Turning down the "hackers" at my club

It's only a waste of time if you make it a waste. Just agree to hit with whoever asks, and then use it as an opportunity to practice either being as aggressive as possible or as consistent as possible. If you ever reach a level where the "hackers" can't win a single point against you and are flat out humiliated, they'll probably stop asking to hit. Until then, you can still improve by playing with them.

Agree with this. My wife started playing about 18 months ago. We like to got out and hit against each other. While it's not competitive I force myself to play out of position. Maybe go to the net more than I normally would in singles. I use it as a chance to work on my technique and placing the ball in certain spots.

In my experience at tennis, I've NEVER seen a 4.5 willingly hit with 4.0's or 3.5's, and never ever seen a 5.0 willingly hit with 4.5's or 4.0's, ever.

^^So in tennis, people only want to hit with someone better. So everytime you see two people hitting on a court, one of them is upset over the situation. :)

It's like tennis ladders. In a typical year, no matches are played.

I'm 5.0 and hit with 4.5s all the time. I will occasionally hit with a 4.0 as long as they don't lie to me in order to get me on the court. It happens a couple of times a year where someone tells me they are 4.5+, but when I check their USTA results they have a losing record at 4.0.

I"m a self rated 4.0.
There is NOTHING I can get from hitting with any USTA 3.5 player, besides wearing out my rotator cuffs and straining my bad ankles.
I can have fun hitting with most 4.0 hard hitters, a waste of time hitting with the current USTA recent bump up "4.0's".
Almost EVERY single 4.5 or 5.0 who hit's with me asks if I can hit again. A few 5.5's ask me if I"m around the courts often, but don't directly ask me to hit with them.
I don't set appointment's for tennis. The last time I did, I bailed on the practice session with GregShepard (NorCal A's No.6 then), to watch some dudes surfing at OceanBeach, SanFrancisco, documented in NewYorker Magazine, author KevinStarr.
I knew I could never get good at tennis back then (late '7

5.0 to 4.5 is not that big of a drop. In fact, if we're just playing king of the court (up to 15, no serves) I can win about 40% of the time. I hit pretty hard and deep, just not consistent enough (especially when out of position) to make the jump.

But a 4.5 to a middling 3.5 or a dinker 4.0 is a different story.
I played a friend last night because he asked me, and he was likely a low 4.0, and it was 6-1, 6-1. I basically stopped moving because I didn't have to, and that screws me up when I go back to playing high level players.

I know, I know, I should "go pro" (or is it, "wear a GoPro?") well, again, flattered, but sadly not going to happen. When I was 11 playing my first statewide tournament I played the #1 seed and it was like he was playing a different game than me. Thus ended my Wimbledon hopes ha ha.

I am fine playing with people on all skill levels, you just work on your weaknesses.

But when it's an indoor court you need to pay for, I would prefer to play with players that are not too much lower in level than myself. Of course there are exceptions like your friends, and players that can rally but can't play matches.

It's not really about arrogance or anything, moreso just that I don't want to pay for something I won't really enjoy. Again, if it's a free outdoor court, and random players, regardless of skill level, ask to join our hitting sessions or ask to play some other time, I usually agree.

I don't pay for the courts with money.
What I pay is straining an already bad rotator cuff, a twinging medial collateral, a couple of torn tendons in my ankle, and aggravating the already injured body parts.
When I'm desperate, I'll play some doubles sets with 3.5-4.0's, just to hit a few.
I think I'd rather hit on court by myself than play with most 3.5-4.0's.
I do hit with good 4.0's, most of whom USED to play at Open levels.

Hey Lee, that guy who posted 2 posts up from you seems to have a completely different experience with this sort of thing than you do:

In my experience at tennis, I've NEVER seen a 4.5 willingly hit with 4.0's or 3.5's, and never ever seen a 5.0 willingly hit with 4.5's or 4.0's, ever.

LeeD

And not contradictory.
Most 4.5's up to 5's ask me to hit again, but I never ever commit.
Most 4.5's would not choose to start out hitting with me, seeing me gimp around, knowing I play with the weekday morning crowd, meaning 3.5 to 4.0.
Every 4.5 is surprised I can not only hang, but bang out some pace keeping them off balance at times, and miss at other times, of course. No, I can't cover alley to alley. But hitting is not going alley to alley, is it?
I mentioned my easy spider drill time, 20.3 seconds. MattLin is a much superior player and mover, and he posted he did 18 or so, not really trying either.
The reason the two A/Open tourney winners always ask me to hit with them is because they dont have a partner that day, and both know I"ve played doubles against them, just about even.

I feel your pain, OP. I struggle to find players to hit with, whom I can really get a good hit or match. But, I will play with lower level players just to hit some balls. Would I pay for courttime to hit with them? Depends on how badly I wanted to play. The best way to improve is to play with people better than you. But once you get to a certain level, your options might be limited.

It's all horse poop. I remember when me and my wife firs started playing. The coach would her that if she came down there and didn't see like these certain 4 people playing to turn around and go home. So I asked her if she is going to just not play tennis if these four tennis gods are not at the court. She thought about it and did as I did and just went and played tennis.

I think only a fool would think this way. I have guys lined up when I want to return heavy serves and deal with cat quick hands at the net. Then there are days when I show up and play with the other people that are at the courts. What I found is they respect me for playing with them the same way I respect the 5.0 for playing with me. At the end of the day, none of us are worth a damn as we aren't getting paid.

As I told my wife, at the end of the day, it's more social than anything. It's funny how sometimes the very people that are 3.0's that you don't want to hit with are the hiring managers at companies or could get you a good deal on Tshirts when you are having your local tourney. You never who is who on the tennis courts. It's something to think about when you don't want to play a pickup match with someone because of their so called skill level.

In my experience at tennis, I've NEVER seen a 4.5 willingly hit with 4.0's or 3.5's, and never ever seen a 5.0 willingly hit with 4.5's or 4.0's, ever.

The reality is this. most of if not all of the so called 4.5's are going nowhere. They hit a better ball than 4.0's and below but at the end of the day, they aren't going anywhere dude. In many towns they can't even play any league play for one main reason. They are scared to take an *** whipping. Scared the hackers are going to find out they got ripped. :) We had a guy here for years that was 4.5 that would line us up and sit there and play us all day long or til we got tired of losing, but he'd also rip up most of the 4.5's that stepped on the court with him. Consequently, he's seen around here as one of the better people on and off the court. Again, don't get it twisted. These are free @$$whippings he was giving out. So I don't advocate someone paying money to play some guy two levels lower, but to just to not want to hit with someone because you think you're better? Yea...it's horse poop.:)

I know for myself you better be at the very top end of 4.5. I've chewed quite a few of them up. Like I said, many of them are just walking around with the glorified title but they aren't worth a damn. As far as I'm concerned if a player isn't making enough money to sustain a descent life style, he is just as much of a hacker as the 3.0's. They are just better hackers. 5.0 my @$$.

Horse poop is a reality, and exists in this real world.

Most 5.5 are going now where, and you don't see them asking 4.5's to hit.
Heck, most 6.0's are a day late, a dollar short, and will NEVER make any money at tennis.
Still, waste of my time to hit with any weak hitting 3.5, or even weak hitting 4.0's.

It must be weird needing to start every conversation with "before I agree to share the court with you, what's your USTA rating?" Maybe everyone should be required to wear armbands with their rating clearly displayed so 4.0s don't accidentally end up hitting with 3.5s.

So...I'm just wondering, really...if the court is free and you are lets say 5.0. How is it a waste of your time to hit with 4.5? I mean neither of you are going to be signing any Nike deals right? So it's not like you are going to lose anything by hitting with someone that is not as qualified as you are.

You prove my point even more about the 6.0's. So now that we both agree that the no one is really going anywhere, what is the harm(assuming you don't have to pay for the court). I'm not suggesting you have to come out 3 of the 6 days you may play and hit with guys 2 levels lower. I forget your rating but I think I remember it being pretty high, but so what...you are a better player than probably most if not all at your courts, what are you going to do, hit on the wall all day?

You don't have to play with the 4.0's everyday but come on man. It's again not going to change your lifestyle if you played a set or two with us hackers once or twice a month. If it effects your game that badly, you might need to reassess your game. :) It's not really a hair...lol it's just it kills me for people that aren't getting a dime for their time anyway unless they are giving lessons to think they are so much more superior that they can't play a couple of sets of pick up to make someone else's day every now and then. I actually think it's funny myself.

You got a point there dude about the women, but most men that have any sense at all knows that the ratio is something like 10 to 1 most of the time. So there are plenty of them to go through and most men if they are any man at all can generally find one woman to hit with<snicker>. The same applies for tennis. It's not that you can't find other tennis folks to play with. It's just that it really isn't going to hurt your game to play with someone of a lesser rating. If your game is really what it is suppose to be, you should be able to come out...dust some guy off that is 2 levels below you and go back to your level and dust off a guy at your own level.

I think it's just an excuse again to not get your @$$ whipped. Again, hell most of them don't even play guys at their own level. They just b.s around at the park to see how many guys they can tell they don't want to play.lol

I'm sure this<guys thinking they are too good to hit with others> mostly applies to the younger guys. When you are younger you tend to think you are going some where and don't realize that you playing at the rec parks for a reason. The older ones generally understand this and will play. Lee may not be this way but I think with age you tend to change your attitude at how you view tennis.

You tend to not look so much at how much better your strokes are as much as you are grateful to be able to play.

Last summer I spent two weeks in Mesa, AZ at my father's retirement village. Every morning I played 2-3 hours of tennis with some really great people. Did my tennis improve? Maybe--I certainly learned that that guy at the net who can't move will still feather that volley for a winner if given the chance. But more importantly I had a blast. Just because my opponents could never take a game from me in singles doesn't mean we didn't enjoy each other's company. My sons who are in high school--the Junior was a state qualifier--can beat me every once in a while now. One day they'll beat me all the time. We will still enjoy playing.

The problem is that after a few months, your skills will deteriorate and then they don't appreciate all the hitting you did with them. While they will talk bad about you if you don't play with them, they won't play with you if your skills go down :)

The best thing to do is to know people you want to play with and then book the courts.

LeeD, you are wrong on this one.

I am old 4.0 now but played many years of 4.5 decades ago and willing hit with 4.0 players when I wanted a hit and no one else was around. Notice I didn't see begrudgingly hit as I was happy to get a workout.

I also currently know a guy rated 4.5 taking and last time we talked he was prepping to take his USPTA certification and he and I hit 4 or 5 times a years when we cross paths at the park. I see him hitting with 3.5 players a lot too.

I also played a guy at the park a few summers ago who was practicing to play a "money tournament" in his words. I assume this was an open level tournament. He and I hit an hour and he gave me his phone number and told me to call him anytime I wanted to hit.

So, I just gave you 3 examples where 4.5 or higher dropped down to hit with lower level guys so it does happen.

But, I will admit there is a bottom threshold where it just isn't any fun. If the lower ranked player is totally inconsistent then it isn't much fun. But, if you can hit to their strong side and they can get the ball back, you can work it into a good practice.

It depends what you're looking for. If you are looking to improve, then imo, every hitting session should have a goal or purpose. Yes you can do this with lower level players to an extent but if you're really trying to take your game to the next level, hitting below your level does little to help achieve this.

On the other hand, if you look at it like a social event or networking experience, you can have a really good time and meet some really awesome people. At my club for instance I started hitting with a guy about a level beneath me because he was around and I wanted to hit so why not. After an hour of rallying (didn't want to play games as it wouldn't be very competitve) he asked if I wanted to grab a beer. He's about fifteen years my senior, but he introduced me to a bunch of his friends who are all an awesome group of people. Now some of my closer friends regardless of age. Plus, at 25, I'm still getting my life together. These guys and gals are all doctors, architects, professional types.. They LOVE trying to give me a leg up in terms of throwing me a job opp they know of, one of the guys gave me keys to his ski condo for the winter because he never used it (this was an incredible gesture. A couple ladies enjoyed it quite a bit!). It's worth it for me to hit with them if they're below my tennis level and its worth it for them to hang out with me even though I'm below their socio-economic level. win win.

As a top of the line 4.0 in this area....absolutely. I could care less when I'm playing pickup. Hell some 3.5's have better serves than I do so who am I to not want to play with someone that is 3.0.lol there is no person her that will ever tell you that chatt_town hasn't played with them or won't play with them. I don't cancel scheduled singles matches to play with 3.0's 4.0's or anyone else for that matter, but if I show up at the courts I'm looking to play. If you are a 5.0 you will hardly ever get to play. There are very few if any leagues.

So I say the question is How does Lee get any real enjoyment out of tennis(assuming you are like 5.0). I mean how often do you really get to play. I'm curious about how 5.0's get a work out. Is it really a workout when you are hitting with the same other 5.0?

So, question becomes, would Chattown invite 3.0 players into his doubles sets?

If your game goes to hell, it's because it was going to hell anyway. Had nothing to do with the 3 or 4 times you hit with someone a level or even two beneath you.

I'm a 4.5 and occasionally (maybe two or three times a month) play social doubles night at my club, as its sometimes hard to line up players at my skill level to play on my schedule. This doubles night is fairly low level hit and giggle doubles, and no harm done, it can be fun to work on some things in my game.

The problem is now when i show up to my club hoping to run into a few guys at my level and pick up a hitting session (which happens sometimes)...instead I see guys from the social doubles night and they usually ask to hit with me, but they are pretty bad. Also, the courts are indoor and cost money by the hour. I would rather just work out.

I know when I want to play someone above my skill level I usually have to either play a tourney or pay a pro for an hour.

How do I turn these guys down and be friendly about it, they are usually pretty nice guys (and sometimes ladies), but its a waste of time and money to play with them.

Sorry if this comes across as arrogant, it's not meant that way, I'm looking for a tactful way to do it, they are smart enough to know I'm there looking for a game.
I've seen people handle this by saying, "I'm waiting for someone."

Okay...so lets talk a little further. This post proves just what I was talking about. So what is more important. Improving your rec league game or meeting people that can hook you up with jobs and Condos? You stated most of these if not all of these people are below your level of play whatever that is. The point is though no matter how high your level goes(and it can go pretty high at 25), you're basically going to playing in rec leagues just like them. So rather than turn your nose up at them because their serve is 20 mph slower than yours or they can't finish at the net the way you do, it looks like it has been very beneficial to you to hit with them....or am I wrong. :) It is win win...they obviously like you and you certainly seem to be benefiting. :) Poor Lee...he's going to continue to hit with the other two 4.5 at his courts that are also looking for jobs and looking to sale their condos and jet ski. :)

That could get real strange don't you think seeing how you've been playing at the same court for 10 years with these guys and never said a word to them for fear your massive 4.5 game would suffer.

this thread has been entertaining.

the people who won't hit with those below them... they don't see any auxiliary benefits. no biggie. it's understandable especially if the lower ranked one is bad.

I play with lower ranked players if they are cool, friendly, fun. i've had higher ranked players with whom I've stopped playing with because they were uncouth, annoying, ******s.

sure I want to improve (and it's easier to improve playing with those above you) but in the end it's about a win win for both parties.

One may be able to have an enjoyable "hit" (rally balls hit to the lower player) with another a full level apart this doesn't really apply to a doubles match. Best experience is with closely matched players. If one or two are significantly off, the enjoyment drops rapidly.

Dizz had the best answer. Be honest.

At our courts, there are a couple of USTA ranked 3.5's who try to play up as often as possible. No problem, they should.
BUT, when they get on court with 3 4.0's, their first serve is much much slower than any second serve, their forehands hit flat with 8' net clearance land in short NML ( FIGURE IT OUT ) ... and they can only resort to lobbing EVERY single ROS.
You want to play tennis with them?
I'm 4.0.

The irony of it is that I happen to know the identities of some of the norcal posters on this thread.

One of the those expressing disdain at playing with lower-rated players claims to be a 4.5, but is in reality a 4.0 with a losing record at 4.0 to boot.

Another claims to be 4.0 but is in fact a mediocre 3.5 based on his record.

Kinda funny, really.

I have a suggestion for OP.

You are not the only one facing this problem. There are other players at your level or better who have the same problem. So
try and arrange a hit with one of your preferred players before you show up at your club. Then it would be easy to turn down these people and they won't feel bad either.

To make scheduling easy create a Viber/WhatsApp group of players who are at the same level. Anyone who is interested in playing can just post to that group. This way you will not only solve your problem but you will also be popular among your 4.5/5.0 friends.

There are actually three people who have posted in this thread whose identity I know and who are claiming to be a level higher than they really are.

And then a couple more I know that are being truthful and have not misrepresented themselves.

I'm not going to name any names, in order to protect the guilty :)
