Looks who is back for UCLA!!!

Doubles Lineup:
Giron/Sell v Hanfmann/Sarmiento
Thompson/DiGiulio v Crystal/Quiroz
Puget/McDonald v DeVroome/Johnson

UCLA takes the doubles point winning 8-7 at 2 and 8-4 at 3.

Singles is underway

#1 Clay Thompson vs. Yannick Hanfmann
#2 Marcos Giron vs. Ray Sarmiento
#3 Mackenzie McDonald vs. Roberto Quiroz
#4 Gage Brymer vs. Max de Vroome
#5 Karue Sell vs. Eric Johnson
#6 Joseph DiGiulio vs. Michael Grant

I still get the same crummy USC scoreboard I have seen all season, where the 1-3 singles names are not present due to the 1-3 doubles names still being listed. Is everyone else seeing this?

I had to refresh the screen and then they reset.

Thompson up 3-1 on 1, Quiroz up 3-0 on 3, Brymer up a break 2-1 on 4, Johnson up 3-1 on 5, DiGiulio up 2-0 on 6.

Quiroz up big on McDonald 6-0. Johnson with a 6-1 set over Sell. de Vroome up 4-2 on Brymer.

Only court UCLA leads on is 6 with DiGiulio up 5-0 on Grant.

Quiroz is at 4-3 vs. McDonald in the 3rd set. Who served first? On serve or not?

EDIT: 5-3 now for Quiroz.

6-3 in the third for DeVroome at #4, followed by the same score for Quiroz at #3.

USC wins it 4-2. They should become #1 in the rankings.

Legendary match point.

Looks like Hanfmann wasn't having any of Thompson's volley attempts today, all over them in that video.

Check out how C.Thomson the nation's #1 ,and UCLA's captain tried to cheat on set point calling a clean passing shot out and got over-ruled for the first set. I see him hamming it up and do crazy stuff but I always dismiss it for being intense . When he did that , I was very disappointed to see him try to cheat like that in front of a packed house.

Its tough to see the ball in that...even if its in, its just part of college tennis unfortunately. Guys will almost always make the call if they have the overrules to spare.

Thompson isn't the ucla captain by the way. Co-captains are Giron and Puget I believe. Will be interesting to see where puget plays singles in ojai or ncaa. USC clearly exposed that ucla does have weaknesses at the bottom of the lineup. Starting 3 freshman at ncaas likely something they want to avoid.

The Thompson call at the start was ridiculous. At least the umpire was having none of it.

The level is clearly no where approaching what you'd see if you tuned into Monte Carlo but I don't know of anyone who would possibly claim otherwise...

Remember UCLA won the double point. They usually can't win in doubles. Also Farren isn't playing either. But with that being said I'm convinced that this big USC win is all about 'home court advantage' Certain things go your way when you play in front of your home crowd cheering for you with every move .
Next week they do it again in Ojai ,it wouldn't surprise me one bit if UCLA wins there .. It's sure going be an interesting NCAA
It's not really about UCLAs bottom line up. They are solid. One deciding point here and there would have made a different outcome . I'm talking about all the matches from 1-6 even doubles . You have to really be there in person to see and feel the changes that takes place. It's a great atmosphere Nothing like college sports.

I'm not that big a fan of Conner Farren. I think he's too stiff in his movement, his baseline game is mediocre, he serves and volleys alot but he often seems a touch late on some of the volleys so they tend to sit up soft and nice for a pass. Anyway his absence doesn't harm USC much in my opinion. It's not as if his record is that great against the good players. Lost twice in straights to Brymer, lost to Steinbach, lost to Dorenbusch. His wins have come against mediocre to poor teams. Again no big loss.

Conversely I was shocked to see De Vroome's natch point shot called in. It was in but very much "college tennis out" and especially at that juncture of the match many players would call that out. So good on Brymer for being fair.

The outcome yesterday was very lineup dependent. Having Farren not in the lineup helps usc because brymer is undefeated against Farren and e. Johnson is undefeated against sell. Obviously there were a lot of factors, but the lineup change was a big advantage for the winning team

Overall I was very impressed with the sportsmanship on all courts except for Clay. Grant over ruled himself joseph made at least one bad call that was over ruled, but it wasn't intentional . Mckenzie ,Marcos and everyone else was ready to fight but very fair about their calls. Really nice to see sportsmanship is not dead . All players took off their wristband and headgear when shaking hands at the finish.

I catched about half of the doubles and a little bit of the singles...the doubles was pretty close right? Doubles #2 and 3 finished with minutes of each other.. pretty exciting... what was very interesting is that alot of people from tennis academies were there... highlights were I met Justin Gimelstob (just said Hi) and gave props to Stevie Johnson for his good work on the tour....it was a tight match!

One regular poster makes some very interesting claims

Grant has played over Wang in every big match with the 2 exceptions being the Indoor Finals against Ohio State and the home match with Baylor. Wang lost both of those in straights.
