Tsitsipas on Natural Gut

If everyone quit eating beef and using bovine products, all the cows would be slaughtered and their carcasses would be dumped in holes in the ground. Why in the world would people feed them, tend to them then, and give them medical attention?
If you just left them roam, they would starve to death and their bodies would create a great public health hazard.

I am not surprised Tsitsipas is from the pro-animal cruelty camp. He is just trying to distract us from the fact that the hair products for his own perm job are tested on Elpacas.

As an aside, I don’t believe Djoker practices veganism. His plant based diet is equivalent to being vegan, but dietary approach and life philosophy aren’t the same thing. I’ll bet he’ll happily go back to Balkan BBQ (Ćevapi) when his playing days are done.
Novak is not vegan. He eats fish and chicken and eggs.

Well that's what happens when you've overbred an animal. FYI, I am not a vegan, just stating the obvious.

Firstly, this is silly. Cows are not slaughtered solely for the purpose of producing Natural Gut. So if Natural Gut ceased to exist, it would not save any cows from being slaughtered. Secondly, if Tsitsipas is not Vegan himself, his opinion on this issue doesn’t hold much weight.

1. do you have any figures to prove this, or is it just something that you invented in order to excuse yourself?

2. what do you think will happen with the price of meat when there will be less demand for natural gut strings, leather made products, etc. cause vegans will be ignoring such products?

let's go through economics 101 or business 101
it means that the revenues of farms will go down, cause they won't be able to sell the intestines and leather to those who process them
which means that in order to cover for the costs, they will have to increase the price of 1 kg of meat
which in turn will result in less meat being consumed, as demand supply theory says that normally with the increase of price the demand goes down
which might result in an entire spiral of less demand for more expensive meat results in those companies needing to increase the cost again to cover for their costs, till the market will hit the point of balance where whatever meat eaters pay is covering for the costs of these companies

see how you can contribute to less animals being killed?

Do I have figures to prove that cows aren’t specifically slaughtered for the production for Natural Gut? Lmao. Maybe Luxilon & Babolat have farms out in the country where they breed cows just for Federer & Djokovic:-D

And your “math” is comical. If you think the major meat producers would suffer any significant financial loss if demand for leather grips/NG was non existent, then you’re beyond deluded.

Not according to this.
Djoker Diet

He’s one of the Game Changers.
(If you’ve not watched that, it’s worth it just to see the difference in plasma sludge between plant vs animal based diet).

And no, I’m not one. Bring on the Cevapi!
It was reported in 2018 that he's eating fish and eggs as part of the recovery process post Pepe Imaz period. Even Vajda said so in few interviews. But now it seems he's back to not eating animal products. He's not vegan tho, if he wears animal products or uses natural gut.

I'm not eating meat myself, 5 years now. Only drink yogurt and some cheese once in a blue moon. I'm really enjoying it.

I thought he was entirely plant based atm but I’m not 100%. Either way, still does more for animals & the environment than Tsitsipas.

Disagree. I haven’t ate meat or dairy in 8 yrs, I follow a completely plant based diet. However, I do wear clothing that isn’t Vegan. There is currently no decent substitute for leather dress shoes & wool suits. I try to buy quality products that last me a long time so I don’t have to repurchase frequently.

Yes, the most strict, holier than thou Vegans would not consider me one. But they’re zealots & ultimately detrimental to the cause they claim to care about.

I've always wondered if cows are specifically slaughtered for leather, not just as a by product of meat production. I'd have to imagine some are.

Yeah, vegans runt he gamut. For many it has nothing to with the well-being of animals. It's health-related or just a preference.

I suppose it’s impossible to say conclusively “no cow has ever been slaughtered specifically for leather.” But the overwhelming majority of leather goods are made from byproducts of meat production.

Someone above mentioned along the line that cattle are not farmed and killed to sustain a few reels of gut. The gut is just a by product of meat and diary consumption. Tittypas really needs to wonder the dessert a few mores years for everyone's benefits.

According to TW's page on Where Natural Gut comes from

"So, if you are going to manufacture natural gut tennis string you need a good source of beef serosa - which the food industry provides."...not the other way around.

Yep, I saw that, just posted the quote to clear any doubts. There are a lot of misconceptions going around about veganism and it's better to do some quick research instead of posting false information.

When it comes to Tsitsipas there are two options:
He could be talking about Djokovic, as he could think that Novak calls himself vegan and he proudly noticed that he uses gut as well (forgot about the leather grip in this case), so he wanted to make an observation. Stefanos is definitely not the brightest player around, but this would be a pinnacle of his research abilities.

There is however a chance that he was thinking about someone else, but the only other male player who doesn't eat meat or dairy that I know of is Kyrgios and he uses poly (has a leather grip though).

What are your thoughts on some of the higher quality microfibre dress shoes?

I've found in the last 5-6 years that the market has exploded with many more options available now.

Related to tennis, I think the hardest area of tennis to find synthetic options is in the balls, with most of the higher quality balls all using a wool-derived substrate.

Would be interesting to see what changes occur there over the next 20 years.

I don't agree with some's view that it's silly to boycott the product just because we couldn't root out the practice as a whole. This is like saying we shouldn't use less paper just because we couldn't stop trees from getting chopped down.

We all know this but we still have to start small. Start by doing it yourself and start influencing others, maybe eventually the lowered demand can change things on a grander scale. We shouldn't just give up on our faiths because we're minuscule.

And mind you even if we can't change the trend in the end not practicing our beliefs by using slaughtered animal products is still hypocrisy.

I guess it’s just because I’m new here, but I don’t understand why everyone is bashing him. Using Natural Gut goes strongly against veganism. It would be the same as driving around in a car with leather interior. Either you use animals as tools and resources or you don’t. It’s not right or wrong it is what it is.

It's more a case of playing the man and not the ball. Tsitsipas says a lot of really dumb things, so people are just waiting for him to do it again. Similar to Kyrgios, who says and does a lot of stupid things. He also gets smashed when he says something that is true.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of the microfiber shoes-I don’t think they look great or hold up well. And nowadays you can get a high quality pair of leather dress shoes for ~$200 & they’ll last you a while if you care for them.

In regards to tennis, apart from NG, balls & leather grips, most other products seem ok (overgrips, shoes, racquets).

I think that most athletes should heed this famous quote before they post on social media late at night.

Better to Remain Silent and Be Thought a Fool than to Speak and Remove All Doubt

I actually agree with that sentiment. Stress and fear are far more toxic than charred meat.

Stress surely is. As for "charred meat" it depends on what you mean. There are so many variables to these potential carcinogens and to what extent and under what circumstances they form, that the entire thing becomes a rather speculative exercise. Coal or wood fired grill is a completely different matter than plate/pan grilled, the quality of meat, fats etc matter, expertise in cooking and preference for end result matter etc. If you are eating McDonalds you shouldn't care about whether the "patty" is grilled or made sous vide (yes, I know they don't do that). Buy high quality meat, treat it as little as possible, oven finish it and you are as safe as eating plants.

Unless it's for health reasons, I find veganism completely stupid. It's a classic example of human emotion getting in the way. We are biologically designed to eat meat. We have canine teeth for the purpose of tearing meat apart before chewing. If we were not the dominant species on earth we'd be some creature's food on the regular as well.

it doesn't matter if they are killed specifically for this or not.
what matters is the revenue resulted from selling leather and intestines to 3rd party industries.

now on the topic of business, well I hope that you are a kido with no mature life experience, otherwise this is a very sad situation (for you).
the revenue of those companies is made of:
revenue from selling meat
revenue from selling leather
revenue from selling intestines and whatever else

let's assume that the sales of leather and intestines equals to 2% of their revenue.
if you think that any business will simply close their eyes on losing 2% of revenues, well, I'd suggest you to never try and open your own business.
that's not to say that shareholders of those businesses might see those 2% in a very different light, as for them it might be 20% or 50% of the company profit, and when the CEO will come to inform them that "hey, we lost x% of profit, but don't worry, it's just peanuts" I hope that I don't need to explain to you what will happen with that CEO afterwards.

Being vegan isn't just about not killing an animal - it's about taking advantage of animal suffering. So natural gut goes against the principles of veganism regardless that the animals were raised for another purpose.

I get Tsitsipas' point, I really do, and if you are a vegan for ethical reasons (eg exploitation of animal labour and suffering, or for climate change / environmental reasons), then natural gut should be a no-go.

What Tsitsipas fails to mention is that tennis balls aren't vegan either. The felt is partially woollen so they aren't vegan at all, but in tournaments that's hardly within his control unless he starts campaigning for eco-friendly synthetic alternatives.

I am sure if he found out that poly production wasn’t good for the environment he would switch rolled hemp for string.
If he really wants to get environmental, cows are one of the largest producers of methane, which traps 28x more heat than CO2, and are responsible for 10% of greenhouse gas emissions annually. So is it better to discourage products that cull greenhouse gas production given climate change affects the entire planet, or should natural gut users be praised for the amount of emissions they’ve saved is from? Quite the ethical conundrum for our little philosopher, I like to refer to him as Plagiarizotle for all of the borrowed quotes.

And I love how these tennis pros are all about the planet and continue to a) get their rackets put in bags, and b) use plastic (I know they're polyester) strings that don't degrade and wind up in a trash heap somewhere. Not only do they use these strings, they get restrung 10000 times more than a rec player creating even more waste that never goes away. At least with gut it's biodegradable.
