Toni Nadal Hopeful Inactivity Won’t Hinder Rafael Nadal’s French Open Bid

In a column for Spanish newspaper El Pais, uncle Toni also speaks out about one rule at this year’s US Open that he is finding hard to get used to.

The former coach of world No.2 Rafael Nadal has said there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to taking part in this year’s US Open following the high-profile withdrawal of the Spaniard.

Toni Nadal has jumped to the defence of his nephew and others who have pulled out of New York amid concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nadal is the only member of the top 10 on the ATP Tour set to miss the event due to these concerns. However, three top 10 players on the WTA Tour have already pulled out.

“The US Open dispute by Djokovic, Tsitsipas or Thiem seems to me as understandable as the resignation of Nadal, Federer or Wawrinka,” Toni wrote in his column for El Pais. “We must understand the apprehension about taking different flights and leaving home when things continue to be so uncertain.”

Whilst supporting Nadal’s decision not to play the event, uncle Toni has expressed concern that a lack of match play could have a negative effect on his French Open campaign. Nadal last played a tournament back in February at the Acapulco Open in Mexico, which he won. The only top clay-court event set to take place in the build up to Roland Garros will be in Italy after the Madrid Open got cancelled.

“I just hope that, in Rafa’s case, his results at Roland Garros are not compromised by an inactivity of so many months,” Toni commented.

Besides his nephew, uncle Toni admits there is one thing he can’t get used to at this year’s US Open which is the loss of a crowd. A decision that was taken due to the risk posed by the pandemic.

“I find it difficult to accept and imagine the presence of the public in the stands. There are many occasions in which I have heard my nephew, like other tennis players, personally address the spectators to thank their support and the important role they have played. In order to lift a trophy. I can assure you that these are not empty words or set phrases. The shouts of the public after a great exchange, the emotion they show in the face of a victory and the disappointment in a defeat: that, to a large extent, it is what gives meaning to this sport and feeds the adrenaline of the tennis player.”

I think Tio Toni hit the nail on the head as far as deciding to participate in the USO. If you're concerned about that which shall not be mentioned, then don't play.

And for the players that are planning on playing, follow the damn guidelines so the risk of transmission is reduced as much as possible.

I'm sure he's maybe a little bit worried about injuries or Nadal finding form in the limited number of matches he'll have. I'd say the worry level would be much higher though if it wasn't clay that Nadal was returning to.

The main thing here imo is his thoughts on no fans in NY. Fans make the sport what it is. Again, just one of the MANY factors in the devaluing of the NY sham.

I don't blame Nadal for not playing the US Open, but this is actually freaking hilarious that he cites covid as a reason to not play the US Open but still plays the FO as if France was never affected. You bet your a** that if France had more cases than the States he'd still play and he would probably give some stupid reasoning like "it's closer to where I live".

ATP players are constantly whining about the season being far too long.

The pandemic has finally given them months of time off to heal and recover and physically train.Do whatever they want.

Rafa has his own Academy where he can hit.

A huge second wave is hitting Paris, which could make Paris far more dangerous than NYC
and yet he speaks like there is no chance whatsoever of Rafa skipping Paris.

Hypocrisy is off the charts. But at least this puts to bed any talk of Rafa skipping the French.

Rafa hasn't played RG yet and may not do so. I realize this opinion will be eviscerated here, since 99.8% of people believe he will play the French Open. But I think there is a chance he will not. The cases in Paris are again rising.

Nadal will be in Paris. There's a world of difference between playing in Europe and intercontinental travel. And then there is the scheduling and surface adjustment to consider.

There are two separate issues here:
Whether Rafa plays and whether RG is held.

It would make sense to cancel RG if Rafa does not play but who knows how desperate and greedy the French officials are.

Nobody is going to cancel an event just because one player, even if Rafa, does not turn up. They'll just re-package RG as a 'new gen breakout' championship.
People tend to forget about Djoker. Could very easily win RG, especially if Rafa is not there or is struggling.

Uncle Toni doesn't always articulate Rafa's thinking so I wouldn't take this as being from the horse's mouth.

I think it should be considered mandatory to give a like every time someone posts this gif.

As usual Toni is completely honest and transparent with his comments. Very refreshing in an age of what is typically robospeak from athletes.

It is hilarious that you speak of Toni as though he is Rafael (but we know the real stuation, so it is not all that surprising).

I just meant people associated with sports, which applies to coaches, GM's, owners, players, etc. Your desperate desire to get one over on me has led you face first into a brick wall once again lol

I just said what everyone knows, as I already mentioned. You are merely the vehicle of said information, and brick walls can hardly be vehicles.

I agree, they are known for having arguments.
Plus they don't seem to have similar personalities.

I never care what uncle Toni says, and I am a big Rafa fan. I respect he was a very successful coach but he is not even in Rafa's 'camp' any longer and this is just a desperate story in general.

Nadal just gave Djokovic the biggest chance of his life. Nadal knows he is the G.O.A.T., he just wants to win by being close. 5 sets matches are remembered not straight sets won, so he wants to make it a close race and then win the count race.

J/k lol:-D(n)

Plus there is no such thing as GOAT, otherwise Federer would have been it already when he had a huge lead in the slam race....
Impossible to be GOAT.
