I'm enjoying the Dementieva-Stosur match so far. The groundies in this match are better than the previous men's match between Isner and Youzhny, lol.

If anyone's curious, this is the current ranking situation going into the 4th round
(if everyone's previous USO points are dropped)

***asterisks indicate the player is still in the USO draw

  • Ranking Scenarios for the USO:
  • Nadal stays #1 regardless of any scenario
  • Federer must, at the least, match Djokovic's performance if he wants to stay #2 BUT a potential semifinal meeting between the two would be a "battle for #2"
  • if Soderling wins the USO, he will be world #3
  • Unless Djokovic doesn't make it past the Quarters, then Soderling would be the world #2, in the case that he wins the USO. If Soderling can make the semi-finals, he will be the new world #4 (this will, most likely, mean he'll have to pull the upset over Federer in the quarters)
  • The Ferrer and Verdasco match could be, potentially, deciding the #8 ranking (with potential for either player to attain an even higher ranking, depending on their performance later in the tourney)
  • Youzhny has a decent chance to enter the Top 10, again, if he can reach the semifinals (would have to beat Robredo and Wawrinka/Querrey)
  • Wawrinka also has a decent chance to enter the Top 20, if he can beat Querrey. Same goes for Lopez, if he can beat Nadal.

  • .... looks like Delpo is well out of the Top 30, as are Gonzo and Stepanek.
  • Ferrero is slowly slipping in the rankings... Querrey and Fish should get into the Top 20, but it looks like Isner is out of the Top 20.

And that's the way the rankings look going into Week 2 of the US Open.

Nice post Blinky, I'm a sucker for numbers, thanks =)

I'd love to see Soderling break into that top 4, but it's going to be a tough ask since yet again he's drawn in a Fed quarter (when he's not in Fed's he seems to be in Rafa's ><)

Wawrinka back in the top 20 would be nice, he really does belong there. Monfils has pretty much lucked out and salvaged part of his year this week with such an easy draw, he's outside the top 30 in the race before this week but if he makes the quarters then he may stick up in the top 20 afterall.

Ferrer is my hero, he's played well this year and it's nice seeing an older guy getting back up there. Hats off to him.

On an unrelated matter, best british headline I've seen in regards to Murray's loss so far has been:

"Shocked and Stanned"

Need to go trawling for tabloid trash =p

Youzhny could very well pass Tsonga if he gets through Robredo. He seems a bit overranked but we can overlook that right now, as his game is a pleasure to watch.

Gasquet is back in the Top30 btw. :p

Youzhny has had a pretty solid year really, he's buoyed by his consistency in 500s I think (4 finals) and he did make the QF's at RG & Miami.

Rank 8-15 is kind of a shambles really, it's full of players who've either underperformed massively for large parts of the year, or players who've been injured for large portions of it.

It looks like a 3 horse race for the last place of the WTF. if verdasco defends his QF then he ain't got much else to defend after that.

I'm bummed Tsonga is injured and most probably without any real chances of getting in the WTF. :(

No way he makes it unless he wins a masters now or something. It sucks since he probably would have been able to coast in the way the other guys in contention for the last few spots have been playing.

I'd say next year but he's too injury prone. I just hope he makes a decent run at a few events and I can enjoy watching him play some good tennis ^^

Thanks blinky for the info. I know most of people here don't care about WTA rankings. But can somone do the WTA rankings scenario like Blinky did?
