Many of the women have marginal service motions as well. The worst to me is one of the Russians (I say one of because they are so many now, maybe Dementiava). Her toss is about 1 foot and a half to her right and she puts side spin on it.

Mauresmo, Gonzo, Puerta, similar motions all ugly, but effective.

Rios has a very simplified, bare bones, odd looking ("ugly") serve, but that doesn't mean it's less effective.
Federer's serve looks almost poetic.

I hate to say it!!!

John Mcenroe serve touch and placement was unbelievable but yikes. His stance, sideways, and delivery is very unorthodox. It worked for J-Mac, but I am sure tennis clinics are not teaching his serve.

Just for a joke, try serving like him. It is like you are cutting the ball, not striking the serve. Tough to do, Roddick mimics it the best.

I always like Mac's serve motion. Very straight forward and effective, especially in it's disguise. He did the lean over because he had some back problems and did that to stretch it prior to serving.
Jonas Bjorkman is hilarious when he goes into his serve demonstration. He does Mac (left handed), Becker, Edberg...

My pick Schalken- not sure where he is these days. He had some very good results at Wimbledon and made it to the q-finals of two slams in 03. Anyone have an update on him.

How about Jim Courier? His serve was very compact...he got a lot of power from a very deep knee bend...

His serve was effective though. It was heavy, and at times he could hit a lot of aces. He lost to Pete in the '96 French Open but actually out-aced Sampras in the 5 sets...24 to 22, I think.

woow, didn't realize nadal's return is that good:confused:

Although he has a good return, I think the reason he wins a lot of points on his opponents serve is because he can get to the ball even if he hits a bad return and his opponent tries to be offensive.

Schalken went through some injuries and some illnesses - was out of the game for a long time (on the order of a year). He's playing again now, but I don't think he's managed to get back in the top 100.

I agree with whoever said Schalken. Utterly dreadful. And I would add that most of the South Americans have some of the worst/ugliest serves I've ever seen.

If Nadal had the worst serve he wouldn't be ranked #2. Check out some of his stats:

http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/matchfacts/default.asp

For example he has the highest 1st serve % on the tour. His other stats ain't that bad either.

You forget that his serve is just to get the ball in the service box.
His retrieval skills take care of everything, and I mean everything else.
Which is why he will win most of his service points anyway.

Ljubicic's serve is soo ugly. Very affective, but ugly. I think uglier than Roddick's, and a little less effective.

gael monfils has one ugly serve, the worse part is that he copied it. At least roddick's original

It's funny, because just a few days ago I saw Mecir on the tele during the Davis Cup final telecast; I seem to remember that when he was an active player, he had one of the weakest serves on the men's tour. Such a pity too because the "Big Cat" was one of the best players ever to play the game.

Francoise Durr. She played in the late 60s through the mid 70s I think. Her first serve was clocked at an 39 - 45 miles per hour. Her serve was so weak that it was a weapon.

Ramesh Krishnan. Played in the late 70s - mid 80s. His serve was a little faster, maybe double the speed of Durr's, but had the same effect.

Ugliest serve ever - Karsten Braasch. He looked like a high jumper on acid going through those contortions to serve.

Nadal's serve is not that fast but it seems effective. Every match the commentators keep saying how Nadal's opponents seem to have problems attacking his serve. Possibly due to the spin. So if you add to that his very high 1st serve percentage then what you get is a very good overall serve. Even if it is not pretty looking or particularly fast.

I think Dementieva's serve isn't as bad as it looks. Her slice serve out wide is very hard to return. Her topspin slice isn't too bad either. Remember Davenport having problems returning Dementieva's serves at US open this year? It's true that she double fault so much but she can hit hard with aces as well as those killer slices. If Dementieva gets better with her serves I think she will winning more and perhaps a slam or two.

Zabaleta's and Mirnyi's serves are extremely awkward looking, but they're both effective at it.
I don't like Dent's motion, but damn he can hit hard. Last night against Nalbandian he served a kickserve which kicked so weird between David's arm and shoulder. He served a kicker to David's body and it was an ace (and around 140 mph, indeed)

what a motion he had!!! all that body motion and the serve was all spin. saw him play at the TO masters one year and he made his opponent cry with all the goofy spins he used. Also killed the Williams sisters too.

Am I the only person that likes Roddick's serve? Simple and effective.

To me the only person with an awkward lookin serve is that fellow that poses like 4-5 times before he hits a serve. He was a player from Belarus or something that played Gasquet at Nottingham in the finals.

I don't think Roddick's service motion is ugly. It's simple and gets right to the point. The traditional windup might be more "artistic" but only when done by one of the masters (Pete Sampras, Roger Federer). When the longer service motion is done poorly it looks really funny.

Zabaleta's serve is ugly but it is easy, effectice and simple. You get a lot more power out of it. That's how I serve! Puerta serves like that and more and more juniors are too.
