Thanks for the recommendations, Allie. Think I might try the Decemberists' Picaresque and Bird's Armchair Apocrypha first. Loved Dar's take on my favorite Pink Floyd track, Comfortably Numb. And Amy sounds like Enya on speed. Good stuff. Bird kinda reminds me of Jeff Buckley.

Can you actually listen to this type of music on radio these days? If so, where? You know me - I'm a sucker for good words used wisely and well.

Also saw this album - Dark Was the Night - that looks like a solid intro to this music style. What do you think?

Let's see how this thread develops, if it does.

Screw that crap.

Listen to the album "And Justice for All" by Metallica.

Is Modest Mouse considered indie still? I know they have a record deal now, but I like those guys.

LOL. My tastes are eclectic. Or as Blackheart says, "I am Legion. For we are many."

And I prefer the Scorpions and Twisted Sister over Metallica any day. ;-)

What about Modest Mouse. They were considered Indie at one point then they got popular. Have you ever heard of those guys?

Im not sure if you get 98 rock Bmore in your neck of the woods. but they broadcast from like 7 to noon on sunday morn an all indie line up. And if you got HD Radio they have 98 rock HD3 which is indie all the time. Although just saying indie pains a rather large brush.

So i will leave this thread and let you old heads at it

I listen to tons of metal (death, doom, thrash, tech, etc.)

But i have few likes when it comes to this area.

- Iron and Wine
- The National
- City and Colour (good aquaintance with Dallas)
- Doves
- Telescreens (Chapel Hill based indie band, ex-Codeseven)
- For that matter, Codeseven

Both excellent choices. City and Colour is excellent but I cannot stand Alexisonfire - his other band.

darn it, x! another thread where i can't rack up posts. grrr. i'll never gain editing powers at this rate. yeah, andrew bird is a little like jeff buckley. except with a sense of humor. i listen to wrnr.com. it's a station out of annapolis; i don't get the signal out here in wonderland but i stream it online. in the car, i listen to satellite radio (spectrum, alt nation, & xmu). wrnr is all of those, filtered.

hollywood, i like modest mouse too. but i don't like agreeing with you; carry on with your hair metal ways, pls. :)

guaranteed good times:
  • kings of leon
  • beck
  • franz ferdinand

And the sense to NOT go for a swim in the Mississippi River at flood stage after a party. Sad story on Jeff; you should listen to his dad sometimes - Tim Buckley from the 60s. Beautiful voice; ODed at 28. What a waste.

Don't have access to any of those stations you mentioned; I'll have a listen to these bullets and let you know what I think.

You need a thread to get some credits? What happened to the food channel? Maybe you should start a thread on the shoes & apparel section - proper color coordination for the 33 percent of all males who have rod/cone imbalance. Should be a big hit. :)

I probably dated most of the medieval babes, at least in Arkansas and Memphis. LOL.

I'll listen to these, too, as soon as I can. Trying to get off my butt and head to work tomorrow, so it might be this (rainy) weekend before I can. I like this thread, though. Some pretty cool sounds here already. :)

Indie Rocks.. Here are my favorite bands:
TV on the Radio
Bon Iver
Fleet Foxes
Spoon
Stars
Islands
Cold War Kids
Silversun Pickups
RX Bandits
Ra Ra Riot
Rouge Wave
Cage the Elephant
(Just a Few of my Favs)

How about My Morning Jacket. Check out Okonokos, it's a live 2 disc from them. Weird to hear someone mention Cage the Elephant, a band I was in played some crappy little show with them like 3 years ago, can't believe they are blowing up.

you can stream the rnr online at wrnr.com. it's an honest-to-god radio station--not a satellite station.

x, you know how if i were to talk at any length about skinny jeans, dolman sleeves, or skirts cut on the bias, your eyes would glaze over...x? x! helloooo!! snap out of it! well i feel exactly the same way about men's dri-fit, climacool, heatgear athletic clothing. it all looks the same to me (boring and/or stupid), and i couldn't care less.

Xis,

given your roots, try some Wilco, Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo, and I also suggest my favorites Elliott Smith, Kathleen Edwards, & The Be Good Tanyas.

oh yeah and One Day as a Lion ! http://www.onedayasalion.org/

You and I should start a band called The Stinkin' Knees. Or to be really punk, we could call it ... The *something else* Knees.

Know Wilco and Son Volt; will look for the others. Thanks, fellow member of the Brotherhood of the Knee - you, me and Auzzie.

Just tryin' to get you some more post ops, dearie. Plum and green thoughts to you, too.

Beautiful, haunting music. Probably fits in the folk category, which is fine by me. Sounds a little like Lisa Gerrard meets Enya, in her Gaelic work.

Good stuff.

Not great, brilliant. And the Stone Roses > The Smiths imo.

Both great and not just english but from manchester. Not exactly new as smiths disbanded in the 80s and stone roses hey day was in the very late 80s early 90s.
calling stone roses better than the smiths is jusy crazy though

I do love I am the resurrection

You surprise me, and I'm not often surprised. I had you pegged as a hard rock guy, and you come up with these sterling choices. Uncle Tupelo shows considerable Steve Earle influence, I think, and Kathleen Edwards and the Tanyas remind me oh so much of the Cowboy Junkies, who used to blow me away 20 years ago or so. Good stuff.

Did you name your dog Tanya? :)

And kudos to our Maryland bro, Hollywood, for suggesting Modest Mouse. I like them, too. Cool sounds.

Do you know any bands similar to those two? I also love Oasis and Radiohead if that will help you make recommendations.

Listen to Joy Division and possibly the Charlatans and the Fall.

Good picks - from that era - Housemartins, Echo & the Bunnymen and New Order also (although more synthesizers and less guitar); from America - a little rougher but excellent nonetheless - The Replacements. .

Anyone else dig The Mountain Goats?

I've also been listening to a fair amount of Brett Dennen, Herman Dune, and M. Ward lately.

all i need right now is some Sublime/ Long Beach Dub All Stars / Burning Spear / Culture / Mighty Mighty Bosstones / Pietasters /

and some sunshine... :(

uhhh. what am i missing?? i just put that song on my 8-year old's playlist!

Really? The kinky part was for videos of some of her other songs, but the lyrics in this one might be a bit - frightening?

"The final call..."
"Russian gangsters sell the bomb..."
"The hole in the sky will open wide..."
"Burning buildings, flying glass..."
"Break out the booze..."

Well, that last one isn't too scary. You must have a mature 8-year-old.
