UC Davis Athletic Cuts

Hi All,

Recently due to California's budget, a lot of UC system schools are facing budget cuts especially towards athletic departments. @ UC Davis, there are slashing athletic programs left and right, which one of the programs that's on the blocks in Men's Tennis. Although they are not the strongest or the best in their conference, they have players that have worked very hard to get to where they are and it's sad to see another Men's Tennis Program go because of something that cannot be helped by the student athletes themselves.

More importantly, aside from the Men's Tennis program, several other key sports, such as Men's Water Polo (ranked 16th nationally) are also on the chopping block. In all, the administration is considering eliminating 9 total athletic teams, which would make it the largest athletic cut in NCAA sports history.

So if possible, please support saving of the UC Davis Athletic programs here:

Also, I'm sure there are other schools facing a similar crisis and if possible we need to stop these athletic cuts from happening. For most student-athletes, this is their way of obtaining an education while continuing to strive in their respective sport.

That's really bad, I just gave some money to UCSB (class of '87) but I think they will be making lots of budget cuts as well.

Hey Fellow Gauchos! (Class 95, PhD) We made it to the Big Dance this year. One of those rare events, like total Solar Eclipse. I was there when the Thunderdome was rocking when we beat UNLV and Brian Shaw was playing.

Tell me, do you miss Freebird?

Local University here shut down their Football program. I went to the last home game and the following week, they announced that they were ending the program. Saved half the total athletic budget.

Those were the days, I left the year before we beat UNLV, but I saw Shaw play alot a couple of years before that, also a kid named Eric Mcarthur (?) who had an amazing wingspan. The founders of Freebirds split up, and one of them took the concept to Texas, where it has been very successful, there is one five minutes from my office. I wonder if they still throw tortillas after the first basket at the dome....
 
that would be really lame if Davis cuts tennis. The central valley is a hotbed of top junior talent and they should work to have a good program. Califorina is a joke with it 2/3 votes to pass a budget. Doesn't help with a gov with a 23/% approval ratings and scumbag Republicans who from the start were influenced by this campaign from out of state that they were going to say no to any spending. Counting Arnold I think only one other republican has been willing to compromise. total shame.

I remember Eric McArthur, his wingspan was like 7'5" or something huge. I don't think they are allowed to throw it anymore, the home team would be assess a technical foul or something.

You are lucky to have a Freebirds near you in Texas. Whenever I visit Cali, I try to swing up to SB, and before I leave for the OC, I would swing by Freebirds and get two To Go as I make my way down 101/405.

Sigh, those were indeed the days.

This post is a gem. Tell us where California is going to get money. From a bailout from the Fed/Obama, that's where. Arnold is displaying compromise so he can get the bailout. All of this is comforting. Wake up! California is in financial trouble for a lot of reasons starting with over the top entitlement programs. Cutting athletic programs is very unfortunate. I expect more of these cuts in California at the rate they are going.
 
Cal Poly-Pomona, NCAA Division II, is dropping mens' and women's tennis after this spring due to budget cuts.
 
I believe the rule of thumb when it comes to Entitlement is:

Programs that supports me and my lifestyle are "prudent investment in the future of all Americans, to protect and promote the American way of life. It is a sacred sacrifice that we must all pitch in to support these noble efforts".

Programs that do not support me and my lifestyle are "wasteful spending to support lazy, corrupt people and organization that weaken the moral and social fabric of America and turn us into (Communist,Socialist,Fascist,Athiest,Religious Fundamentalist, militant Liberals, Conservatives, Anarchist, etc). Take your pick.
 
I think tennis programs need to have more in-state players and less travel. By cutting expenses they have a chance.
 
If a person is set on playing college tennis, it is probably best for that person to choose a UC or school in California that does not have an existing football team.
 
I'm glad that people are chiming in since I just feel obligated to increase the awareness of the situation as I feel like that this is something that affects many other schools with athletic programs that don't have big sponsorship deals (especially in DI).

In response to some of the comments above, although Football is one of the "main" sports at UCD, it does not actually generate the revenue it needs to maintain the Football program. This is mainly due to the fact that UCD football is a NON-conference sport, meaning that they have to travel further than other conference sports in order to compete (which means increased expenditure compared to other Conference Football Teams). In addition, attendance for Football games have consistently been low (to no fault does that goes to the players), so revenue wise, the UCD Football program does not support any other sports.

So in a way, does cutting 6 - 9 other athletic programs that are Conference sports with legitimate contention for National Titles or Regional dominance make sense in this case?

More importantly, with the amount of teams being cut, what ends up happening is that for Men's Sports, even if any of the remaining teams win their conference title (ie. Big West), none of them will be able to participate in NCAA Division Championships because UC Davis will no longer have the minimum # of teams requirement to fulfill that status... So the effects of these cuts not only affect the teams involved but others that are being "left alone"...

Sad reality, but it seems to be what's going to happen.

Are tennis classes at UCD popular?

Do the coaches also teach the tennis classes?

Is the intramural tennis program active?

Does Davis have Club tennis?

How would you rate the level of intramural participation, across all sports, at UCD?
 
I can tell you based on the weather and having lived in the central valley that there should be a ton of people playing tennis in davis. Unfortunately bad government led by Arnold and do nothing republicans who he hates have really hurt the UC system and the state. We have an awful 2/3 majority thing here along with propositions where any fool can get something on the ballet and it sucks. The UCs also need reforms, bad admins.
 
UC Davis has always been considered here as the public school equivalent of Stanford (albeit one with no scholarships to get by on, until quite recently) so to see this is really hurtful.
But seeing how politicians have effed up California I'm not surprised.

Tennis classes at UCD tends to be overfilled... so I'm not sure if that answers the question appropriately.

And yes, both coaches are actively involved in teaching of these classes as they both continually need assistants to help run these classes.

For the two quarters intramural tennis is offered, it is consistently filled up with 3-4 different levels of participation (from beginners to advanced).

As for the Tennis Club, UC Davis has one of the largest club tennis programs especially on the West Coast. There are over 200 members in the Tennis Club and it was just awarded as Tennis Club of the Year by USTA's Tennis on Campus Program in 2009.

So in all, students are pretty actively involved in tennis here at UCD. That's why it's sad that the Men's Tennis Program may get cut.

Actually, I think Cal (Berkeley) was always considered the public school equivalent of Stanford, especially since they do compete in Division 1 sports against Stanford. UCD is just the little team that beat Stanford Football once (and they are still talking about it).

Years ago, the UCD students voted to impose a fee on themselves to support the Athletic Department and the Rec facilities for students. This was supposed to be a separate fund but it looks like the current administration has decided to dip into it to cover other costs on campus due to the budget situation. Not sure what the latest news on this development is, I suppose I should mosey over to the California Aggie website one of these days and catch up on it.

UCD is hosting a men's futures tennis tournament in June this year. It would be a shame for them to have to announce at that event that the program is cut, less than 10 years after they rebuilt and expanded the courts on campus.

For a small town, Davis is very active in tennis with a number of well maintained community courts scattered in pairs throughout the city, and the main complex shared between the community and the High School. They also have a pretty active community courts based club, www.davistennisclub.com

That's a tough situation. The lost of the program will mean that the rest of the student body, who showed great interest in tennis will lose out on the opportunity to learn from the tennis coaches, as well as some of the players, whom I assume may be able to serve as TA's in those tennis classes.
 
The women's teams has already been told they are safe from the cuts and good thing too because Bill Maze is a great coach and has a very strong recruiting class coming in. The men's team however most likely will be gone. I actually played for the men's team my freshman year and was given a scholarship. While I feel bad for the players who are returning next year and the incoming recruits, I must say that no one can be surprised that the program will get cut given the general lack of success. And most of this can be attributed to the coach there. This actually gives the AD a solution to the problem he has had for years now as many players have had meetings with him over the years about the coach and the problems he causes. Unfortunate situation, but very true. Most of the men's players are already talking to other schools figuring out a place to transfer to.

1. From what I have seen, there are very many people on court at the tennis classes.

2. the coaches do teach the classes

3. The IM tennis registration is always full. I think there were over 6 brackets for Men's A last time for just singles.

4. They do have club tennis. The Club has around 150-200 members and meet twice a week. There is also a Club Traveling Team which plays tournaments against other schools.

5. The IM participation is very high. There are virtually all IM sports at Davis including less common sports like field hockey, ultimate frisbee, and rugby.

I think Cal is too much of a rival to be very like Stanford. And I keep in mind that UC Davis and Stanford are in two separate universes as far as their resources and ability to field sports teams.
I base my comparison on the all around excellence of the Davis athletic program (as like Stanford's) and it's relative good academic rep (a la Stanford). Of course this is a rough comparison and Davis is like the little brother to Stanford (in my mind) while Berkeley is like the weird neighbor down the street.
 
Can sports really be saved in these situations with a petition (I'm asking honestly, not being snarky)? Or, would it take actual outside money to save the programs?
