Thank you, Captain. (y) The golden boot winner was the key player for We're Going Home. Carried us at the beginning and we never looked back.

Pickford did have a blinder, no question about it. But, I told you all, didn't I? Your football is just like your food. It’s rubbish.

I see that Gareth Southgate is putting it all on himself. This is something I do prefer from a manager. Yeah, criticising your player can have a positive effect but more often than not it goes the other way. Just ask Phil Brown.

It's all to do with Roy Keane giving the criticism about Saka taking the final penalty. He says Jack Grealish should have been up there. Grealish has come out and said that he did want to take a penalty but the gaffer was not having it.

As for the other taunts. It's just disgusting. Very sad.

He put a disclaimer to throwing Southgate under the bus. :D

They can all throw him under the bus, he'll take it well. He has managed to lead England further than they have been before in the European Championship and to a first final since you know when. He's pretty much bulletproof in the football sense. I know he has his critics but the people are after the penalty takers.

England won 3 of 10 penalty shootouts (1 WC 1 EC and 1 NL)

Being English, I quite like penalties. Once it goes that far, I know we've lost so it kind of eases me into coming to terms with it. It always happens, it's expected, we've dealt with it many times etc.. Conceding in extra time (WC Semi v Croatia) was harder to take.

I guess you still haven't come to terms with finishing runner-up in the fantasy league. Was expecting congratulations. :p Just couldn't take my eyes off your bench. It all came down to Bonucci, but I could see what you were going for. If I put Mount in the starting team then I'm pretty sure Chiellini would have been the one to miss out because I had Bonucci most of the way. It looked like you had more faith in England than I did.

If I'm not mistaken, prior to the introduction of PK shootout, there was a coin toss indeed
I think that they used replays. Certainly they did in FA Cup.
1968 European Cup final went overtime.
In 1966, they were planning to play again a few days later.

 congratulations! Those early rounds with Captain Ronaldo whilst I blindly stuck with Mbappe was where it was won, looking back. Yeah I was going all in for one team with the entire defence and keeper, going into the final behind I had to take a bit of a risk whilst you could spread the load and cover more bases I guess. I'd of still lost even if I did play Bonucci so it's not so bad. Was fun though! Added a bit of spice to the tournament.

As for penalties. I've been alive for 14 major tournaments, England have gone out 7 times on penalties I think. There's comfort in familiarity :p

The NHL has changed their overtime to include only four skaters per side. That could be tried in association football, just five players plus goaltender.
well, they still play till one team scores during playoffs.
But the main point is that soccer is not like hockey. Having 5 players+goalie on a soccer field would make it even less 'soccer-like' than penalty shootout. I'm not sure if you ever played soccer on a regular sized field - but that is _a lot_ of ground to cover for 5 players. Neither team would attack - because it would be too likely to lose a ball and have a counterattack score.

They could use replays, which is what happened in the past.
ok, come on. Like how do you logistically have an _additional match_ that you have to schedule on a moment's notice? With the number of players, coaches, staff, fans, venue, etc, etc involved?

You are talking about convenience, not sports logic.
Actually, replays can be very exciting. Prime example 1970 FA Cup, when two great teams battled through more than two regular time games. Broken up for some days to rest the players, then play another great game. It was monumental and thrilling.
I would not do that for preliminary rounds of World Cup or Eurocup, would not be possible. But for a grand finale, sure.

Exactly. It would be sort of OK to have Saka taking a second penalty (you still want the first to be rock solid to settle the team - which is why having Kane taking it was a correct decision). Even if he misses there is still a lot that can happen. But the last one - you do not leave it to such a young player. And you can see why - even though 3 players missed he is getting the most hate today, because the last one is the one people remember. At least way more than Sancho even though technically either miss was equally costly.

of course convenience needs to be taken into account. Of course theoretically they could play replay. Or two, or three. Of course it could be argued it would be _more fair_. So? It can't be done in practice because of the logistics.

It could be done for a grand finale of World Cup or Eurocup. In fact, the television revenues would just double or triple, something like that gathers momentum in public awareness and increases audience. Big money there.

Replays are impractical. They belong to an era when there was plenty of time.

And penalties do not involve any more chance than an odd bounce or rebound resulting in a goal does.

They also involve the key skills of shooting and saving, and also involve a level of tension that makes for exciting viewing.

This is a very artificial solution which seems worse than a penalty shoot-out.

Teams have their specific way of playing and to halve the number would drastically alter both training and the entire sport.

In the shoot-out Italy had both the best shooters, a key skill, and the best goalkeeper, a key player, so it is by no means the case that a shoot-out is a matter of chance.

The team of the tournament. I don't think this is my Manchester City hate or anything, but I'm not sure about Kyle Walker being in this team. I've no problem with Spinazzola being in there ahead of Shaw, he was fantastic. It was a great shame that he got injured.

There were a few options at left back (Shaw and Maehler), not so much at right back. They could probably of put two left backs in, it's not like it's an actual team that's going to play a game so

Hojbjerg was good but i'd of gone with Barella/Verratti personally.

I'd of had Ronaldo or Schick over Lukaku too.

Not sure about Hojbjerg, don't remember ever noticing him in any of the Danish games. You'd think Schick or Ronaldo should be in ahead of Lukaku too. I would say:

Donnarumma

Walker
Bonucci
Chiellini
Spinazzola

Pedri
Busquets
Barella

Chiesa
Schick
Sterling

I'd go along with Barella. He didn't get me many points, yet still looked classy. To be fair, none of my midfielders got me that many. Sterling wasn't in my team that much, although he did contribute something.

Ronaldo would definitely be in. Portugal might have only reached the r16, but he still won the golden boot, and more importantly, he took We're Going Home to the title. OK, I just had to have one final gloat. It's over, I'm back to normal now.

If Germany and Spain are such favorites to win GOLD in japan,, why did they suck so bad in eurocup ??

TOKYO OLYMPICS SOCCER ODDS
Brazil is the favorite to take home the gold for the second straight Olympics. In 2016 (Rio de Janero), the home team defeated Germany in penalty kicks to cap off one of the most thrilling Olympic soccer tournaments in history. The Brazil National Team has medaled in six of the past 10 Olympics (since 1980), but has only secured gold once. In the stretch of the past four Olympic games (since 2004), Brazil has secured three Copa America titles, including 2019.

Just behind Brazil is Spain, who also won their first and only gold medal in their home Olympics (1992 in Barcelona).

France is the third choice at DraftKings after being installed as the pre-tournament favorite to win the Euro 2020 tournament. France lost a stunner in penalty kicks at Euro 2020 to Switzerland after blowing a 3-1 second half lead in the Round of 16. France won the gold in 1984 Olympics (Los Angeles), but has failed to medal since then. Argentina stands fourth at DK after having won gold in two of the last four Olympics.

Coming in fifth is Germany, who appeared in the gold medal match at the 2016 Olympic games. Brazil and Germany were the top-two favorites for the 2016 games.

Different squads. You have to use players under 23, with 3 exceptions.

Dani Alves is back.

WOW,, so Olympic squad is more of young guns type of players...... why are they doing that ? if they do that then truely the Best team doesn't win.

It would become too much like a world cup if you were allowed to use full squads.

It has changed a bit over the years. Decades ago, it was only amateur players allowed to play at the Olympics. Pros started playing in 1984. The age limit has been active since 1992, 3 exceptions since 1996.

spain didn't suck so bad, reaching a semifinal, besides, playing overall better than italy, got knocked out just by a lottery penalty, coulda been the champs too eventually, hardly can be said they suck so bad

They played like an actor phoning it in for some games, but then gave the academy award-winning performance when they had to raise their game against Italy. Yes, they were very unlucky in that match.

did you know the fact before the final that donnarumma never lost the penalty shooutout in his career?, (4 out of 4 before the match) he even won it once against buffon, i didn't know

I might have heard it somewhere before, but it wasn't something I thought about much until the pundits started talking about it before the final shootout. Such good fortune with their goalkeepers. Going from Buffon to Donnarumma.

If I'm not mistaken, prior to the introduction of PK shootout, there was a coin toss indeed

Any game in the final tournament that was undecided by the end of the regular 90 minutes was followed by thirty minutes of extra time (two 15-minute halves). If scores were still level, a coin toss would be used in all matches but the final. If the final finished level after extra time, a replay would take place at a later date to decide the winner.

Yeah, Euro 2020 felt like a proper celebration after that long delay. I remember watching the opener between Turkey and Italy, such a strange vibe seeing a big tournament kick off without the usual buildup. The games across different countries made it feel a bit scattered, but it was still a great month of football. I had high hopes for France, but yeah… that didn’t go to plan.

Whenever I want to catch matches live these days, especially for Euros-style hype or big Champions League nights, I usually check out these ticket options through smaller platforms. More flexible pricing and easier last-minute finds.
