Ugly & Pretty Strokes... you decide

#1
There's pros who have beautiful strokes and some who just can hit any uglier. , please give me your views on this... this is only based on looks and smoothness, not considering effectiveness by any means.

I'll start:

Pretty Forehand: Moya, Federer, Stosur
Ugly Forehand: Sharapova, Ljubicic, Karlovic

Pretty Backhand: Gasquet, Nalbandian, Volandri, JustinHH
Ugly Backhand: Roddick, Calatrava, Verdasco

Pretty Serve: Roddick, Federer, Hingis, Safin, Henman
Ugly Serve: Dementieva, Gaudio, Dent (super effective though)

Pretty Volley: Henman, Coria, LLodra, Paez, Navratilova, Philopussis.
Ugly Volley: Roddick, Gonzalez, Sharapova, Clement

Pretty Overhead: Gonzalez, Moya, Federer.... (no one like Sampras today though)
Ugly Overhead: V. Williams... can't think of anyone else

Prettiest shirt: Hrbaty ... sorry I had to do that!

Robin Soderling's game overall is pretty ugly. I mean every shot. Johnny Mac's groundies are pretty damn ugly too... Edberg's forehand, pretty nasty... ugliest shot out there has to be Roddick's forehand volley... I mean how do you get that far and not know how to hit a proper forehand volley? Alot of guys these days can't volley. but at least they LOOK passable!

I don't know how anyone could call the amalgum of moves that Roddick has a pretty serve. It's true, different strokes.

Prettiest service motion ever has to go to Michael Stich.

Gasquet Forehand it is an ugly stroke. He keeps his non hitting hand very close to his body rather then exteding it, so it looks like a T-REX when he is striking the ball.

I believe Gael Monfils strokes are not pretty all around and I have to agree that John McEnroes Strokes are very odd looking, How he gets away with it specially facing the high balls of the moders game is beyond me..

I think roddicks serve is nice, all of federers shots are beautifully crafted and executed, haas and gasquet hav pretty backhands, roddick has a very ugly backhand, grosjean has a pretty forehand, kiefers strokes can be rather asthetically displeasing...

We'll he led the tour the last two years in holding serves (I think), but Roddick's serve is anything but pretty.

Here's some obvious choices, some not...

FH: Pistol Pete's XC pass on the run. Wooooo!
BH: My boy, Guga. Haas. The Russian who brought home the Davis Cup in 2004 (I'm drawing a blank).
Volleys: Lopez. Moya. Hingis (creative from everywhere on the court)

Forehand: Juan Carlos Ferrero, Roger Federer, Marat Safin
Backhand: Marat Safin, Guga, Ferrero, Federer
Serve: Safin, Federer, Ferrero, Hewitt
Volley: Henman, Federer

Hope you're not talking about Youzny. That cat's backhand is unorthodox... starts as a 2 hander then finishes as a 1 hander, very strange.

I thought of starting this thread because I was looking at Sharapova's strokes and they're pretty ugly.. specially that forehand... I mean compared to good looking ones like Hingis' or Stosur's they look aweful

Well, it's a widely known fact that Sharapova's forehand is technically flawed...and I'm assuming you're not a fan of the reverse forehand that she commonly employs.

I'm a fan of that shot as long as it is well executed, not the case with Sharapova, it seems to be a bit weak... I saw Seles deliver much better trying that one.
Aside being unpretty.. her forehand seems to work well for Maria, specially on the run.

Agreed. Stich has one of my favorite service motions. I also loved Edberg's but read that his back-bend (is a hyphen appropriate here?) gave him many injuries.

Johnny Mac's serve, methinks, is hideous.
To each his own. Johnny Mac's serve, methinks, is quite beautiful to watch :) .

Roddick has pretty overhead. He may not be good as Sampras but he can sure do the slam dunk overhead pretty well.
I think Roddick's overhead smash is pretty average ... good, but not to single it out by any means, not better than Gonzo's or Blake's

Gonzo's??? Did you see him miss 2-3 easy overhead last year at the Masters Cup against Gaudio?

Going back a little while, I think Stefan Edberg's topspin backhand is
the most stylish shot to ever grace a tennis court (check out Wimbledon
88 or 89 finals for several superb bhs from him)

Ugly Backhand: Roddick, Calatrava, Verdasco
QUOTE]

I think when Verdasco sets up well and leans into it, his backhand is one of the best I've ever seen in terms of effectiveness and watchability!

Iagree with that, I think Verdasco's Backhand is a grea stroke with a lot of power spceially for a two handed.

the player with the ugliest strokes is Florian Mayer in my opinion

roddick is another players with horrible strokes (mainly his serve but forehand and backhand too)

#32
Federer has the best one handed backhand and forehand in all the surfaces except on clay.

Nadal has the best forehand on clay.

Tommy Hass has the second best one handed backhand.

#33
I'm going to go against the grain here ... but Gasquet has an ugly forehand with some spectacular results.

But he also has a flowing backhand with equally spectacular results.

Nadal has the ugliest forehand with the follow-through over his head.
Good players who hit topspin lobs do the same. You must realize he is generating unbelievable spin and that is the best way to finnish the stroke. He is definitely the greatest topspinner of all time. Federer and Agassi struggles with his forehand. It is only a forehand not a serve. Imagine that.

I'd say Edberg's entire game was stylish except for his chicken wing forehand. How someone so smooth could have such a weird looking forehand I'll never understand.

Molik has a nice serve. Reminds me of Sampras.

I think there is no doubt that Federer has the prettiest overall game, and I'd go so far to say it's the prettiest ever. It was the reason I picked up the game. :)

It is a blessing in disguise. If he had a forehand, he would change his serve and make it flatter. He would probably look like Petr Korda. But his game was designed to win points from the net.

His forehand was designed to compliment with his volleys.

i remember one tennis mag where they disected roddicks forhand as if to suggest anyone wanted to copy it. sorry but i dont wanna hit with an extreme western grip, hitting the very back and bottom of the ball with as much power and topspin and reckless abandon as possible everytime without thought. i was just waiting for them to do the same with his backhand! the ugliest strokes to me. and his serve makes me ache with pain. i could never contort my body like that!!

the prettiest strokes. to me? blakes come to mind. i love his posture. the way hes almost upright while he hits. and follows through very well. makes me almost want to get a back brace for a few years!! the same goes for dementiava's groundstrokes too. they use so much leg in their shots which is beautiful!

sharapovas groundstrokes are pretty ugly. which i cant speak cuz my forehand looks a lot like hers. but i love her serve. i love how its the same everytime. nothing ever changes. let it be set up or follow through its always the same. yet she can put the ball anywhere. there is no tell in where she will go.

ive always LOVED with a huge passion nalbandians and capriatis backhands. i mean as far as two handers. i dont use a one handed so i rarely care. ive always tried to model my backhands after nalbandians and capriatis tho!

ugliest (yet most efficient) forehand and backhand tho... all praise HAS to go to monica seles.
