https://matchstat.com/tennis/h2h-odds-bets/Marin Cilic/Novak Djokovic (Head to Head)

Head to head is 13:0 in favor of Djokovic. Their most recent meeting was handily won by Novak. Very bad matchup for Cilic, but if he finds last year's open form, he has a great chance. I haven't seen anything that makes me think Cilic at last years level. Will Cilic maintain his run to defend his title? Or will the world #1 reign supreme?

Novak

Better lose to Cilic in SF than get exposed in the final if he's going to play like this

Well, if Djokovic plays anything like he did tonight, Cilic has a chance. Mac and Tirico can talk up Lopez all they want, but to win so unconvincingly against a big serve guy, hitting only ~50% of them, isn't the most optimistic sign in the world.

Still, think it'll be a higher quality match going to Djokovic in four.

I would be extremely surprised if Djokovic showed up to his semi anywhere near this form. That said, I always had thought Cilic would give Djokovic a stern test.

Serbia beats Croatia in 5 sets.

It has been the Year of the Pigeon. Why not once more???:p

I think Cilic will be spent after surviving today's marathon; maybe not so much physically except the ankle because of the two days off, but mentally he may check out against Grinderovic. Novak in 4.

He has 2 full days to recover. That won't be the problem.

Nole should take this. Cilic is a far better match up to Nole with the latter preferring to playing from the baseline and Djokovic is sure to get the better of him in those exchanges

I must say though, the Lopez match turned out harder than I thought, I was expecting a straight set win for Nole but it seems like I underestimated the Spaniard a bit

Did I not say the extra day will help? I think he will be tired mentally after the grind he went through to win today. He rebounded well last year after overcoming Simon but his next opponent wasn't Djokovic, it was Berdych...someone whom he had beaten at Wimby two months before.
13-0 will grind on him.

Djokovic will exploit Marin's movement and eventually grind him out, probably in four sets. The problem for Cilic is that he doesn't have variety to break Novak's rhythm, nor he has the Isner type of serve. All he has is pace and Djokovic loves it.

Cilic in 4. Djokovic has looked less and less convincing with every match where the level of his opponent has increased. There is absolutely no match-up issue here for Cilic, contrary to what the OP has said. This is probably the second best men's serve in the game today against the best return. All the ingredients for a blockbuster.

Form wise, it's hard to decide really. Both have been very shaky, especially Djokovic. Going for the upset though. Cilic in 4. He's won this championship before, defeating Federer in straight sets. Hopefully, he takes confidence from this fact and plays great tennis.

All federer fans praying for for Cilic to win.

some of his fan's thoughts are LOL worthy.
At this point in his Career, Roger needs all the help he can get. Not to sure, why wanting Cilic to win is "LOL worthy". A lot of Federer fans, I assume, would like Cilic more as well. The easier the path to the title the better.

Why? Do you think Federer is incapable of beating Novak? Fed fans are belittling him this way.

Imo fed is still playing A game and can produce a very competitive match against Novak or may even win it.

Fed's chances of defeating Djokovic at the USO are much lower than his chances of defeating Cilic at the USO. The higher the chance, the better. That's it. Of course, I'll still be excited for a Djokovic vs Federer final as they produce good quality matches, but having Cilic in the final would be better for Federer for obvious reasons.

Imho, a lot of fans think like this. You telling me you really wouldn't want Gasquet in the final, rather than Fed? Djokovic would still be the favourite of course, but the match would be more difficult if Federer were in the final. Unless you just really don't care about who wins the title, and just want to see a good match. But I support Federer. And he is at the tail end of his Career. So yeah, I would rather him face Cilic.

Usually I'd favor Djokovic's opponent as I want Fed to have a better chance but this time something tells me that Cilic does indeed have a chance, a small one (10-15%) but still. Djokovic has not made an impression in his last 2 matches and Cilic is playing better with each day (unnecessarily got pushed to 5 sets by Tsonga but he should be fine as there's more time for the upper half to rest).

I'm going with Djokovic in 5 sets but Cilic winning would not surprise me one bit.

I know Djokovic fans aren't good at logic, but it doesn't take a genius to know that Federer would have a better chance against Cilic than against Djokovic.

Not to turn this into a fan war but:

a) Every fanbase has bad apples. Fedal fans don't have to like Novak but they also don't have to watch all his matches all the while saying how he's boring and they'd rather be doing something else (you'd think someone is holding a gun to their head).

b) There's a difference between a genuine fan (Djokovic2011, Swordtennis, Anaconda etc.) and a guy who hangs on the Wilanders of any player who stands the best chance of beating Fed.

I'm not sure whether Federer would have a better chance against Cilic. Anyway, this isn't the question yet and here. We've seen what happened last year.

Matches Djokovic plays are always enjoyable to watch as opponents play out of their skin to get him. Win or lose, his matches are typically in contention for a match of the year.

I am rooting for a Cilic vs Anderson final. Would love to see 2 giants, with gigantic serves go at it. Would be very interesting to watch. Also Anderson has been playing some great tennis this year. Djokovic was very lucky with him at Wimby.

But all stats show that Cilic will have to dig very deep to beat Djokovic, who is without a doubt the greatest returner the game has ever seen. He has to have the ground strokes working overtime.

Was Novak that bad against Lopez (I couldn't stay up anymore)?
Lopez was good, especially midways through 4th set, where he was very agressive and moving really well around the court, having BPs and really attacking Novak with all he got. Djokovic didn't come close to Lopez' serve in the entire set, although he didn't serve as well as he did against Fog (perhaps going for even more against Novak). Djokovic solid and relaxed in the tie-break, looked very confident. Well, from my perspective, anyway. I highly appreciated Lopez' effort - the bonus of the tournament so far for me :)

surprisingly I think that fed actually will have better chances, probably not by much, against nole as opposed to cilic. anyway, I can't say who is going to win but I'm pulling for a fed/nole final so fed can finally get revenge for the wimbledon loss so c'mon nole!
