced.
Just because Wilson's partner Luxilon has strings that won't work with red isn't a reason, IMHO, for Wilson not to require that their sponsored players use red. Most of their sponsored players probably use ALU or 4G, and they might suggest anyway to their sponsored players that they use a string that happens to work with red.
