Twitter Reacts To Epic Novak Djokovic vs Rafael Nadal Match

5-0 is the new 40-15?
Sometimes i think it is not just a coincidence, human perception of reality and how memory works makes me think that it must have triggered something inside Djokovic, not only on the side of confidence but also to work on his gameplan.

The match is on the lower end of the second tier all time slam matches. May even be top of third tier. It was great for its significance and general weirdness. But the play was sub par for stretches.

It was a great match, let down by the ending. Yep, Andy, Chrissy and others all twittered near the end of the 3rd set, which was one of the best sets they ever played.

Does anyone remember what NBC research found out? Out of hundreds of sets they had played, it was one of a very few, that had 4 breaks of serve!

For any cultural/linguistics fans out there this is a very interesting cross-section of the English language mindset and what plagues our discourse. The meaning behind fantastic and amazing doesn’t really go far enough, so the phrases “most _ I’ve ever seen”, “greatest _ ever” really any “adjective ever” are overused. I blame marketing for absolutely abusing the use of superlatives and our status obsessed culture relying on rankings, filings, objective competition.

Eastern and spanish speaking cultures don’t speak like this as much at all and are coincidentally more focused on living in the moment: evidenced by Diego/DelPo reaction compared to Roddick.

In fact I think the entire GOAT discussion is an entirely modern and western phenomenon.

I respect Chris Evert, but saying it’s the greatest match ever played is pure nonsense. I can think of about 20 matches better than this. Wasn’t even 5 sets fgs
Going by 4 set matches, from the top of my head there is RG SF 2011 and USO QF 2001 (AA vs PS) that were better.

It wasn’t great in quality except for Djokovic’s steadiness after going down 0-5 as he made only like 22 errors over 33 games (many that reached deuce) and a TB.

It was great in narrative, though, as these two greet players played for the millionth time, Nadal inbincible at RG, Nadal going for 21, Djokovic going for 19, etc. It was great in tension in that third set. But both Djokovic and especially Nadal have played, much, much better before.

It doesn't really have to be 5 sets to be a contender. Look at Sampras v Agassi USO 2001, that was the greatest match they played against each other, despite having actually played 5 sets in AO 2000, the quality though, and story telling was second to none.

Some say Federer v Djokovic RG 2011 was actually the highest quality match they ever played against each other also and that was 4 sets too.

I always say a GOAT tier match has to be 5 sets and at least 2 of the sets have to be won on epic tiebreakers

Yes, some recency bias and hype, but it was a great match. Hard to know how it ranks, but per high stakes, great hitting and a lot of drama, it's pretty high up there for me (but no, I don't have a list.)

Fair enough but the 4th set was a blowout. A 4 setter with a 4th set blowout should never be mentioned amongst the best matches ever. I honestly thought the match was garbage except for a few points in the third set. Moonballs, shanked volleys, sad overheads etc.

It was also extraordinary for stretches tho…

Sure. It was one of those matches that when it was good it was very very good and when it was bad it was horrid.

Second tier great for me. Particularly as the ending was not competitive. Second tier great is still good!

Any best of 5 sets match that ends in 4, where the 4th is a dud, shouldn't be in the conversation. Period.

Sure, there are plenty of very great 4 setters out there. But a great 4 setter with an ending like this? The AO final in 09 is (rightfully) penalized for the 5th set in conversations about the greatest matches. I think the same - and even more so - should go for this one, not least given it's only a 4 setter to begin with.

I don't think this match was 5 stars by any means. It doesn't even make the top 3 of the best Djokodal matches, those would still be AO 2012, RG 2013 and W 2018. But what it did do was tell an incredible story, and that third set was indeed something special as so much hanged in the balance there, the slam record, Rafa's perfect record in the semis, etc etc.
