Italy nearly choked this one away, especially with Jorginho's lackadaisical effort there
Saka, 18 years old the 5th and final penalty taker for England. Hmm this decision is a bit weird.
As a neutral observer, I have something to get off my chest. Deciding big games with PKs is the stupidest thing in sports. Same thing goes for shootouts in hockey. It’s like as if after two OT periods, game 3 of the NBA finals tonight were to be decided by a free throw contest. Just play golden goal (sudden death) until somebody wins.
I think in the end the best team in the tournament won. Congratulations to Italy, they were magnificent.
I mean really you have a 19 year old taking the 5th penalty? that's on the coach...
this is debatable, i think there is less pressure on the goalkeepers, because the player has to score more than a goalkeeper has to catch, if the player doesn't score, then he will be more rotten (in the eyes of audience) than if the goalkeeper doesn't beat off, plus the player who hits also doesn't know where the goalkeeper will jump, and for him it's also a mystery which direction better to choose, many players say that when you approach the ball, the goalpost seems to become much smaller haha.. also a goalkeeper can also study each player before the match who, as usual, likes to hit and then use it in the match , such a small advantage, so to speakI feel so sorry for goalkeepers in penalty shootouts. I mean a player can either go left, right or in the middle. It really is a lottery - how on Earth do they decide which direction to go?!
Why specifically him? I’ve heard other people say this as well. Is it because he’s the more experienced one so he’s expected to make it?At least one penalty shootout in each knockout round. Dramatic

But alas - we couldn't capitalise
I suspect Rashford will be under fire
Jeez, imagine screwing it up like this in the end. What were those 3 PKs supposed to be? They were terrible. And poor Saka should’ve NEVER take the deciding PK. I don’t care if he volunteered or whatever, he’s way too inexperienced and it was clear the pressure got to him.
im glad Italy won because they’re a great team. But from an England perspective this has to be horrible. Has to feel like Wimbledon 2019 for a Fed fan with how close they were. Lastly, poor Pickford who has been a great goalkeeper the entire match but ends up losing the shootouts even after stopping two kicks from Italy that weren’t easy to stop.

Clearly Italy holds a strong mental edge over England. Right now they’re seeing ghosts.
Ghosts of 2012?
Germany have been England's real nemesis for many years, lot of difficult losses. Italy almost lost this match (which would have been a complete throwaway given the form they were in) but did well to regroup
what the hell rashford did miss i don't know, he was extra fresh and specially was thrown into this bolier to score in the shooutout, and he missed, unbelieveble, but he did everything right, slowly tried to kick with watching what goalie is doing but something did wrong a bit in the very endPeople will be people and the penalty takers that missed will be crucified.
Where was superstar Elvis? Why did Grealish not hit a penalty? Was he hiding like Paul Ince at Euro 96? Sorry, Guvnor.
Being on for 2 minutes and then having to step up and hit a penalty in the first final for your nation in 55 years. hmmmmmmmmmm.
I blame the manager for all 3 of the England penalty misses. I guess it makes sense when you consider his own penalty history. (ouch, I'm sorry) Trying to be too cute. No time at all for Sancho and Rashford to stretch their legs. It would have been OK if they had longer to run about.what the hell rashford did miss i don't know, he was extra fresh and specially was thrown into this bolier to score in the shooutout, and he missed, unbelieveble, but he did everything right, slowly tried to kick with watching what goalie is doing but something did wrong a bit in the very end
True.Sterling and Grealish not taking one doesn’t make sense. Saka should not have taken one. He’s never even taken one for Arsenal. Southgate got it wrong.

I think there's blame all round, in various degrees.
Southgate, obviously. Grealish and Sterling not demanding to take one? Poor from them both. Grealish is the captain of his club side for crying out loud, letting a young kid and 2 players who just came on do your job for you? Not good enough. Other players who had been on the pitch should also of put their hand up, Phillips and Shaw would have been my picks. The 3 that missed all took poor penalties at the end of the day, let's not blast them for it and we need to support them, but Sancho and Saka well inside the corner and at a comfortable height? There's no getting away from that. Credit to them for putting their hand up when more experienced players who class themselves as leaders shied away.
Massive respect to Maguire. Not just for the best penalty of the lot, the way he stood up and showed his leadership and character was fantastic. I've never been a huge fan, but he's converted me.
That's why I made my cheeky Paul Ince dig about Jack Grealish hiding.
Glad you've been converted.

Even if rashford doesn't miss you still have a 19 year old talking a penalty for the win. That's still a lot of pressure.Well it might have never gotten to that point had rashford not choked on his kick. Frankly England doesn’t deserve anything for sitting back on a 1 goal lead.
Fully agree. They should be in for the last 10 minutes at least to get fully into the matchI blame the manager for all 3 of the England penalty misses. No, there's nothing but potential glory awaiting a goalkeeper. Even if opponent scores all five penalties it's not like he was expected to save one. But if he does save he is a hero.I feel so sorry for goalkeepers in penalty shootouts. I mean a player can either go left, right or in the middle. Using a shoot-out to decide a championship is like using a coin toss to decide the championship. Ridiculous. No, there's nothing but potential glory awaiting a goalkeeper. Even if opponent scores all five penalties it's not like he was expected to save one. But if he does save he is a hero.
There's tremendous pressure on a kicker. He is expected to score, and if he doesn't it's 100% his fault.
And despite what it looks scoring a penalty when you have to, and during the shootout you have to, is not easy task. I remember back when I was playing junior soccer penalty was easy with nothing on the line. When the coach made the rule during practice 'if you do not score you run laps up and down the hill after practice', well, then it became way way harder... Now imagine knowing the whole nation is watching
Well, both teams had 120 minutes to prove who is better. You may as well try something else. I suppose they could play till someone scores, like in hockey. But I'm not sure if that would work in soccer. At some point neither team would attack so not to subject itself to counterattack.Using a shoot-out to decide a championship is like using a coin toss to decide the championship. Ridiculous.
In order to make it more professional, I would employ a best of five rock paper scissors session.Using a shoot-out to decide a championship is like using a coin toss to decide the championship. Ridiculous.
The NHL has changed their overtime to include only four skaters per side. That could be tried in association football, just five players plus goaltender.Well, both teams had 120 minutes to prove who is better. You may as well try something else. What do you suggest as an alternate method to conclude a draw.. Sudden death as in icehockey perhaps?Using a shoot-out to decide a championship is like using a coin toss to decide the championship. Ridiculous.
