Italy nearly choked this one away, especially with Jorginho's lackadaisical effort there

That one was on Pickford. Jorginho takes them as keeper-dependent kicks, waiting for goalie to commit and rolling it the other way. Pickford stood him out and Jorginho did a decent job in putting some mustard on it in that last split second but it's hard to whack it and place it at the last moment like this. Was nearly enough but well done Pickford.

As a neutral observer, I have something to get off my chest. Deciding big games with PKs is the stupidest thing in sports. Same thing goes for shootouts in hockey. It’s like as if after two OT periods, game 3 of the NBA finals tonight were to be decided by a free throw contest. Just play golden goal (sudden death) until somebody wins.

Or a mini home run derby to decide a tied baseball game after 11 innings. Totally ridiculous and laughable.

I feel so sorry for goalkeepers in penalty shootouts. I mean a player can either go left, right or in the middle. It really is a lottery - how on Earth do they decide which direction to go?!
this is debatable, i think there is less pressure on the goalkeepers, because the player has to score more than a goalkeeper has to catch, if the player doesn't score, then he will be more rotten (in the eyes of audience) than if the goalkeeper doesn't beat off, plus the player who hits also doesn't know where the goalkeeper will jump, and for him it's also a mystery which direction better to choose, many players say that when you approach the ball, the goalpost seems to become much smaller haha.. also a goalkeeper can also study each player before the match who, as usual, likes to hit and then use it in the match , such a small advantage, so to speak

Jeez, imagine screwing it up like this in the end. What were those 3 PKs supposed to be? They were terrible. And poor Saka should’ve NEVER take the deciding PK. I don’t care if he volunteered or whatever, he’s way too inexperienced and it was clear the pressure got to him.

im glad Italy won because they’re a great team. But from an England perspective this has to be horrible. Has to feel like Wimbledon 2019 for a Fed fan with how close they were. Lastly, poor Pickford who has been a great goalkeeper the entire match but ends up losing the shootouts even after stopping two kicks from Italy that weren’t easy to stop.

At least one penalty shootout in each knockout round. Dramatic

But alas - we couldn't capitalise

I suspect Rashford will be under fire
Why specifically him? I’ve heard other people say this as well. Is it because he’s the more experienced one so he’s expected to make it?

Wimbledon 2019 except that Italy managed to close out - they outplayed us for a large portion of the match and held the ammunition at the end. Would've been a bit of a choke if they didn't win.

Clearly Italy holds a strong mental edge over England. Right now they’re seeing ghosts.

People will be people and the penalty takers that missed will be crucified.

Where was superstar Elvis? Why did Grealish not hit a penalty? Was he hiding like Paul Ince at Euro 96? Sorry, Guvnor.

Being on for 2 minutes and then having to step up and hit a penalty in the first final for your nation in 55 years. hmmmmmmmmmm.

Basically yes - the way he missed also looked bad in context. I just think he might be the media target
However, this shouldn't detract from his work off the pitch

Ghosts of 2012?
Germany have been England's real nemesis for many years, lot of difficult losses. Italy were the better team and almost lost this match (which would have been a complete throwaway given the form they were in) but did well to regroup

What's the reason that Penalty kickers kick it low into the goal ??? It seems to be it is much more difficult for Goalie to defend if you go High and into the corner of the goal, almost impossible to block that shot at that close range. guys that had their Penalty kick blocked went low to the side and goalie guessed right and blocked it by just jumping and reaching out. Very confusing ??

Italy has been a thorn on their side throughout their history though . In top competition they have been terrible against the Italians.

what the hell rashford did miss i don't know, he was extra fresh and specially was thrown into this bolier to score in the shooutout, and he missed, unbelieveble, but he did everything right, slowly tried to kick with watching what goalie is doing but something did wrong a bit in the very end:D

I blame the manager for all 3 of the England penalty misses. I guess it makes sense when you consider his own penalty history. (ouch, I'm sorry) Trying to be too cute. No time at all for Sancho and Rashford to stretch their legs. It would have been OK if they had longer to run about.

I blame Southgate more than the United boys upon introspection (I'm a United fan so maybe I'm just trying to unscapegoat them) - but they were stiff and didn't even play in the actual match.

What the actual hell Gareth?

Then you put the 19 year old to try to save the hopes of a nation.

I think there's blame all round, in various degrees.

Southgate, obviously. Grealish and Sterling not demanding to take one? Poor from them both. Grealish is the captain of his club side for crying out loud, letting a young kid and 2 players who just came on do your job for you? Not good enough. Other players who had been on the pitch should also of put their hand up, Phillips and Shaw would have been my picks. The 3 that missed all took poor penalties at the end of the day, let's not blast them for it and we need to support them, but Sancho and Saka well inside the corner and at a comfortable height? There's no getting away from that. Credit to them for putting their hand up when more experienced players who class themselves as leaders shied away.

Massive respect to Maguire. Not just for the best penalty of the lot, the way he stood up and showed his leadership and character was fantastic. I've never been a huge fan, but he's converted me.

That's why I made my cheeky Paul Ince dig about Jack Grealish hiding.

Glad you've been converted. (y)

I missed that. I came on after the game and there were 12 pages to get through, so I just left it

Grealish is a fellow Brummie so i've got a bit of a soft spot for him, despite him being massively overhyped as a player, but yeah.. that's really not sat right with me tonight. Everyone calling for him to play more, Southgate saying have patience and your big chance will come.. then hiding away when it arrives? Nah. Bellingham can have my Brummie love from here on out

Well it might have never gotten to that point had rashford not choked on his kick. Frankly England doesn’t deserve anything for sitting back on a 1 goal lead.
Even if rashford doesn't miss you still have a 19 year old talking a penalty for the win. That's still a lot of pressure.
But I fully agree that Italy deserved the win anyway

Fully agree. They should be in for the last 10 minutes at least to get fully into the match

No, there's nothing but potential glory awaiting a goalkeeper. Even if opponent scores all five penalties it's not like he was expected to save one. But if he does save he is a hero.
There's tremendous pressure on a kicker. He is expected to score, and if he doesn't it's 100% his fault.
And despite what it looks scoring a penalty when you have to, and during the shootout you have to, is not easy task. I remember back when I was playing junior soccer penalty was easy with nothing on the line. When the coach made the rule during practice 'if you do not score you run laps up and down the hill after practice', well, then it became way way harder... Now imagine knowing the whole nation is watching

Using a shoot-out to decide a championship is like using a coin toss to decide the championship. Ridiculous.

Well, both teams had 120 minutes to prove who is better. You may as well try something else. I suppose they could play till someone scores, like in hockey. But I'm not sure if that would work in soccer. At some point neither team would attack so not to subject itself to counterattack.

The NHL has changed their overtime to include only four skaters per side. That could be tried in association football, just five players plus goaltender.

This is a very artificial solution which seems worse than a penalty shoot-out.

Teams have their specific way of playing and to halve the number would drastically alter both training and the entire sport.

In the shoot-out Italy had both the best shooters, a key skill, and the best goalkeeper, a key player, so it is by no means the case that a shoot-out is a matter of chance.

Congrats to Italy on the Euro win. The better team won. England played defensive sitting on the lead and Italy held posession and created more chances. It shouldn't have ended in an ugly penalty shootout with players missing the penalties but Italy were the better team not only in this match but throughout the tournament. I feel for the normal english supporters but in the end justice was done.
All those slogans of "its coming home" looks so tacky now. England also deserve this for their blatant diving in the SF, fans shining a laser on the denmark goalie, and denmark supporters being attacked in the streets. Take that you hooligans. Hope the pisswater you call beer keeps you occupied and keep you at bay from Italian supporters and normal people.

And tiresomely predictably the three players who missed penalties for England racially abused after the match. Disgusting.

When you tell people it's legitimate to boo a gesture that is nothing else but a stand against discrimination and racism, you embolden these racists.

It's an absolute disgrace.

Classy fans are classy. I've received racism at many of the matches I've attended in England over the years and supposedly the problems are far tamer here than in, for example, the USA. It might be a minority but damn it's a loud and sizeable minority who are racist, openly racist, especially when it comes to football fans.
