Ugliest and most beautiful games on tour

TeamOB

This is obviously very subjective so try not to judge or argue too much. Here are my picks:

Most Beautiful of All Time: Andre Agassi (I love clean compact strokes)
Ugliest of All Time: Fabrice Santoro (I liked him, but his game was hideous)
Most Beautiful Currently: Novak Djokovic (clean, compact, smooth, as close as it gets to Agassi)
Ugliest Currently: Bernie Tomic (FH, BH and serve are cringe-worthy)

novak's game is beautiful, except for when it's ugly.

All time Ugly game champion of the woild: jan michael gambill.
Jogo bonito:
Lew Hoad, roger Federer and ilie Nastase tie for first. RF 'wins' because of hollywood's approval of his purses and jackets.

Current jogo bonito: rf.
Current ugly gamer: not big on the technique of jack sock, francis taifoe or andreas seppi. I am giving this title to sock.

Federer, Fish, Fognini, and Berdych all have very nice looking games. I find Tsonga's strokes a bit ugly, same with Roddick's and Sock's.

I think Dimitrov, federer, and novak have the nicest looking strokes and murray tsonga and tomic have some of the worst

In my opinion, Llodra, Verdasco and Lopez have very stylish and aestetically pleasing strokes.
I never liked Tsonga nor Soderling, though.

No vote yet for Berlocq as a the ugliest game, good :)

Most beautiful: Lopez, Kohlschreiber, Federer, Youzhny, Simon, Berdych, Murray, Almagro, Baghdatis, Dodig.

Ugliest: Del Potro, Karlovic, Isner (nice looking serve though), Gulbis, Rosol, Janowicz, Delbonis (hate the forehand).

Surprised both Ivo and Isner haven't been mentioned yet :D)

Also you can say Dolgopolov's game looks ugly, even though I love watching him.

and talking about Forehand only, Gasquet, Paire and Stepanek.

Beautiful: Agassi, Djokovic, Tomic (not even a joke I really like his strokes), Dimitrov, Lopez
Ugly: Isner, Raonic, Harrison, Querrey, Tsonga, Robredo

Beautful:
Safin, Nadal, Gasquet, Youzhny, many others

Ugly:
Isner/Karlovic/Federer/Raonic, etc.

Still interesting to watch:
Dolgopolov, Santoro, Llodra, etc., even F. Mayer (interesting bordering on beautiful)

I love Florian Mayer's backhand but the rest of his game, serve and FH look weird.
I like Melzer's game and I am proud of it

I agree that Mayer’s strokes look weird, so I singled him out as “interesting bordering on beautiful”:D

Oh my – lukewarm bud lights along with hotdogs and cabbage at Penn Station in late August, here I come…

Maybe backhand. Serve, volley and movement was a ballet.

IMO all parts of JMac's game were pretty ugly. His continental groundies were hideous, the exaggerated rotation on the serve was quite ugly and his upright and handsy volleys were cringe-worthy. In my book his game is second in uglyness only to Santoro. Of course this is only my opinion. Like I said in the OP this is a very subjective discussion.

Op should define "game"- tactically, technique or both?

Tactically best Nadal and Novak

Tactically worst? (Any chokers?). Subjective. Could be Anyone. I respect every player. So no one.

Best technically? Fed. Nadal. Novak. (Novak has no weakness except Nadal. Nadal has no weakness except his injuries. Fed's weakness is nadal and novak.). So Novak.

Lastly aesthetics? Fed? Does it matter if it does not win matches?

Ah you mean not win GS finals at an insane rate like he did earlier in his career? You realize nobody can go 17-0 in GS finals.

Novak is not a weakness for Fed, age has been.

No, Nadal's tennis is just gorgeous. Who doesn't want to watch and listen to a screaming elephant jerking his arm up in a motion that looks like it should tear his shoulder on his forehand, and then try to hit his backhand like he's playing t-ball on ice. Then in between, you have 40 seconds of butt picking and ball bouncing as he glances over to Tio for some illegal coaching.

Calm down. It's still 17 > 14 as of today.

Beautiful: Safin, Nalbandian, Federer, Gasquet, Ferrero, Fognini, Dolpolgolov.
Ugly: Isner, Raonic, Robredo, Stepanek, Sock.

I dont find certain strokes to be ugly usually, since Im mostly watching the result. However, I dislike strokes and stroke patterns that are too... same. I like unique strokes and find them to be interesting, and dislike strokes that dont have an ounce of creativity.

LOL, good choices, your sig has me in splits.

"TeamOB is the Kyrgios of Talk Tennis." - The Novak Djokovic of Talk Tennis

Ugliest: Florian Mayer and anyone who needs a double hander to hit slices and drop shots with the backhand

Most beautiful: Really?

Among current players:

Ugliest: Vesely (yes, I am his fan but still..), Isner, Raonic, Karlovic.

Beautiful: Wawrinka, Federer, Djokovic, Nishikori, Haas.

Some people here are confusing unorthodox with ugly.

Look at how high that ball bounces...it's like trying to hit back a Roddick overhead smash. This is not tennis. Really shows what a joke clay court tennis really is.

Dude, what?

This ball hadn't even bounced much higher than shoulder height when Federer tried to hit it. I'd call that an average height ball bounce.

A high ball is one that kicks several feet over your head and forces you to hit a serve as a groundstroke.

Djokovic with an attractive style? Is this some kind of joke? And as close to Agassi as it gets? Davydenko is far and away closer to Agassi. And Djokovic can't hit a winner from the baseline to save himself.

All people (or should I say normal human being) dont think like Ocean Drive. Your statement is a joke.

An attractive style to me, encompasses not only technical fluidity but also intent. Djokovic is a brick wall. Creative is not a word synonymous with his tennis. Attacking tennis is important to what I find "beautiful". There is nothing beautiful about watching an opponent make an error.

Then there's this...

It's up to his head off a regular ground stroke. That's not tennis.

Only an overhead smash, or a mishit that sails and lands in, or really high lob would bounce over his head and force him to hit a serve.

LOL this match was not against Nadal if this is what you are trying to say.
Happy to know that Nalbandian = not tennis

edit: My mistake, it's a match against Montanes you clown.

Djokovic's game style is pretty much a more modern, more mobile version of Agassi. I like Davydenko's game too, but his strokes are a bit too mechanical for my liking. Yes, he hits the ball amazingly clean, but his strokes are not nearly as fluid as Nole's or Andre's. They just seem to have some weird hitches or pauses in them. Anyways, this is a thread about aesthetics and aesthetics is mainly a matter of opinion. There is no real objective truth to it. If you think Djokovic's game is ugly, I respect your opinion.
