U.S. OPEN: The Best Championship

The U.S. Open to me is the best tournament on the mens tour. If you think of it this way--It's played in the greatest city in the world, IMO. But what a spectacle that the US Open really is. Theres nothing like a night match at Armstrong or Ashe--Nothing comes close. The AO,Wimbledon have great great histories, and you take a look at the AO--and thats quite a tournament they have down under. But, the US Open is everything packed into one. I love how the tour has its own series for the US Open--everything being anticipated even more--its like the US. Open is the Western Frontier--everyone is playing all of the United States tournaments and are looking ahead to the Open. It might carry more anticipation than any other tournament. Its also the last major--so you know the players are as hyped as ever. It truly is the best Championship.

I agree, I like the USO best, but you have to know you're inviting some harsh responses by declaring it the "Best Championship."

It's unique, and it has distinguishing characteristics, which all the Slams do. As for the 5th set tiebreak, I like it. Again, it makes it unique. I wouldn't want to see it in every Slam, but why have all the Slams be the same. It puts players to a different test and a different pressure than playing it out.

For that matter, I don't understand why some fans get so enraged by 5th set tiebreaks and yet don't think it's necessary to eliminate tiebreaks in all sets. Many more matches turn on a tiebreak in sets 1-4 than are decided by a 5th set tiebreak. So, if the rationale is that players should "play it out" to avoid someone getting lucky in the tiebreak after coming all that way to get to the tiebreak, why shouldn't that apply to all sets?

Player interviews reveal it's generally their least favorite slam -- crazy scheduling that sometimes gets them off the court at 2 AM, noisy, worst amenities for players, wretched traffic if the Mets are in town next door. Night matches tend to produce lousier tennis and the USTA has a history of scheduling them to favor big-serving Americans (remember the Borg-Tanner match?) who fare better in the dimmer light. Ashe Stadium is an absurdity; the views from the upper third are worthlessly far away. (I usually get tickets for Armstrong where the intimate scale makes some sense.) And the intersection of the day and night sessions sometimes leads to night fans having to stand outside the gate for a few hours until the stadium match ends. I go at least once each year because I'm 12 miles from NYC but I think it's a poorly run cash-cow and any of the other 3 slams would be more enjoyable to attend.

The ATP World Tour Finals to me is the best tournament on the mens tour. If you think of it this way--It's played in the greatest cities in the world, IMO. Just the fact that the 5th set is a tiebreak, is the sole reason why it's the less Prestigious Slam and some of the worst crowd ever doesn't help the fact either.

The French are the worse. Cheering for Soderling against Nadal, then cheering for Federer against Soderling shows how much class and respect the French have.

The Pilot Pen tennis tournament to me is the best tournament on the mens tour. If you think of it this way--It's played in the greatest city in the world, IMO. The Tennis Channel Open to me is the best tournament on the mens tour. If you think of it this way--It's played in the greatest city in the world, IMO. But what a spectacle that the Tennis Channel Open really is. Theres nothing like a night match at that one court or that other court-I forget the names, but you know them--Nothing comes close. Gstaad, Bastad, both have great great histories, and you take a look at the Open Sabadell Atlantico--and thats quite a tournament they have. WHAT! What's that?....I'm now being told that the Tennis Channel Open hasn't taken place since 2007, as it was removed from the ATP schedule for the past 2 years. Hopefully the ATP will consider restoring this prestigious and historic event once again. The fact that it is gone is a travesty. I must now cry.
