Ugliest moment of tennis

Never knew about that crip dance on Wimbledon's hallowed turf. She really can be disgusting sometimes. Bullying probably the best female umpire, and making an unprovoked insult to Sharapova about Dimitrov, not to mention the worst verbal abuse/threat I have ever seen on a tennis court, which she never properly apologised for.

So in a sport where there has been:

A stabbing of a player during a match by a fan
An empire being blasted in the eye by an errant ball
Multiple cases of personal insults during matches
A player kicking a linesman
A player throwing a racquet and hitting a ballkid
A player hitting a ballkid with a hard hit ball
A player spitting at another during a changeover
Slurs said to players by fans at Fed/Davis Cup matches
A player choking another after a match
etc, etc, etc,

You think the worse thing to happen is a bad joke taken a step or two farther than it should've been during a match? That's not even the worst thing Andre has done in tennis.

I'm not even sure that Agassi suggesting Sampras is close to a dollar was more offensive than Sampras mocking Agassi's pigeon toed walk.

Doesn't mean a person is promoting gang violence or paying homage to the crips. People halfway around the world do the dance yet have no idea it originates from the crips. You regularly see professional dancers do it.

And since when are dance moves limited to different groups or different ethnicities. If that was the case then people all around the world should stop doing dance moves.

The logic of some people is astounding
Can you be any more stupid? She's from south central and played dumb when they asked her about it, with a huge smirk on her face. It's called the Crip Dance ffs, of course it pays homage to them. Wake up.

Benoite Paire is awful the way he rants to himself and his team in French. Constantly talks crap about his opponents during the match. In Washington a few years ago, while he was playing Ivo, he was telling his camp how terrible Ivo was and how "this isn't tennis". Ivo confronted him on this after the match, since he understands French.
There was another match this year in Indian Wells where he does the same thing, and is just an awful cry-baby.

The Crip dance is now regularly featured in pop culture and dance. Do you think every dancer pays homage to the crips and promotes gang violence?

She wasn't born in LA. She was born in Michigan but moved to Compton. Then left Compton when she was 9.

It's the Crip dance and she knows it. Also she has lots of friends/family in Compton and regularly goes back. How do I know? I have friends in Inglewood/SC area that know her and I spent time in that area myself.

Stop acting dumb. What she did was classless and she should have known better.

Of course Serena is the worst thing to ever happen to tennis on this forum when we have the likes of Hewitt and McEnroe running around given a free pass for their transgressions

Hingis being booed by the french crowd against Steffi, the crowd that was racially biased against Williams in IW are examples of crowds targeting an individual which are extremely harrowing for a player. Agassi- Sampras was one-one, it was only a charity match. I am not justifying but there have been worse scenarios.
Hingis deserved the booing she got for her juvenile pathetic temper tantrum in that FO final. I had never rooted for Graf before Hingis had her melt down. Steffi handled it with perfect class at the trophy ceremony.

Seles stabbing was something beyond ugly.

Talking about Serena threats, but anyone remembers Johny Mac threats to lineswoman ?

There was a afternoon match at the USO one year in which, McEnroe started complaining about Everything from the moment the match started, or so it seemed. It got so bad that I turned off the match after about 15 minutes.

To be fair to the teenage Hignis, the line call was wrong, the mark checking utterly embarrasing, and Graf was unsportsmanlike.

The Wimbledon crowd is the worst crowd in tennis, yes even worse than the French crowd. How fooking rude are they?

She should have been old enough not to act like a jerk, being a set and break ahead. Her melt down opened the door for Graf, who went through it and humiliated Hingis, who had to be dragged to the trophy ceremony by her mother-LOL! Though I was never a Graf fan, that was one of my happiest days watching tennis. Hingis was always an arrogant and nasty spoiled brat!

I like the us open, but the fans are trash. Aside from davis cup where its expected, they are the worst.

Hingis reminds me a lot of McEnroe and Agassi in their younger days. Both started out as precocious brats with tactless tongues and diva-like behaviour. Then as they got older they matured and became much more likeable.

Dunno. Please enlighten us.
“I know let’s boo a player because we don’t like him and cheer the other player because we like him!”

Also yelling during points rivals American crowds, and when Rogah is playing he is the instant favorite, even when MuryGOAT is opposing him. Trash crowd.

Name me a Slam where "Rogah" isn't the instant favourite?

What world-endangering problem exactly does a Crip dance involve?

We are all aware that lots of cultural styles come from 'dangerous subcultures' before being tamed and mainstreamed, aren't we?

Well she was arrogant no doubt but she was also very young and had the utmost confidence in winning the trophy. She couldn't let go of the line call. The crowd was already very partisan towards Steffi even before the line call. This only gave them the chance to completely becoming an opponent that Hingis had to overcome apart from Steffi. A mob behaviour can be extremely pressuring for a teen to handle.

Leave your basement sometime and you'll understand some of the problems with gang culture and why it shouldn't be glorified.

Wait you probably have too much research to do looking for ways to defend Maria

Elvis Presley started out as glorified gang culture. Bing Crosby's skatting came from glorified gang culture. Need I go on?

In short, most of popular culture borrowed heavily and borrows heavily from dangerous subcultures.

In any event, it's not really glorifying it. If anything, it puts an end to the gang culture, but not the gang. The gang moves on.

So you shouldn't let your antipathy to Serena get in the way of objective analysis.

It's not really the case that a racist crowd would necessarily boo black players wherever they play. They might be quite supportive of demur black players who appear to "know their place," but hostile towards black players who are aggressive or outspoken. Racism doesn't always require a universal hatred based on colour/race.
But that wasn't what @Mainad was saying in that comment. They were saying that they would boo specifically those players wherever they played, not any black player. They're remarking on the fact that the jeering of the Williams sisters would likely have been prevalent at more than just that event if it was racially motivated against them as opposed to the other circumstances surrounding that particular occasion, which at least seems a reasonable proposition. It doesn't seem clear cut to me at all.

Nalbandian kicked the advertising board and injured the line judge is arguably the worst.

To me that was just a dumb move on Nalbandians part. No malicious intent. He was kicking a board... not an officials leg. The boarding broke. A better carpenter and the incident never happens. Official looked like he flopped a bit too.

My opinion her uglier moment was the 2009 USO tantrum.
Yeah that was pretty ugly.

Agree with above, the Nalbandian incident was unintentional. He was defaulted and I believe he was leading that match if memory serves. Kicking that board was really dumb but he was certainly punished for it.

He had won the 1st set and the 2nd had been going with serve when he double faulted (I think) to concede a break to Cilic for the 1st time in the match. At that point he walked over to the side of the court and kicked the advertising hoarding around a linesman's legs in frustration. Unfortunately, the hoarding was more fragile than he had supposed and it broke and splintered cutting the linesman's shin and making it bleed. According to the rules, the umpire had no choice but to default him which he accepted without any fuss.

It was a sad end to his grasscourt career. He made 1 more ATP final the following year at the Brazil Open (which he lost to Nadal) and then retired.

Right. And then there’s the double standard. Someone in another thread said Serena should have been banned for what she said in the foot fault incident. Puhlease. If you don’t know anything about tennis and the crap different players have said on court over the years (and gotten away with) as well as the history Serena had at the USO and the unfounded accusations of match fixing you might be forgiven for thinking that. But once it’s in context you realize yeah it was bad. But not banned bad.

Agassi definitely had insecurities because of losing to Sampras so often. There was a palpable tension between them which was covered up only by Federer and Agassi's banter. That tension just rose to its peak when Pete mocked Agassi. You could see it in Andre's strained smile that it touched the nerve, and he snapped. Wanted badly to embarrass Sampras, but surely looking back on this he'd feel more embarrassed himself.
It's understandable though. Agassi would regularly outplay Pete in baseline rallies (actual tennis), yet lose the big finales just because of the ultra-fast 90 surfaces ans Pete's scud missile serves. I'd be bitter too, because of knowing that I'm better yet the other guy wins because of essentially one shot: the serve.
