TV ratings in Europe - tennis vs golf?

Hoping someone can provide some facts here. I'm debating the popularity of tennis majors vs golf majors in certain parts of the world.

My contention:

Golf majors more popular in:
North America
Asia

Tennis majors more popular in:
South America
Eastern Europe

Unsure about: Western Europe and Australia. Anyone have facts on Western Euro and Oz, which sport gets higher TV ratings during majors?

Thanks!

I read an article a while back saying that none of Federer's major finals were even in the top 20 of the highest rated sporting events in Switzerland.

Apparently sking is the big spectator sport there.

I think it would be hard to answer your question, is there a standardized rating system for all of Europe like the Nielsen ratings here? So many diifferent countries with different cable systems, etc, how can you know what the ratings are?

And like I said in the other thread, time zones are a big factor in any ratings discussions. The NBA finals would get pretty bad ratings here if it was on at 9am like the FO & W final are here.

And 3 of the 4 majors in golf are held in the US! Of course ratings will be higher here than in Europe for golf's majors, TV times are a lot more convenient here. And that sport is more dependent on American viewers than tennis due to that.
Tiger's USO ratings are much higher than his British Open ratings due to time zone difference.

I read that Hewitt's run to the '05 AO final was among the higest rated sporting events in Australia's history.

And some of Henman's matches got some amazing number of viewers in the UK(like that Haarhuis match in '97)

Anyway does it matter? There are a number of sports in Europe & South America that are considerably more popular than either golf or tennis.

I remember stands at the FO being virtually empty for a mens QF one year when France was playing a World Cup match at the same time. wonder how this Euro tournament compares to Wimbledon as far as ratings go in the UK.

Without doubt football is the most popular sport in whole Europe.
But I am almost certain that tennis is far more popular than golf here. Too many european players and too much history. Eurosport is showing big tournaments very often, and even if ES doesn't show some major event (although the Slams are always showed on this channel) there are numerous lesser sport channels that are going to show the event. Tennis is popular in France (well, duh), the UK, Germany, it is popular in Eastern Europe, espacially now with Joker on the rise. I think tennis is also very popular in Spain.

In western Europe tennis is a much bigger deal than golf. The most important tournaments are played in the US, so the last matches (which are the most interesting) start around 9 pm and finish around 2 in the morning, so it's hard to watch

Only the Ryder Cup gets some hype when it's played in Europe, but they only play it once each two years (once every four years in Europe)

I love to watch golf (every sport really) but it's not very common, at least in Spain, where you can only watch it in specialized tv channels

I think only Uk will have good ratings-but that's not real Europe anyway..

In Serbia we do not have a golf venue, not to go any deeper. I did not know whats golf, I tought its a VW car until 10 years ago. Thats how popular it is here. And I follow sports much more than average Joe, latter I found out about Nick Faldo and Montgomery, Olazabal and all the other guys but still, tennis by far in whole Europe.

You haven't been to Ada Ciganlija lately ;) They have a driving range and 9 hole course. Not much, but it is a venue.

Cmon one 9 hole venue in whole country ? Btw how many tennis courts are there on Ada - Ive played on 6 of them. Just there, not to mention Dif and Balasevic and Kosutnjak and Partizan and few more, all within 10 mins bycicle ride for me - 50 courts at least, just here.

I was just joking, since I know about this one venue. There is no dispute what is more popular and that golf is practically nonexistent in Serbia.

Btw Tiger just won something again. So aparently if I was camping on a trip to Mercury Id be hearing it in the news these days. Whats so specific for the time we are living in is that everyone is talking about records and what not. Every sport, same story, seems like people care about the specticle more than about the sport. For me personally, If Im not playing it no big cat in this world or all of them put together will not make me watch a minute of it.
