At least one penalty shootout in each knockout round. Dramatic

Italy nearly choked this one away, especially with Jorginho's lackadaisical effort there
But alas - we couldn't capitalise

I suspect Rashford will be under fire

So many senior players and they let a teenager take the decisive penalty.

Exactly this, for all the good England have had in this tournament Southgate got the big decisions wrong, Italy made changes and changed the game and they got the big calls right.

For all the qualities of Southgate, seems like a decent man, he isn't a great manager and that came through today.

As a neutral observer, I have something to get off my chest. Deciding big games with PKs is the stupidest thing in sports. Same thing goes for shootouts in hockey. It’s like as if after two OT periods, game 3 of the NBA finals tonight were to be decided by a free throw contest. Just play golden goal (sudden death) until somebody wins.
Understandable take. It's almost like you didn't actual lose/win at football. Pens feel like a different sport.

Goalie guesses wrong on a couple of those and it's a different story. Kick vs save is as difficult to judge as champion vs weak era (lol).
I feel so sorry for goalkeepers in penalty shootouts. I mean a player can either go left, right or in the middle. It really is a lottery - how on Earth do they decide which direction to go?!

I hate the shootout but I seem to be one of the only football fans here that doesn't like it.

But I'd have thought England got away with a heist should they have won in PK's.

So the morally just outcome was achieved.

I really like both the premier league and Serie A and many of thdse players in both teams, I was very divided throughout the match here but I feel so sorry for Kane. Was a great chance for him to finally bag a huge title. :(

It's tough, but because everyone knows it's tough there's generally less pressure than for the taker. Feel way worse for the takers than the goalies because they're odds on to score (though today there were as many saved/missed as scored!) The pressure must be absolutely ridiculous.

Worst part is Saka, Sancho, and Rashford are going to be slaughtered the rest of their lives in tabloids. If they buy a car or a home British tabloids will forever label them as chokers. Their skin color doesn’t help either. British media is so cruel.

In reality, Southgate making them take pens in the first place was the real disgrace

Not really that disappointed given how the rest of the match played out, would have been the most clutch win ever if we'd pulled it out (and I wasn't expecting us to be THAT clutch anyway).

Best tennis analogy would be hitting less winners, less aces, consistently having to save BPs, and ultimately facing MPs / CPs.

I really believed after the first Italian miss and Maguire make. I figured Maguire was the most likely of the United plumbers to miss and of course he was the only one that made it.

Djokovic would have won this match for England, roflmao

Yeah I do agree the pressure must be more intense for the takers. Seriously though, what was that penalty from Rashford?! :censored: I think even I could've done a better job than that.

Slab head from down the road outscored the French wonderkid. Showed his class by scoring a penalty as well. A shame.

Congrats to Italy and to me.

Could say that about every penalty that's missed like that. Waddle, Beckham plus others. When you're trying to beat a giant goalkeeper, you try and hit it close to the side post in case they guess right so I understand why he did it. It looked super crappy because the goalie jumped the wrong way. Must be difficult with legs made of lead! Must be like Goran trying to serve out W2001 lol.
