the way he was clutching that bag...it was hilarious and obvious....

come on stef, we thought you were better than this. I mean is his base game so fragile that he needs coaching tips mid-match? Pathetic
Stop slandering him. What do you mean "the way he was clutching that bag". What does that mean?

He had the bag slung over his shoulder. Perhaps it had his nutrition bars or Scoobie Snacks in it?

"Customized Rules"-the umpire truly tailored some standards and so Tsitsi is correct no matter what you all feel!

Zverev's acccusations have merits as Tsitsi's frequency of such bathroom breaks is worrying and trully bad for the inept ATP officials

Dear Son,
Get the ball over the net.
Get your first serve in.
Keep it deep.
- - Aposotlos
Unfortunately, Stefanos forgot to follow up on that first serve in the third set when leading 5:4 and serving for his match. That 10th game of the third set was so brutal for the Greek (and his dad to watch). I mean every first serve in that game was botched (aside his forehands). Perhaps, the third set was long after that bathroom break (in between first and second sets) and after Stefanos was denied his second bathroom break before his unfortunate third set.

Clearly the rule is currently a joke...
The bathroom break rule has been a joke for a few years now and not just for the cell phones but the time allowed. The ATP officials/their umpires are complaisant and awkward which has shown in the Tsitsi-Zverev match too.

The only way to fix the bathroom break issue is to mandate strictly the 5 minutes (players need to change clothes and/or p*ss and sh*t). Any stadium that's unable to provide satisfactory distance bathrooms for courts shall create such closeby toilets and security for them. Jammers for electronic devices should be in all those bathrooms so that players wouldn't be able to communicate with anyone there. This is the message to the CEO of ATP house!

Zverev is complaining that Tsi is going off to use the phone.Ump asks Zed, "What do you want me to do?" . Can't make out what Zed says. Something about "linesman".

What exactly does Zed want the ump to do?

I think he’s complaining because he took his bag with his phone in the bag and everything. The umpire said he’s being escorted with a linesman, but Zverev said that a linesperson isn’t going to be in the toilet with him watching him **** (which is true).

Honestly it’s such an easy rule change, players shouldn’t be allowed to carry phones or communication devices off the court during a match. Genuinely so simple.

Players should not be allowed to bring phones onto the court in the first place.
But as Patrick Moratgolou said, coaching is an open secret.
ATP has no interest in enforcing this rule. This is all security theatre.

What about inspecting the bag before he leaves the court? And how simple would that be!

Zed complained he was walking off with phone in bag. Ump said he is powerless to do anything. You will need to cite the rule that allows an ump to search a player's purse.

If there is a rule against coaching then he can rely on that rule to inspect the bag.

They say "feverishly texting" but the guy hit like 4 buttons, and not even all near the keyboard. I think he's probably guilty too, based on the recent history, but there's no real proof. Players shouldn't be allowed to have phones on the court. Maybe coaches shouldn't be allowed courtside, or in a place where the players can see them.

The fact is that if there is a rule against coaching then the people who regulate umpires should authorise them to control phones.

So oerhaps they don't need a separate rule, but a new interpretaion of the current rule against coaching.

If they do need a new rule, then get one.

This interpretation or new rule could allow for inspection or merely allow the umpire to witness the player leaving authorised phone/s on court.

In any event, the umpire could have asked Tsitsipas whether he was taking the phone off court and reminded him of the rule against coaching.

Maybe the shame would be enough. Or maybe Tsitsipas could have asserted he need some pornhub time.

Ump has no authority to inspect the bag. He can only rule on what he is witness to.

I like your facts
All I'm suggesting is that perhaps they don't need a separate rule, but a new interpretaion of the current rule against coaching.
I like your conviction.

Perhaps they need a new interpreter to interpret the laws so that noooobody gets nailed for something.

Bart, sorry man! All that's necessary is the 5 minutes rule in the cr*pper with no bag but transparent plastic with a pair of socks, diaper an' a teeshirt :)

This is ridiculous. No one has any evidence. Apostolos using his phone - so he must be coaching?

Why not just ban the electronic devices? End of story.

@StringGuruMRT I had an experience with a kid's coach and a parent (three people in one toilet) screaming at each other during the break. In the end, that poor kid lost his third set to a boy from my tennis camp who was not as good at all. So, I think such breaks may be productive as much as unproductive. But I don't think Tsitsi will learn from those bathroom breaks that ended in his losses.

What aggravated me was that he tried to do it again after the second set! He just grabbed his bag, and headed off like, “time for the second round of coaching!”

That truly was despicable from a top professional in tennis, but hopefully enlightening for the umpire and his handlers who do not seem to have learnt their lessons.
